  • In order to verify the analytical methods predicting failure behavior of cracked piping, full-scale pipe tests are crucial in nuclear power plant piping. For this reason, series of international test programs have been conducted. However, full-scale pipe tests require expensive testing equipment and long period of testing time. The objective of this paper is to develop a test system which can economically simulate the full-scale pipe test regarding the integrity evaluation. This system provides the failure behavior of cracked pipe by testing a wide-plate specimen. The system provides the failure behavior of cracked pipe by testing a wide-plate specimen. The system was developed for the integrity evaluation of nuclear piping based on the methodology of hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulation. Using this simulator, the piping integrity can be evaluated based on the elastic-plastic behavior of full-scale pipe, and the high cost full-scale pipe test may be replaced with this economical system.

  • In this paper, the effect of material elasticity was evaluated through a simple model as proposed by Wang and Yu (1991), for yield mechanisms of a cantilever beam under tip pulse loading. The beam was assumed rigid-perfectly plastic but instead of the usual fully clamped constraints at its root, an elastic-perfectly plastic rotational spring was introduced there so the system had a certain capacity to absorb elastic energy. Compared with a rigid-perfectly plastic beam without a spring root, the present beam-spring model showed differences in the initial plastic hinge position and the minimum magnitude of the dynamic force needed to produce a plastic failure. It was also shown that various failure responses may happen while the hinge travels along the beam segment towards the root, rather than a unique response mode as in a rigid perfectly plastic analysis.

  • The main causes of subsidence and sinkholes in the lower part of urban roads are sewage line foundation and inadequate compaction of backfill material. This leads to many problems, such as the breakage of joints in sewer pipes, poor connection, pipe breakage, and cracks. To solve this problem, the support factor related to the sewer foundation and the safety factor according to the excavation depth were evaluated. For the foundation of rigidity tolerance, crushed stone foundation, and abandoned concrete foundation, a recently newly developed site assembly-type lightweight plastic foundation were used. Backfill materials were applied on site (sandy soil and clayey soil) and fluid backfill was recycled onsite. To evaluate the depth of excavation and the safety factor of each sewer pipe foundation, the design load considering the load factor and the support factor was evaluated. The support coefficients were 0.377 for a crushed stone foundation, 0.243 and 0.220 for an abandoned concrete foundation ($180^{\circ}$ and $120^{\circ}$), and 0.231 for a lightweight plastic foundation and fluid backfill. Overall, the safety factor was low when using the crushed stone foundation, and the safety rate was the highest when the foreclosed concrete foundation ($180^{\circ}$) was used. In addition, when the combination of lightweight plastic and fluid backfill materials was used, the safety factor was higher than that of abandoned concrete foundation ($120^{\circ}$), which means that the newly developed lightweight plastic foundation can be used as another alternative base of a steel pipe.

  • This paper is experimental results of investigating the efficiency of horizontal vacuum drainage system. Effects of size and shape of drain on horizontal vacuum drainage were studied. Model tests in the laboratory with soft marine clay were carried out with drain pipe of having three different diameters and PBD (Plastic Board Drain) of strip shape so that consolidation settlement of soft clay due to applied vacuum pressure, amount of discharge, ground settlement and distributions of pore pressure and undrained shear strength were measured during testing. From results of model test, amount of discharge due to vacuum pressure was increased with the diameter of pipe drain whereas the drain efficiency of pipe in per unit area of drain surface was decreased with diameter of pipe. The rate of discharge per unit time was reduced very fast with diameter of pipe. Settlement of ground surface with time was increased with diameter of pipe as a result of increase of discharge to drain pipe.

