  • This paper provides accurate flexural vibration solutions for thick (Mindlin) sectorial plates. A Ritz method is employed which incorporates a complete set of admissible algebraic-trigonometric polynomials in conjunction with an admissible set of Mindlin “corner functions". These corner functions model the singular vibratory moments and shear forces, which simultaneously exist at the vertex of corner angle exceeding 180$^{\circ}$. The first set guarantees convergence to the exact frequencies as sufficient terms are taken. The second set represents the corner singularities, and accelerates convergence substantially. Numerical results are obtained for completely free sectorial plates. Accurate frequencies are presented for a wide spectrum of vertex angles (90$^{\circ}$, 180$^{\circ}$, 270$^{\circ}$, 300$^{\circ}$, 330$^{\circ}$, 350$^{\circ}$, 35 5$^{\circ}$,and 359$^{\circ}$)and thickness ratios.tios.

  • In this paper, the propagation of elastic wave generated by loading impact to plates made of isotropic or anisotropic material was studied. And the influence of boundary conditions(free or clamped edge) upon the reflection of elastic wave of isotropic plate such as aluminum plate showed circular interferometric fringe pattern, whereas that of anisotropic plate such as epoxy composite laminates showed elliptical one. And the transverse displacement curves obtained from experiment and theory for both plates agreed well. Also, the waves reflected from the boundary edges showed much differences according to the boundary condition of edges.

  • In this paper. the power flow analysis(PFA) method is applied to the prediction of the vibrational energy density and intensity of coupled co-planar plates. To cover the energy transmission and reflection at the joint of the plates. the wave transmission approach is Introduced with the assumption that all the incident waves are normal to the joint. By changing the frequency ranges and internal loss factors. we have obtained the reliable PFA results. and compared them with the analytical exact solutions.

  • This paper is concerned with the determination of exact buckling loads and vibration frequencies of variable thickness isotropic plates using well known finite difference technique. The plates are subjected to uni, biaxial compression and shear loadings and various combinations of boundary conditions are considered. The buckling load is found out as the in plane load that makes the determinant of the stiffness matrix equal to zero and the natural frequencies are found out by carrying out eigenvalue analysis of stiffness and mass matrices. New and exact results are given for many cases and the results are in close agreement with the published results. In this paper, like finite element method, finite difference method is applied in a very simple manner and the application of boundary conditions is also automatic.

  • A unified third-order laminate plate theory that contains classical, first-order and third-order theories as special cases is presented. Analytical solutions using the Navier and L$\acute{e}$vy solution procedures are presented. The Navier solutions are limited to simply supported rectangular plates while the L$\acute{e}$vy solutions are restricted to rectangular plates with two parallel edges simply supported and other two edges having arbitrary combination of simply supported, clamped, and free boundary conditions. Numerical results of bending and vibration for a number of problems are discussed in the second part of the paper.

  • Composite materials have varios complicated characteristics to the ply materials, ply orientations, ply stacking sequences and boundary conditions. Therefore, it is difficult to analysis composite materials. For efficient use of composite materials in engineering applications the dynamic behavior, that is, natural frequencies, nodal patterns should be informed. This study presents the experimental and FEM results for the free vibration of symmetrically and antisymmetrically laminated composite and hybrid composite rectangular plates. In order to demonstrate the validity of the experiment, FEM analysis using ANSYS was performed and natural frequencies experimentally obtined is compared with that calculated by FEM analysis. The results obtained from both experiment and FEM analysis show a good agreement.

  • In the present study, a new simple first-order shear deformation theory is presented for laminated composite plates. Moreover, the number of unknowns of this theory is the least one comparing with the traditional first-order and the other higher-order shear deformation theories. Equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions of simply supported antisymmetric cross-ply and angle-ply laminates are obtained and the results are compared with the exact three-dimensional (3D) solutions and those predicted by existing theories. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the static bending and free vibration behaviors of laminated composite plates.

  • This paper provides the first known flexural vibration data for thick (Mindlin) rectangular plates having V-notches. The V-notch has bending moment and shear force singularities at its sharp corner due to the transverse vibratory bending motion. Based upon Mindlin plate theory, in which transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia effects are considered, the Ritz procedure is employed with a hybrid set of admissible functions assumed for the rotational and transverse vibratory displacements. This set includes: (1) a mathematically complete set of admissible algebraic-trigonometric polynomials which guarantee convergence to exact frequencies as sufficient terms are retained; and (2) an admissible set of Mindlin corner functions which account for the bending moment and shear force singularities at the sharp corner of the V-notch. Extensive convergence studies demonstrate the necessity of adding the Mindlin corner functions to achieve accurate frequencies for rectangular plates having sharp V-notches.

  • The dynamic response of symmetric cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminated plates under impact loads is investigated using a higher order shear deformation theory. A modified Hertz law is used to predict the impact loads and a four node finite element is used to model the plate. By using a higher order shear deformation theory, the out-of-plane shear stresses, which can be a crucial factor in the failure of composite plates, are determined with significant accuracy. The results compared with previous investigations showed good agreement. The effect of ply sequence and ply angle on the contact force is also studied.

  • Optimal design of functionally graded plates is investigated considering stress and critical temperature. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and varied continuously in the thickness direction. The effective material properties are obtained by applying linear rule of mixtures. The 3-D finite element model is adopted using an 18-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties and temperature field in the thickness direction. For stress analysis, the tensile stress ratio and compressive stress ratio of the structure under mechanical load are investigated. In the thermo-mechanical buckling analysis, temperature at each node is obtained by solving the steady-state heat transfer problem and Newton-Raphson method is used for material nonlinear analysis. Finally, the optimal design of FGM plates is studied for stress reduction and improving thermo-mechanical buckling behavior, simultaneously.
