  • The thermal and photometric properties of mulching materials modify the radiation and energy balance on the mulched soil surface and thereby change the soil temperature. The soil surface energy balances and soil temperatures under the mulching treatments of non-mulched control, recycled paper (RPM), and black polyethylene film (BPFM) were compared before and after the establishment of potato canopy. On August 30 in 1998 when potato was not emerged yet and solar radiation was 17.9 MJ $m^{-2}$${day}^{-1}$ , the net radiation of the soil surface was estimated as 10.(1, 2. 4, and 1.3 MJ $m^{-2}$${day}^{-1}$ under the control, BPFM, and RPM, respectively. The sensible and latent heat loss from the soil surface was 9.65 MJ $m^{-2}$${day}^{-1}$ in the control, most of the net radiation being lost through evaporation and convection, whereas it amounted only to 1.39 MJ $m^{-2}$${day}^{-1}$ in BPFM and 1.36 MJ $m^{-2}$${day}^{-1}$ in RPM. Therefore, the soil heat fluxes were 0.36 1.02, and 0.06 MJ m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ under the control, BPFM and RPM, respectively. On September 27 when potato canopy was fully developed, the soil surface net radiation in the control was sharply decreased as compared to that of Aug. 30, whereas the net radiation of the mulched soil surfaces showed little changes. The soil heat flux was -0.01, 0.95, and 0.12 MJ $m^{-2}$${day}^{-1}$ at the soil surface under the control, BPFM and RPM, respectively. As the mulching treatments brought about such alteration of energy partitioning into the soil, the highest soil temperature was recorded in BPFM and the lowest in RMP without regard to potato canopy development. However, the soil temperature differences among the treatments become smaller when potato canopy were fully developed.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to determine effects of ridging systems and plastic film mulch types on growth, yield, and profitability of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in spring cropping using paddy field and to suggest profitable ridging system and plastic mulch type.METHODS AND RESULTS: Two potato cultivars ('Goun', and 'Atlantic') were grown at paddy field located in Gangneung in spring. For treatments, ridging systems were one-row ridge (OR) and two-row ridge (TR). Mulch types were no-mulch (NM), black plastic film mulch (BPM), and transparent plastic film mulch (TPM). Emergence of sprout was affected by the mulch types and the fastest level was shown at TPM treatment. Accumulative soil temperature during sprouting was 16.2℃ higher at TR than at OR and also higher at TPM than at BPM or NM. Stem length was not affected by ridging systems or mulch types. Leaf area index (LAI) was influenced by mulch types, while not by ridging systems. The highest LAI was shown at TR with TPM and OR of BPM. There was no significant difference in specific gravity or dry matter rate by ridging systems and mulch types. Tuber yield was significantly influenced by ridging systems and mulch types. Mean tuber weight was heavier at OR treatment than at TR and also the heaviest at TPM among mulch types. The highest marketable yield was found at OR with BPM. Based on marketable tuber yield and market price, the highest income ratio in two cultivars was found at OR with BPM and it was 20~82% higher than the ratio at TR with TPM.CONCLUSION: In spring potato cropping using paddy field, OR with BPM is better for high yield and is more profitable for farmer's income than the conventional cultivation method, TR with TPM.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of mechanization on lavor-saving in sweetpotato cultivation. The field experiment was conducted from 2005 to 2006 in Mokpo Experiment Station of the National Institute of Crop Science. In order to determine the efficiency of mechanical harvesting, different harvesting methods were compared. Mechanical harvesting method was done as follows: cutting of vines by machine, removal of plastic film mulching, and harvesting by two-row and one-row harvesting system. The result showed harvesting labor was decreased by 66.6% in two-row harvesting. The ratio of damaged sweetpotato by mechanical harvesting decreased by 49.4% in two-row and 38.4% in one-row harvesting compared to conventional method. The total labor cost was saved by 48.2% - 70.4% using mechanical method. In addition, the total income also increased by ca. 62.9% - 81.2%. Thus, it was concluded that mechanical harvesting is more efficient and economical method than conventional one.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate methods to reduce seeding expenses, thereby increasing farm income. This study investigated the effects of rain shelter controlled cultivation and adapted seeding times on the stable seed production of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. Methods and Results: Seed germination was conducted under 10 condition compose to control, water washing, cold storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 15 days, seed sterilization with a benomyl pesticides, hormone treated seed by submerging in 100 ppm $GA_3$ with the cold storage at $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, darkness in a covered petridish and illuminated with a 1,500 Lux lamp. There were three cultivation type, open cultivation with non-woven fabric mulching, cultivation with a vinyl covering and rain sheltered in a plastic greenhouse. Sowing dates were April 27, May 18, June 7 and June 28, 2013. Plants were spaced 10 cm apart in rows 30 cm apart. Mixed oil cake fertilizer, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$ (12-10-10) was applied at $600kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$. Conclusions: Optimum germination occured in darkness at $25^{\circ}C$ and cold storage after submerging in $GA_3$. The highest seed yields ($4.5kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) occurred in the plastic greenhouse for the April 25 sowing. The highest root yield (17%) was found on April 1, under greenhouse conditions.

