  • This paper summarizes the recent fabrication and characterizations of flexible high-speed radio frequency (RF) transistors, PIN-diode single-pole single-throw switches, as well as flexible inductors and capacitors, based on single-crystalline Si nanomembranes transferred on polyethylene terephthalate substrates. Flexible thin-film transistors (TFTs) on plastic substrates have reached RF operation speed with a record cut-off/maximum oscillation frequency ($f_T/f_{max}$) values of 3.8/12 GHz. PIN diode switches exhibit excellent ON/OFF behaviors at high RF frequencies. Flexible inductors and capacitors compatible with high-speed TFT fabrication show resonance frequencies ($f_{res}$) up to 9.1 and 13.5 GHz, respectively. Robust mechanical characteristics were also demonstrated with these high-frequency passives components.

  • Nanoimprinting lithography (NIL) is known as a suitable technique for fabricating nano and micro structures of high definition. Hot embossing is one of NIL techniques and can imprint on thin films and bulk polymers. Key issues of hot embossing are time and expense needed to produce a stamp withstanding a high temperature and pressure. Fabrication of a metal stamp such as an electroplated nickel is cost intensive and time consuming. A ceramic stamp made by silicon is easy to break when the pressure is applied. In this paper, a plastic stamp using a high temperature epoxy was fabricated and tested. The plastic stamp was relatively inexpensive, rapid to produce and durable enough to withstanding multiple hot embossing cycles. The merits of low viscosity epoxy solutions were a fast degassing and a rapid filling the microstructures. The hot embossing process with plastic stamp was performed on PMMA substrates. The hot embossing was conducted at 12.6 bar, $120^{\circ}C$ and 10 minutes. An imprinted PMMA wafer was almost same value of the plastic stamp after 10 times embossing. Entire fabrication process from silicon master to plastic stamp was completed within 12 hours.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different substrates in rearing tank on growth and body composition of juvenile sea cucumber Apostichophus japonicus. Sea cucumber (average weight 3.6) were randomly distributed at a density of 10 juvenile per tank into nine tanks providing three different substrates including free-substrates, sand and wave-shaped plastic sheet as (shelter). Juveniles were fed with a commercial feed once in every 2 days for 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, survival of sea cucumber was not affected by the presence of substrates (P>0.05). Weight gain and specific growth rate of sea cucumber reared in the tanks with sand were significantly higher than those of sea cucumber reared in the tanks with shelter and without substrate (P<0.05). Crude protein and crude lipid of whole body in sea cucumber reared in free-substrate tanks were significantly higher than those of juvenile reared in the tanks with other substrates (P<0.05). Higher ash content was obtained in sea cucumber reared in the tanks with sand compared to that of juvenile reared in the tanks with other substrates (P<0.05). The results of this study suggest that growth and proximate composition of whole body of sea cucumber was significantly affected by substrates. Among materials tested, sand may be a proper substrate for sea cucumber culture.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the suitability of various agricultural by-products as basal substrates for the mycelial growth and fruiting body formation of Hericium erinaceum. For this aim, oak sawdust, cotton waste, sugarcane bagasse, Job's tears, rice hull, Chinese cabbage, and coconut waste were used as sole or mixed substrate(s). Corn waste and rice bran were used as nutrient supplements. The growth and density of mycelium, yield of fruiting body, and biological efficiency were compared among tested substrates colonized by Hericium erinaceum. The best measurement of mycelial growth and density, yield of fruiting body, and biological efficiency in a laboratory test was found in a spawn substrate composed with oak sawdust 80% and rice bran 20%. The suitability of this spawn substrate composition for Hericium fruiting body production was testified through practical tests in plastic bottles (850 ml) in a mushroom farm which had bottle cultivation facility. However, test in a mushroom farm which had plastic bag cultivation facility, best production of Hericium fruiting body (520 g per one bag) was observed in a spawn substrate composed of cotton waste 40%, saw dust 40%, corn waste 10%, and rice bran 10%.

  • In this paper, we describe the fabrication of 3.5-inch QCIF active matrix organic light emitting display (AMOLED) panels driven by thin film transistors, which are produced by an ultra-low-temperature polycrystalline silicon process on plastic substrates. The over all processing scheme and technical details are discussed from the viewpoint of mechanical stability and display performance. New ideas, such as a new triple-layered metal gate structure to lower leakage current and organic layers for electrical passivation and stress reduction are highlighted. The operation of a 3.5-inch QCIF AMOLED is also demonstrated.

  • In this paper, three types of organic electroluminescent devices(OELD) were fabricated on mechanically flexible plastic substrate by using vacuum deposition method. The devices consist of a hole transporting material such as TPD, a light-emitting material such as Alq$\sub$3/ and an electron transporting material, blocking material such as PBD. Electrical and optical properties of these OELDs were measured. This paper shows that organic small molecules based on OELD can be successfully deposited on a flexible plastic substrate. This points open the potential for low cost mass production of flexib]e displays, including roll to roll processing.

  • Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are regarded as potential inexpensive alternatives to conventional solid-state devices. The flexible version, employing conductive-plastic-film substrates, is appealing for commercialization of DSSCs because it not only reduces the weight and cost of the device but also extends their applications. However, the need for high temperature does not permit the use of plastic-film substrate. So, development of low-temperature methods is therefore realization of flexible DSSCs. In this work, the electrophoretic deposition combined with hydrothermal treatment was employed to prepare nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ thin film at low temperature. We confirmed the prepared $TiO_2$ thin films with different voltages and deposition times in the electrophoretic deposition process. Properties of the $TiO_2$ films were investigated by various analysis method such as X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and UV-visible spectrophotometer.

  • The use of plastic substrates enables new applications, such as flexible display devices, and other flexible electronic devices, using low cost, roll-to-roll (R2R) fabrication technologies. One of the limitations of polymeric substrate in these applications is that oxygen and moisture rapidly diffuse through the material and subsequently degrade the electro-optical devices. GE Global Research (GEGR) has developed a plastic substrate technology comprised of a superior high-heat polycarbonate ($LEXAN^{(R)}$) substrate film and a unique transparent coating package that provides the ultrahigh barrier (UHB) to moisture and oxygen, chemical resistance to solvents used in device fabrications, and a high performance transparent conductor. This article describes the coating solutions for polycarbonate ($LEXAN^{(R)}$) films and its compatibility with OLED device fabrication processes.

  • This letter reports the fabrication of polycrystalline silicon thin-film transistors (poly-Si TFT) on flexible plastic substrates using amorphous silicon (a-Si) precursor films by sputter deposition. The a-Si films were deposited with mixture gas of argon and helium to minimize the argon incorporation into the film. The precursor films were then laser crystallized using XeCl excimer laser irradiation and a four-mask-processed poly-Si TFTs were fabricated with fully self-aligned top gate structure.
