A coupled wall consists of two or more reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls (SWs) connected by RC coupling beams (CBs) or steel CBs (hybrid-coupled walls). To fill the gap in the literature on the plastic hinge length of coupled walls, including coupled and hybrid-coupled shear walls, a parametric study using experimentally validated numerical models was conducted considering the axial stress ratio (ASR) and coupling ratio (CR) as the study variables. A total of sixty numerical models, including both coupled and hybrid-coupled SWs, have been developed by varying the ASR and CR within the ranges of 0.027-0.25 and 0.2-0.5, respectively. A detailed analysis was conducted in order to estimate the ultimate drift, ultimate capacity, curvature profile, yielding height, and plastic hinge length of the models. Compared to hybrid-coupled SWs, coupled SWs possess a relatively higher capacity and curvature. Moreover, increasing the ASR changes the walls' behavior to a column-like member which decreases the walls' ultimate drift, ductility, curvature, and plastic hinge length. Increasing the CR of the coupled SWs increases the walls' capacity and the risk of abrupt shear failure but decreases the walls' ductility, ultimate drift and plastic hinge length. However, CR has a negligible effect on hybrid-coupled walls' ultimate drift and moment, curvature profile, yielding height and plastic hinge length. Lastly, using the obtained results two equations were derived as a function of CR and ASR for calculating the plastic hinge length of coupled and hybrid-coupled SWs.
This paper presents a study on the flexural stiffness, plastic hinge length and plastic hinge rotation capacity of reinforced high performance concrete beams. 15 beams with different strength of concrete, reinforcement ratio and the pattern of loadings were tested. From the test results of reinforced normal strength concrete beams and reinforced high performance concrete beams with the concrete which has cylinder compressive strength of 700kg/${cm}^2$, slump value of 20~25cm and slump-flow value of 60~70cm. It is found that an extreme fiber concrete compressive strain of ${\varepsilon}_{cu}=0.0047$ may be used in ultimate curvature computations of reinforced high performance concrete beams. An empirical equation is proposed to estimate the effective moment of inertia. length and rotation capacity of plastic hinge of simply supported reinforced high performance concrete beams. The estimated deflections using this equation agree well with the experimental values.
Development of flexural yielding and large rotation ductilities in the plastic hinge zones of frame members is synonymous with the spread of bar reinforcement yielding into the supporting anchorage. Yield penetration where it occurs, destroys interfacial bond between bar and concrete and reduces the strain development capacity of the reinforcement. This affects the plastic rotation capacity of the member by increasing the contribution of bar pullout. A side effect is increased strains in the compression zone within the plastic hinge region, which may be critical in displacement-based detailing procedures that are linked to concrete strains (e.g. in structural walls). To quantify the effects of yield penetration from first principles, closed form solutions of the field equations of bond over the anchorage are derived, considering bond plastification, cover debonding after bar yielding and spread of inelasticity in the anchorage. Strain development capacity is shown to be a totally different entity from stress development capacity and, in the framework of performance based design, bar slip and the length of debonding are calculated as functions of the bar strain at the loaded-end, to be used in calculations of pullout rotation at monolithic member connections. Analytical results are explored parametrically to lead to design charts for practical use of the paper's findings but also to identify the implications of the phenomena studied on the detailing requirements in the plastic hinge regions of flexural members including post-earthquake retrofits.

Reinforced concrete beams show increased ductile behavior when the compressive concrete is confined with transverse steel. In the inelastic range, the most variations of ductile behaviour are defined the equivalent length of the plastic hinge and the plastic hinge rotation. In an investigation to study the influence of such confinement, sixteen reinforced concrete beams were tested in flexure and the deflections noted at all stages of loading. For all the beams tested, the plastic hinge rotation have been computed and the effect of confinement on the same examined. The conclusions are summarized as follows: The equivalent lengths of the plastic hinge are ranged within the effective depth comparatively. The ability of the plastic hinge rotation of the reinforced concrete beams confined with transverse steel are enlarged when transverse reinforcement content are increased, but the spaces are more important as the shear force are largely increased.

