  • Wood plastic composites (WPCs) are attracting a lot of interest recently. In this study, wood flour/polyethylene (PE) composites panels comprised of a coupling agent and nanoclay were prepared by melt-blending followed by compression molding. Five maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAPE) coupling agents were tested, and the best choice and its optimum content were determined. The mechanical properties of the WPCs were measured by UTM, and the thermal properties were measured by TGA, DMA, DSC, and TMA. Adding just a small amount (1 phr) of organoclay made the tensile and flexural strength and the crystallinity of the WPC somewhat increase and the storage modulus and dimensional stability of the WPC largely increase. SEM images showed that the coupling agent drastically improved wood flour/PE interfacial bonding. Selecting the best coupling agent optimized content and adding a small amount of organoclay resulted in a high performance wood flour/PE composite.

  • Choi et al./sup 1)/ presented the total Lagrangian formulation based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors and taking into account the second order rotation terms in the incremental displacement field. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome the shear locking phenomena and to eliminate the spurious zero energy mode. In this paper, for the ultimate strength analysis of stiffened shell structures considering effects of residual stresses, the return mapping algorithm based on the consistent elasto-plastic tangent modulus is applied to anisotropic shell structures. In addition, the load/displacement incremental scheme is adopted for non-linear F.E. analysis. Based on such methodology, the computer program is developed and numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with the results in literatures.

  • The recycled polyethylene was used for making wood-plastic composite panels. In this experiment, the sizes of wood particles used were 1/32", 1/4" and 1/2" in mesh number, and the contents of the recycled polyethylene were 10%, 30% and 50%. The physical and mechanical properties of the composite panels were investigated. At a given content of recycled polyethylene, the density of composite panel decreases with the increase of wood particle size. The thickness swelling and water adsorption decrease with the increase of recycled polyethylene, where significantly lower at 10%, compared with at 30%. In the water soaking experiment for 14 days, the dimensional stability of composite panel appeared good in the composite panel with recycled polyethylene content of 30% or higher. As the content of recycled polyethylene increases, the internal bonding strength and the modulus of rupture in bending strength increases. In SEM, the molten recycled polyethylene showed interlocking action through its penetration into tracheid openings including pits as well as binder between wood particles as the matrix material, thus increasing bonding strength and improving the physical and mechanical properties of composite panel.

  • This study investigates the field application, Songdo the # 1st WORLD, on zero-crack construction of the fundamental mass concrete using double bubble sheets and applying low heat mixture. Experimental results of hydration heat analysis showed that crack modulus of concrete incorporating 20% of blast furnace slag cement was 1.0 in 120 hours, representing 50% probability of crack occurrence, thus requiring additional measures. As for a curing method, a specimen insulating two layers of vinyl chloride+double bubble sheets exhibited only $16.5^{\circ}C$ difference between upper and lower sections, and it also showed favorable workability as well as competitive economic side. Therefore it was determined to use it for curing method in this field. For the curing results of practical field, using 2 layers of vinyl chloride+double bubble sheets and applying low heat mixture on the fundamental mass concrete in 3A residential building exhibited less than only $15^{\circ}C$ difference between surface and center section of that in 5 days elapse and less than $20^{\circ}C$ in 9 days. This means that the crack by hydration heat was prevented, and other fields structures also resisted the plastic shrinkage by insulating the vinyl, sinking crack by second temping, even drying shrinkage by the mixture of low unit water. Therefore the crack on the placement has not been found so far, since the construction was started before 6 month.

  • Effect of amount of red mud and processing method on the tensile and impact properties of polymers were investigated when the red mud was added as a filler to polypropylene (PP), low density polyethylene (LDPE) and PP/LDPE blend. Especially in case of PP, increase in the tensile strength, elongation at break and absorbed energy was observed when extrusion was carried out more than two times. Tensile strength showed a very remarkable increase when master batch was used in comparison with simple multiple extrusion. In case of LDPE, 10% addition of red mud resulted in the increase of tensile modulus and impact strength, while 20% addition caused a decrease in the same properties. Addition of 5% EVA could reverse this trend. Addition of 20% red mud to PP/LDPE blend gave a decrease in impact strength but 5% EPR compatibilizer could improve the impact properties. Above results showed that the processing method is a very important factor in the utilization of red mud as a plastic fillers and master batch is one of the very effective way of red mud addition.

