The improvement of surface roughness of machined cylindrical rods through the plastic polishing process was studied in this paper. The criterion and limits for the plastic polishing process due to the wave motion of the ridge were established with respect to process variables: ridge shape and size, semi-cone die angle as well as friction factor, by the application of the upper-bound approach. The surface roughness of the plastic polished products was measured, and compared with that of the original specimen. Also the depth of the surface deformation layer was tested, and compared those of the theoretical values. Qualitative agreement exists between the experimental plastic polishing loads and theoretical loads. The wave motion of the ridge was mostly occurred within the established limits. The surface roughness of specimens was sufficiently improved through the present process. Also the predicted depth of the surface deformation layer was in good agreement with experimental results.

Adhesion of Cu/Cr and Cu/$Cu_xCr_{1-x}$ thin films onto polyimide substrates has been studied. For an adhesion layer, Cr or Cu-Cr alloy films were deposited onto polyimide using DC magnetron sputtering machine. Then Cu was sputter-deposited and finally, Cu was electroplated. Adhesion was evaluated using $90^{\circ}C$ peel test or T-peel test. Plastic deformation of the peeled metal layer was qualitatively measured using XRD technique. It is confirmed that high interfacial fracture energy and large plastic deformation are important to enhance the peel adhesion strength. High peel strength is obtained when the interface is strongly bonded. More ductile film has higher peel strength. In Cu-Cr alloy films, opposite effects of the Cr addition in the alloy film on the peel strength are operative: a beneficial effect of strong interfacial bonding and a negative effect of smaller plastic deformation.

The wear behaviour of steam generator (SG) tubes (Inconel 600 and 690) against support materials (405 and 409 ferritic stainless steels) has been experimentally studied in room temperature water using reciprocating wear apparatus with tube-an-plate configuration. The results showed that the wear rate of Inconel 690 was lower than that of lnconel 600 with increasing normal loads and sliding amplitudes. Also, plastic deformation layers appear below the surface of both SG tubes, which have a specific thickness and are small compared with their grain size. This means that wear rate of SG tubes in water condition is closely related to the formation and fracture of plastic deformation layers.
This paper explains the process design for improving tool life in the conventional hot forging process. The thermal load and the thermal softening are happened by contact between the hotter billet and the cooler tools in hot forging process. Tool life decreases considerably due to the softening of the surface layer of a tool was caused by a high thermal load and long contact time between the tools and the billet. Also, tool life is to a large extent limited by wear, heat crack and plastic deformation in hot forging process. Above all, the main factors which affect die accuracy and tool life we wear and the plastic deformation of a tool. The newly developed techniques for predicting tool life are applied to estimate the production quantity for a spindle component and these techniques can be applied to improve the tool life in hot forging process.
Generally, fracture of a material is influenced by plastic zone size developed near the crack tip. Hence, according to the relative size of plastic zone in the material, the mechanics as a tool for analyzing the fracture process are classified into three kinds, that is, Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, Elastic Plastic Fracture Mechanics, Large Deformation Fracture Mechanics. Even though the plastic zone size is such an important parameter, the practical measurement techniques are very limited and the one for in-situ measurement is not virtually available. Therefore, elastic-plastic FEA has been performed to estimate the plastic zone size. In this study, it is noticed that side necking at the surface is a consequence of plastic deformation and lateral contraction and the relation between the plastic zone and side necking is investigated. FEA for modified boundary layer models with finite thickness, various mode mixities $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and strain hardening exponent n=3, 10 are performed. The results are presented and the implication regarding to application to experiment is discussed.

Under repeated rolling, initial plastic deformation introduces residual stresses which render the steady cyclic state purely elastic. This is called the process of shakedown. Many studies have been done about the shakedown in semi-infinite half space using calculated Hertizian pressure. In this paper shakedown processes in a shaft are studied by finite element analyses of a two dimensional(plane strain) model with elastic-linear-kinematic-hardening-plastic material subjected to repeated, frictionless rolling contact. Symmetric and non-symmetric pressure distributions are obtained using a simplified model of the bearing-shaft assembly. The rolling contact is simulated by repeatedly translating both pressure distributions along the surface of the shaft. By the influence of the non-symmetric pressure, larger residual radial tensile stress is generated in the immediate subsurface layer, which may make a crack propagate and, the subsurface undergoes a zigzag plastic deformation during the shakedown process, which may lead to a crack initiation.

It has been known that the ferritic stainless steel can be changed to martensitic stainless steel when nitrogen is added. However the high hardness of martensitic stainless steel prevents the plastic deformation. In this study, instead of martensite, the surface microstructure was changed into nitrogen pearlite to increase the plastic deformation easily by isothermal heat treatment after high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) the AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel. The isothermal treatment was carried out at $780^{\circ}C$ for 4, 6, and 10 hrs, respectively, after HTGN treatment at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs. The surface layer of isothermal-treated steel appeared nitrogen pearlite composed with fine chromium nitride and ferrite. Hence, the interior region that was not affected by nitrogen permeation exhibited ferrite phase. When quenching the isothermal treated steel at 1100oC, martensitic phase formed at the surface layer. The hardness of surface layer of isothermal-treated steel and quenched steel measured the value of 150~240 Hv and 630 Hv, respectively.

Plastically deformed layer beneath metal surface machined by orthogonal cutting was evaluated in terms of residual stress, microvickers hardness, side spread, and the side strain. An attempt was made to predict the depth of layer according to machining conditions particularly tool geometry and the shear plane angle. In this paper, we employed two models concerning the sliplines. The exact model was validated by comparision of computed and measured tool force and its angle, and the model offers an upper boundary of the deformed layer to be in good agreement with the experiment.
Multilayer(clad) sheets, composed of two or more materials with different properties, are fabricated using the roll-bonding process. A good formability is an essential property for a multilayered sheet in order to manufacture parts by plastic deformation. In this study, the influences of temperature and strain rate on the plastic properties of stainless steel-aluminum-magnesium multilayered(STS-Al-Mg) sheets were investigated. Tensile tests were performed at various temperatures and strain rates on the multilayered sheet and on each separate layer. Fracture of the multilayered sheet was observed to be temperature-dependent. At the base temperature of $200^{\circ}C$, all materials fractured simultaneously. At lower temperatures, the Mg alloy sheet fractured earlier than the other materials. Conversely, the other materials fractured earlier than the Mg alloy sheet at higher temperatures. The uniform and total elongations of the multilayered sheet were observed to be higher than that of each material at a temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. Larger uniform elongations were obtained for higher strain rates at constant temperature. The same trend was observed for the Mg alloy sheet, which exhibited the lowest elongation among the three materials. The tensile strengths and elongations of the single layer sheets were compared to those of the multilayer material. The strength of the multilayered sheet was successfully calculated by the rule of mixture from the values of each single layer. However, no simple correlation between the elongation of each layer and that of the multilayer was obtained.
