  • The natural frequencies and modes of free vibration of specially orthotropic elliptic and circular plates are analysed using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The assumed functions used are two-dimensional boundary characteristic orthogonal polynomials which are generated using the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure. The first five natural frequencies are reported here for various values of aspect ratio of the ellipse. Results are given for various boundary conditions at the edges i.e., the boundary may be any of clamped, simply-supported or fret. Numerical results are presented here for several orthotropic material properties. For rectilinear orthotropic circular plates, a few results are available in the existing literature, which are compared with the present results and are found to be in good agreement.

  • An analysis of the free vibration for the metal-piezoceramic composite thin plates is described. The purpose of this study is to develop a equivalent method for the free vibration analysis of metal-piezoceramic composite thin plates which are not symmetrically about the adhered layer and the piezoelectric effect. In order to confirm the validity of the vibration analysis, double Fourier sine series is used as a modal displacement function of a metal-piezoceramic composite thin plate and applied to the free vibration analysis of the plate under various boundary conditions.

  • The free vibration of solid circular plates has been studied using the differential transformation method(DTM). The effects such as mass at edge and elastic restraints have been considered. In order to avoid the singularity problem at the solid circular center two regularity conditions were applied with respect to the number of circumferential nodal line. The non-dimensional natural frequencies of the general circular plates were obtained for various boundary conditions. The results obtained by this method were compared with previous works. DTM showed fast convergency, accuracy, efficiency and validity in solving vibration problem of general circular plates.

  • The porosity of functionally graded materials (FGM) can affect the static and dynamic behavior of plates, which is important to take this aspect into account when analyzing such structures. The present work aims to study the effect of the distribution shape of porosity on the free vibration response of simply supported FG plate reposed on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation. A refined theory of shear deformation is expanded to study the influence of the distribution shape of porosity on the free vibration behavior of FG plates. The findings showed that the distribution shape of porosity significantly influences the free vibration behavior of thick rectangular FG plates for small values of Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation parameters.

  • This paper focuses on trigonometric porosity distribution to analyze its effect on the free vibration frequencies of porous orthotropic multi-layered composite plates. Three types of porosity distributions are considered. The governing equations of the free vibration response of porous orthotropic multi-layered composite plates are derived from the Hamilton's principle using higher-order shear deformation theory. The free vibration frequency relation of the problem is obtained by performing Galerkin's method. After the validation process of the relation under the available literature, a few parametric analyses are performed to observe the influence of shear deformation, porosity distribution, orthotropy, layer sequence, and different geometric properties on the frequencies.

  • Nonlinear vibration characteristics of composite laminated trapezoidal plates are studied. The geometric nonlinearity of the plate based on the von Karman's large deformation theory is considered, and the finite element method (FEM) is proposed for the present nonlinear modeling. Hamilton's principle is used to establish the equation of motion of every element, and through assembling entire elements of the trapezoidal plate, the equation of motion of the composite laminated trapezoidal plate is established. The nonlinear static property and nonlinear vibration frequency ratios of the composite laminated rectangular plate are analyzed to verify the validity and correctness of the present methodology by comparing with the results published in the open literatures. Moreover, the effects of the ply angle and the length-high ratio on the nonlinear vibration frequency ratios of the composite laminated trapezoidal plates are discussed, and the frequency-response curves are analyzed for the different ply angles and harmonic excitation forces.

  • Recently, as high-rise buildings increase steeply, sub-structures of them are often supported on in-homogeneous foundation. And there are many machines in sub-structures of buildings, and slabs of sub-structures are affected by vibration which they make. This paper deals with vibration of plates with concentrated masses on in-homogeneous foundation. Machines on plates are considered as concentrated masses. In-homogeneous foundation is considered as assigning $k_{w1}$ and $k_{w2}$ to Winkler foundation parameters of central region and side region of plate respectively, and foundation is idealized to use Pasternak foundation model which considered both of Winkler foundation parameter and shear foundation parameter. In this paper, applying Winkler foundation parameters which $k_{w1}$and $k_{w2}$ are 10, $10^2$, $10^3$ and shear foundation parameter which are 10, 20 respectively, first natural frequencies of thick plates with concentrated masses on in-homogeneous foundations are calculated.

  • This study investigates the use of a vibration correlation technique (VCT) to identify the buckling load of a rectangular thin plate. It is proposed that the buckling load can be determined experimentally using the natural frequencies of plates under tensile loading. A set of rectangular plates was tested for natural frequencies using an impact test method. Aluminum and stainless steel specimens with CCCC, CCCF and CFCF boundary conditions were included in the experiment. The measured buckling load was determined from the plot of the square of a measured natural frequency versus an in-plane load. The buckling loads from the measured vibration data match the numerical solutions very well. For specimens with well-defined boundary conditions, the average percentage difference between buckling loads from VCT and numerical solutions is -0.18% with a standard deviation of 5.05%. The proposed technique using vibration data in the tensile loading region has proven to be an accurate and reliable method which might be used to identify the buckling load of plates. Unlike other static methods, this correlation approach does not require drawing lines in the pre-buckling and post-buckling regions; thus, bias in data interpretation is avoided.

  • A modeling method for the vibration analysis of rotating composite cantilever plates is presented. Explicit mass and stiffness matrices are derived by considering the coupling effects between extensional motions and the bending motion, To confirm the accuracy of the method presented in this study, numerical results are obtained and compared to those of a commercial program. Numerical results show that the coupling effect among the three motions becomes important for the accurate estimation of natural frequencies as laminates are stacked up unsymmetrically. Also, natural frequencies loci veering, loci crossing, and mode shape variations are observed.

  • In this study, the authors investigate the free vibration behavior of three-phases functionally graded sandwich plates using a novel nth-order shear deformation theory. These plates are composed of a homogeneous core and two face-sheet layers made of different functionally graded materials. This is the novel type of the sandwich structures that can be applied in many fields of mechanical engineering and industrial. The proposed theory only requires four unknown displacement functions, and the transverse displacement does not need to be separated into bending and shear parts, simplifying the theory. One noteworthy feature of the proposed theory is its ability to capture the parabolic distribution of transverse shear strains and stresses throughout the plate's thickness while ensuring zero values on the two free surfaces. By eliminating the need for shear correction factors, the theory further enhances computational efficiency. Equations of motion are established using Hamilton's principle and solved via Navier's solution. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed theory are verified by comparing results with available solutions. The authors then use the proposed theory to investigate the free vibration characteristics of three-phases functionally graded sandwich plates, considering the effects of parameters such as aspect ratio, side-to-thickness ratio, skin-core-skin thicknesses, and power-law indexes. Through careful analysis of the free vibration behavior of three-phases functionally graded sandwich plates, the work highlighted the significant roles played by individual material ingredients in influencing their frequencies.