Subjected to seismic action causing large deformation of bridge columns, the plastic hinge region is commonly formed in the column end zone. The deformation capacity of a concrete column can be expressed by using plastic hinge length. The mechanical properties of high-strength reinforcing steel is different from that of normal-strength steel and the mechanical properties of steel will influence the plastic hinge formation. Therefore, in other to accurately predict the deformation of concrete column using high-strength steel, the plastic hinge length can be expressed as a function of the mechanical properties of steel such as the tensile to yield strength ratio and the strain at ultimate state. However, little research has been conducted into the effect of mechanical properties of steel on the plastic hinge length. It was difficult to measure the plastic hinge length from the test results. Therefore, the plastic hinge length of concrete columns was investigated from the curvature profile. A numerical approach was used to study the effect of various parameters on plastic hinge length. Based on the results of the numerical parametric study, a new expression for plastic hinge length was proposed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate how a fully restrained bolted beam splice affects the connection behavior as a column-tree connection in steel special moment frames under cyclic loading when located within the plastic hinge zone. The impacts of this attachment in protected zone are observed by using nonlinear finite element analyses. This type of splice connection is designed as slip-critical connection and thereby, the possible effects of slippage of the bolts due to a possible loss of pretension in the bolts are also investigated. The 3D models with solid elements that have been developed includes three types of connections which are the connection having fully restrained beam splice located in the plastic hinge location, the connection having fully restrained beam splice located out of the plastic hinge and the connection without beam splice. All connection models satisfied the requirement for the special moment frame connections providing sufficient flexural resistance, determined at column face stated in AISC 341-16. In the connection model having fully restrained beam splice located in the plastic hinge, due to the pretension loss in the bolts, the friction force on the contact surfaces is exceeded, resulting in a relative slip. The reduction in the energy dissipation capacity of the connection is observed to be insignificant. The possibility of the crack occurrence around the bolt holes closest to the column face is found to be higher for the splice connection within the protected zone.

In this study, displacement ductility capacity and plastic hinge regions of reinforced concrete multi-column bent with different transverse reinforcement ratio are investigated. The ductility increases remarkably as transverse reinforcement ratio increase and the multi-column bent loaded along transverse direction is more ductile. The plastic hinge length for special detailing requirements of transverse reinforcement is estimated. For high target ductility, plastic hinge length for confinement should be extended with increased transverse reinforcement ratio. The plastic hinge length of multi-column bent loaded along transverse direction is shorter than that along longitudinal direction, because of the different moment distribution.
This paper describes a method of the refined plastic hinge approach in the framework of the higher-order element formulation that can efficaciously evaluate the limit state capacity of a whole reinforced concrete structural system using least number of element(s), whereas the traditional design of a reinforced concrete structure (i.e. AS3600; Eurocode 2) is member-based approach. Hence, in regard to the material nonlinearities, the efficient and economical cross-section analysis is provided to evaluate the element section capacity of non-uniform and arbitrary concrete section subjected to the interaction effects, which is helpful to formulate the refined plastic hinge method. In regard to the geometric nonlinearities, this paper relies on the higher-order element formulation with element load effect. Eventually, the load redistribution can be considered and make full use of the strength reserved owing to the redundancy of an indeterminate structure. And it is particularly true for the performance-based design of a structure under the extreme loads, while the uncertainty of the extreme load is great that the true behaviour of a whole structural system is important for the economical design approach, which is great superiority over the conservative optimal strength of an individual and isolated member based on traditional design (i.e. AS3600; Eurocode 2).
In this paper, the effect of material elasticity was evaluated through a simple model as proposed by Wang and Yu (1991), for yield mechanisms of a cantilever beam under tip pulse loading. The beam was assumed rigid-perfectly plastic but instead of the usual fully clamped constraints at its root, an elastic-perfectly plastic rotational spring was introduced there so the system had a certain capacity to absorb elastic energy. Compared with a rigid-perfectly plastic beam without a spring root, the present beam-spring model showed differences in the initial plastic hinge position and the minimum magnitude of the dynamic force needed to produce a plastic failure. It was also shown that various failure responses may happen while the hinge travels along the beam segment towards the root, rather than a unique response mode as in a rigid perfectly plastic analysis.
Although a critical section reaches its flexural strength in reinforced concrete structures, the structure does not always fail because moment redistribution occurs during the formation of plastic hinges. Inelastic deformation in a plastic hinge region results in plastic rotation. A plastic hinge mainly depends on material characteristics. In this study, a plastic hinge length and plastic rotation are evaluated using the flexural curvature distribution which is derived from the material models given in Eurocode 2. The influence on plastic capacity the limit values of the material model used, that is, ultimate strain of concrete and steel and hardening ratio of steel(k), are investigated. As results, it is appeared that a large ultimate strain of concrete and steel is resulting in large plastic capactiy and also as a hardening ratio of steel increases, the plastic rotation increases significantly. Therefore, a careful attention would be paid to determine the limit values of material characteristics in the RC structures.
