Numerical Analysis of Cooling Channels for Injection Molding Cycle Time Improvement of Plastic Horn Cover for an Automobile (차량용 플라스틱 혼 커버의 사출성형 싸이클 타임 개선을 위한 냉각 채널의 수치해석 연구)

  • When producing a plastic horn cover for an automobile, since the interval between the ribs on the inner surface is narrow, conventional cooling channels cannot be applied and cooling of the mold is difficult. For this reason, the molding operation cannot be completed within a set cycle time. In this study, a conformal cooling channel was applied on the mold to solve the cooling problem. Injection molding simulation was carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the conformal cooling channel. In the analysis results, the mold temperature at the rib section decreased by 33%, and the mold temperature also decreased by 31%. This reduction in temperature allowed for molding within a set cycle time and demonstrated the effectiveness of the conformal cooling channel.

Improvement of Birefringence Characteristics of Injection-Molded Plastic Parts by Rapid Heating (급속 가열에 의한 사출성형품의 복굴절특성 개선)

  • The present work focuses on the prediction of birefringence in injection-molded plastic part and its improvement by rapid mold heating. To calculate birefringence, flow-induced residual stress is computed through a fully three-dimensional injection molding analysis. Then the stress-optical law is applied from which the order of birefringence can be evaluated and visualized. The birefringence patterns are predicted for a rectangular plate with a variation of mold temperatures, which shows that the amount of molecular orientation and birefringence level decreases with an increase of mold temperature. The effect of mold temperature on the order of birefringence is also studied for a thin-walled rectangular strip, and compared with experimental measurements. Both predicted and experimental patterns of birefringence are in agreements on the observation that the birefringence level diminishes significantly when the mold temperature is raised to above the glass transition temperature.

  • Micromolding methods are most suitable for mass production of plastic microlens and lens array with low cost. Among the procedures related with micromolding of microlens array, fabrication of mold insect which contains micro cavity of lens shape is the most important stage. In this study, nickel mold inserts for 45 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 95 $\mu\textrm{m}$ diameters lens way were fabricated using electroforming process. The mother for metal mold inset was made using reflow method. A micro compression molding with polymer powders was used to test the qualities of the metal mold insets. Micro lens profile and surface roughness was measured by interferometric technique and AFM, respectively. The final molded lens replicated the mother well, and had good surface quality.

  • The analysis of injection molding process by CAE is widely used in development of plastic products. That comes from the fact that CAE analysis can reduce trial and error based on optimized design. On this study, by use of MOLDFLOW, the causes of product defects were found and solved by trade-off study. CAE analysis includes Flow-Cool-Warpage Analyses and finally a new mold-die design with better product quality was suggested. On injection molding of round-shaped plastic fan, new mold-die system with 4-tunnel gates located on the edge of a fan disc shows better quality rather than pin-point gate located on the center of a disc. That was effective in terms of flow mark removal and flatness improvement of the product.

  • In design of the plastic injection mold, most of drawings are composed of basic entities. It is very easy to produce many kinds of drawings by Group Technology. Group Technology is a technique In which part similarities are used to classify parts into part families according to either geometric shape and size or processing requirements. Almost data for the mold are decided during the assembly design. A system which shows a good interfaces between the design stage and producing part exploding Is developed using AutoCAD system and data conversion technique.

  • In design stage of a plastic injection mold, basic entities of various kinds are introduced under the concept of Group Technology to produce a full drawings of the mold more effectively Most of the entity data should be extracted from the assembly drawing by pattern matching technique. An automated design system is developed using the extracted data of entities and thus shows a good interfaces between the design stage and producing part explosion without any manual conversion procedure under the AutoCAD environment.

  • It is true that the plastic shrinkage is inevitable. Shrinkage rate in effect at the time of mold design will soon determine the size of the global product. Process for the shrinkage of the plastic that provides how made, yet it has identified a process for making the question whether the shrinkage that can be trusted, and by the experimental results were as follows: as shrinkage, see ISO but, according to circumstances the process can go to the agreement between the parties. shrinkage ratio of the pressure sensor installed in the specimen mold is essential, amount of pressure sensor is that it is appropriate approximately 2-3. proper holding pressure is a significant effect on shrinkage Mitch, so that the effect of selecting the contraction ratio data according to the appropriate holding pressure during mold making. shrinkage CAE analysis results are difficult to utilize in the mold-making chamber. Based on these results, it concluded by looking forward to the improved products produced shrinkage.