  • The flow in the beginning lateral sewer can be characterized as intermittent and unsteady, and a moment maximum flow energy is required to transport fecal solids in the sewer. It is thus difficult to design to satisfy a minimum velocity criteria (0.6m/s), because of the substantially lower discharge in the beginning lateral sewer. This study is the result of a field survey, and aims to determine a design criteria for the minimum slope to prevent sediment in a lateral sewer. The survey performed on the two flat small catchments in Goyang-si consisting of D400mm hume-pipe, aimed to understand the manner in which the scope of a sewer slope has an effect on sediment in the beginning lateral sewer. The survey showed that the sewer slope below 3‰ had sedimentation of 88.7%, while the sewer slope of 3~6‰ had sedimentation of 47.8%. In addition, the minimum design slope was estimated to refer to the result of hydraulic experiments from Public Works Research Institute in Japan. Analysis showed that the D400mm hume pipe should be installed with a slope of 6.5‰ to prevent sediment in the beginning lateral sewer. For future installations, the study results showed that a D300mm plastic pipe requires a minimum slope of 3.5‰, and a D250mm plastic pipe requires a minimum slope of 3.3‰ in the beginning lateral sewer.

  • The characteristics and production mechanism of residual stress generated by multi-pass welding of the steel pipe were elucidated from the results of three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic FEM analysis. When the steel pipe was jointed by multi-pass welding, the stress components of circumferential direction and radial direction near welded joints on the inner surface and the outer surface of the pope were tensile. The stress component of axial direction on the inner surface was tensile and on the outer surface was compressive. On the other hands, the production mechanism of residual stress generated by multi-pass welding of the steel pipe was investigated. Residual stress generated by welding of the steel pipe was investigated not only by the thermal history but also by geometrical shape. Then, the generality of the production mechanism of residual stress generated by multi-pass welding was confirmed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the fracture toughness of the welded pipe from the viewpoint of FATT for the S38 and S42 steels used widely as the pipe material. Post weld heat treatment(PW HT) was carried out like following conditions: temperature of 67$0^{\circ}C$, I hour of holding time and cooling in furnace. Fracture toughness was obtained by measuring the crack opening displacement(COD) of the notched specimens over the range of temperature from -14$0^{\circ}C$ to -$25^{\circ}C$. Hardness values at fusion line near around were the highest and the microstructures at welded zone were coarsened. Regardless of the pipe materials, COD and temperature curves of the as-welds were moved toward higher temperature compared with those of the parents. However, COD and temperature curves of the PWHT specimens were positioned at lower temperature compared with those of the as-welds. The more heat input causes to decrease the COD values at the constant temperature. It was verified through the recrystallization treatment that PWHT was attributed to move toward lower temperature region considerably due to the improved plastic deformation at the same applied COD value of 0.3mm and softening effect. In case of the weldment of S38 steel, cleavage fracture was observed at -105$^{\circ}C$ unlike the structural steels, in which brittle fracture mode was generally shown at - 196$^{\circ}C$.

  • Many research works have been performed on the J-T approach for elastic-plastic crack-tip stress fields in a variety of plane strain specimens. To generalize the validity of J-T method, further investigations are however needed fur more practical 3D structures than the idealized plane strain specimens. The present study deals mainly with 3D finite element (FE) modeling of welded plate and straight pipe, and accompanying elastic, elastic-plastic FE analyses. Manual 3D modeling is almost prohibitive, since the models contain semi-elliptical interfacial cracks which require singular elements. To overcome this kind of barrier, we develop a program generating the meshes fur semi-elliptical interfacial cracks. We then compare the detailed 3D FE stress fields to those predicted with J-T two parameters. The validity of J-T approach is thereby extended to 3D yield-strength-mismatched weld joints, and useful information is inferred fur the design or assessment of pipe welds.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the problems in Umbrella Arch Method, such as the oxidation, the difficulties in installation and cutting of the steel pipe. The applicability of the high strength FRP (Fiber-Reinforced-Plastic) materials composed of glass fiber as a substitute of steel pipe was investigated in this study. The results of this study show that FRP material is better than steel pipe in work performance and the durability of material except for its price. From the numerical analysis with various types of FRP, it was evaluated that the equiangular curve type is more efficient than the flat type developed abroad, and the supporting effect of FRP-grout mixture is similar to that of steel-grout mixture in results of bending strength test.