  • Clay soils have a big potential to become contaminated with the oil derivatives because they cover a vast area of the earth. The oil derivatives diffusion in the soil lead to soil contamination and changes the physical and mechanical properties of the soil specially clay soils. Soil stabilization by using new material is very important for geotechnical engineers in order to improve the engineering properties of the soil. The main subjects of this research are a- to investigate the effect of the cement and epoxy resin mixtures on the stabilization and on the mechanical parameters as well as the microstructural properties of clay soils contaminated with gasoline and kerosene, b- study on the phenomenon of clay concrete development. Practical engineering indexes such as Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), elastic modulus, toughness, elastic and plastic strains are all obtained during the course of experiments and are used to determine the optimum amount of additives (cement and epoxy resin) to reach a practical stabilization method. Microstructural tests were also conducted on the specimens to study the changes in the nature and texture of the soil. Results obtained indicated that by adding epoxy resin to the contaminated soil specimens, the strength and deformational properties are increased from 100 to 1500 times as that of original soils. Further, the UCS of some stabilized specimens reached 40 MPa which exceeded the strength of normal concrete. It is interesting to note that, in contrast to the normal concrete, the strength and deformational properties of such stabilized specimens (including UCS, toughness and strain at failure) are simultaneously increased which further indicate on suitability and applicability of the current stabilization method. It was also observed that increasing cement additive to the soil has negligible effect on the contaminated soils stabilized by epoxy resin. In addition, the epoxy resin showed a very good and satisfactory workability for the weakest and the most sensitive soils contaminated with oil derivatives.

  • Paved roads are suffered from the permanent plastic deformation in hot summer and cracks in cold winter, which are detrimental to safe driving. This leads to necessity of modification of asphalt to resist those deformation. In this study, two kinds of modifiers were examined; organic polymers and a photoinitiator which is activated by ultraviolet lay. The mechanical and rheololgical properties of modified asphalts were examined using UTM and rheometer. Results showed that the properties were varied depending on the types of polymer and irradiation time. UV irradiation increased the tensile strength and storage modulus of thermoplastic polymer-modified asphalt, however UV was not effective on thermoset polymer. According to long term ultraviolet curing test, properties of the polymer/photoinitiator-modified asphalt did not decrease, but rather increase for 20 years. This indicates that the useful life of the asphalt could be extended by addition of photoinitiator.

  • The effects of cold plasma (CP) treatments on the physicochemical and biodegradable properties of a corn biomass-containing polyester (CBPE) film were studied. The CBPE film was treated with CP generated by $N_2$, $O_2$, He, Ar, or dry air at 400-900 W and 667 Pa for 10-40 min. The glass transition temperature of the CBPE film ($-30.2--28.6^{\circ}C$) was not affected by the CP treatment, while the elastic modulus and water vapor permeability decreased (p<0.05). The ink printability was improved by the treatment and the improved printability was maintained during storage for 56 days at room temperature. Roughness of the film increased after treatments and the level of roughness appeared to increase during storage. Heat and microbial biodegradability of the CBPE film was improved by the air-CP treatment (p<0.05). These results have demonstrated the potential of applying CP treatments to improve the flexibility, printability, and biodegradability of CBPE films.

  • Embossed aluminum sheets were been used in heat insulation purpose for automative exhaust parts because of increasing their surface areas and stiffness reinforcement. However, there are many restrictions because of high rate of wrinkle occurrence on press working. We have performed the tensile and bending tests for embossed sheets to clarity its mechanical properties and springback characteristics. Embossed aluminum sheets showed a different flow stress after plastic yielding due to flattening the embossed cone shape. Above all, yield stress of parallel embossed specimen decreases while its diagonal one increases and the decrease of young's modulus in the embossed sheets contributes to the increase of springback amount.

  • TiAlCN coatings with various C contents were synthesized by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The characteristics, the crystalline structure, surface morphology, hardness, and friction coefficient of the coatings as a function of the C content were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), a microhardness tester, and a wear test. In addition, their corrosion behaviors in a deaerated 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at $40^{\circ}C$ were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization tests. The results indicated that the $Ti_{14.9}Al_{15.5}C_{30.7}N_{38.9}$ coating had the highest hardness, elastic modulus, and a plastic deformation resistance of 39 GPa, 359 GPa, and 0.55, respectively, and it also had the lowest friction coefficient of approximately 0.26. Comparative evaluation of the TiAlCN coatings indicated that a wide range of coating properties, especially coating hardness, could be obtained by the synthesis methods and processing variables. The microhardness of the coatings was much higher than that from previously reported coating using similar magnetron sputtering processes. It was almost as high as the microhardness measured from the TiAlCN coatings (~41 GPa) synthesized using an arc ion plating process. The potentiodynamic test showed that the corrosion resistance of the TiAlCN coatings was significantly better than the TiAlN coatings, and their corrosion current density ($i_{corr}$), corrosion potentials ($E_{corr}$) and corrosion rate decreased with an increasing C content in the coatings. The much denser microstructure of the coatings due to the increased amount of amorphous phase with increasing C contents in the coatings could result in the the improved corrosion resistance of the coatings.