  • This experiment was performed to see the possibility if soil-borne disease in green house can be controlled by soil solarization in Korea. Thermal death profiles of propagules of some soil-borne fungi, Fusarium oxysporum f. lycopersici, Fusarium oxysporum f. niveum, Rhizoctonia salani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Sclerotium rolfsii and Pythium debaryanum, were obtained under the conditions in water-suspension and in soil. Except Pythium debaryanum, all the fungal units in water-suspension that were colonized on barley grains lost a viability within 7 days in water bath at $45^{\circ}C$. When the soil in test tubes in which barley grains infected with the fungi were also buried all the fungi tested including Pythium debaryanum were completely killed within 7 days in water bath at $45^{\circ}C$. From July to August in Korea, soil temperature at depth of 5cm and 15cm within tunnel in plastic house reached $38^{\circ}C\;to\;57^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C\;to\;47^{\circ}\C$, in 1982 and 1983 respectively. Even at 15cm depth, soil temperature were kept over $43^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours a day. Adiabatic material set under ground or under mulching with the transparent polyethylene-film on the soil surface had a boostering effect for higher soil-temperature and longer duration. Fungi buried in adiabatic block of the soil in plastic house were completely killed at 15cm depth 14 days after, and at 20cm depth 21 days after soil solarization. The exposure of the pathogens to fluctuating temperature was much more effective than to constant. From the above results, soil-borne diseases may be effectively controlled by soil solarization in the closed plastic house in hot summer season in Korea.

  • Weed control using cover crops has advantages of agricultural and environmental aspects which prevent soil erosion, nitrogen supply, improving soil physical properties, reduction of nitrate leaching, organic supply and control of weed occurrence. In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of cover crops on the weed occurrence, growth and yield of soybean in cover crop-soybean cropping system. The treatments were consisted of 4 different mulching system such as crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) residue, hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) residue, rye (Secale cereale) residue and Polyethylene plastic(P.E.) mulch with no mulch treatment (control). Three cover crops were grown throughout the winter and were cut in next spring. And then 13 days old soybean seedlings were transplanted in each treatment field on $4^{th}$ June. Crimson clover, hairy vetch and rye mulch treatments reduced weeds density compared to control (73.0%, 98.0% and 85.3% respectively), on $26^{th}$ May. However, weed inhibition rate of crimson clover mulch treatment was sharply decreased to 4.17% on $6^{th}$ August, while hairy vetch and rye mulch treatments were continued high weed inhibition rate with 87.6% and 72.0% respectively. There was no inhibition effect of perennial, winter annual and broadleaf weeds inhibition in crimson clover mulch treatment. Height of soybean in crimson clover, hairy vetch and P.E. mulch treatment was 6.9%, 20.2% and 22.0% higher than that of control. But height of soybean in rye mulch treatment was lower than control on $13^{th}$ July. At harvesting, yields of soybean were in order of hairy vetch mulch treatment${\fallingdotseq}$ P.E. mulch treatment > crimson clover mulch treatment ${\fallingdotseq}$ rye mulch treatment > control.
