This study was conducted to examine the effect of dietary iron levels on lipid metabolism, antioxidative and antithrombogenic capacities in 16-month-old rats. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley male 16-month-old rats weighing 618 $\pm$ 6 g were raised for 10 days with medium-iron diet (35 ppm in diet) and blocked into 4 groups according to their body weights. One of groups was sacrificed to obtain initial data and the rest 3 groups were raised for 3 months with experimental diets containing different levels of iron (5 ppm, 35 ppm, and 350 ppm). Total lipid, triglyceride and total chole-sterol concentrations in plasma and liver, HDL-cholesterol concentration in plasma, fecal total lipid triglyceride and total cholesterol excretions, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) level in plasma LDL + VLDL (low density lipoprotein + very low density lipoprotein) fractions, blood-clotting time and eicosanoids levels in plasma were measured. The results are as follows: Plasma total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations, TBARS level in plasma LDL + VLDL fractions were increased and blood-clotting time tended to be shortened during 3 months of experimental period. Low (5 ppm) iron diet improved lipid metabolism via increasing HDL-cholesterol and fecal choles-terol excretion. High (350 ppm) iron diet decreased plasma total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations as compared to medium (35 ppm) iron diet and lowered body weight and epididymal fat pad weight. On the other hand, TBARS level in plasma LDL + VLDL fractions and blood-clotting time were increased with high iron diet. It is plausible that low iron diet improves lipid metabolism, antioxidative and antithrombogenic capacities in 16-month-old rats.
A retrospective study was designed to determine whether there were any differences in prepartal blood biochemical parameters between cows developed subclinical ketosis (SCK) and non-SCK cows. Data on blood biochemistry from 33 Holstein parturient cows (15 SCK and 18 non-SCK cows) in one farm for one year, were compared. Plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate, non-esterified fatty acid and glucose concentrations were utilized in the diagnosis of SCK and showed significant differences between SCK and non-SCK cows after calving. Before calving, however, only plasma total cholesterol concentration in SCK cows was significantly lower than that in non-SCK cows. Consequently, it seems that lower plasma total cholesterol concentration before calving is related to the occurrence of SCK immediately after calving.

The present study was carried out to summarize the effect of garlic in the hyperlipidemia rats by meta-analysis related studies. The association measure to test effect of garlic was the mean difference (MD). In this particular fixed-effect model of mean difference, body weight, liver weight, kidney weight and heart weight were significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Also, blood glucose, plasma total cholesterol, plasma triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, liver cholesterol, liver triglycerides were significantly decreased. HDL-cholesterol was significantly increased. In this case of heterogeneous variable, random effect model was applied. In this model, liver weight, blood glucose, plasma total cholesterol, plasma triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, liver cholesterol, liver triglycerides were significantly decreased. HDL-cholesterol was significantly increased. According to the meta-regression analysis, duration of injection was significantly for kidney weight, testis weight, plasma total cholesterol, plasma triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDLcholesterol, liver cholesterol, liver triglycerides.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of antioxidation related to aging of Cheongeumyeonsudan which is written on Dongui-bogam experimentally. Method : 14 weeks aged SD albino rats were separated into uncontrolled group, controlled group and CGY group. As controlled and CGY groups were induced aging by subcutaneous injection of D-galactose, at the same time we administered the extract of Cheongeumyeonsudan to CGY group for 6 weeks. After then we drew blood from each group, and took measurements; the activity of SOD, GSH-px, catalase in erythrocytes, TBARS value, concentration of total lipid, tryglycende, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol in blood plasma. Results : The activities of SOD, GSH-px in erythrocytes were significantly increased in the CGY group compared with control group. The activity of catalase showed a tendency to increase, but it was nor remarkable. The concentration of total lipid, the values of TBARS and total cholesterol was significantly decreased in the CGY group compared with control group, and the concentration of plasma HDL-cholesterol was not remarkable. The concentration of tryglycende in plasma showed a tendency to decreased. Conclusions : it is suggested that Cheongeumyeonsudan decreased the activities of free radical, the concentration of lipid in plasma and generate enzyme which form lipid peroxide.
The effects of several carbohydrate sources on plasma, liver and fecal lipid contents of rats fed diet containing sucrose, corn starch, brown rice, milled rice or wheat flour with 0.3% cholesterol for four weeks were investigated. Plasma triglyceride and total cholestrol increased significntly in sucrose group, and decreased significantly in milled rice group compared to other three groups. There were no significant differences in plasma lipid contents among corn starch, brown rice and wheat flour groups. The contents of liver triglyceride and cholesterol in brown rice group decreased significantly compared to there four groups. Fecal excretion of total cholesterol in rice and wheat flour groups was significantly higher than in sucrose and corn starch groups. The contents of fecal bile acid increased significantly in milled rice and brown rice groups compared to other three groups. Fecal bile acid content of wheat flour group was similar to those of sucrose and corn starch group. From these results, it is suggested that rice has a possibility of hypolipidemic effect in cholesterol fed rat.
The effects of age and dietary fatty acid composition on lipid metabolism were investigated in Sprague-Dawley strain male rats. These animals weighing 88.6$\pm$2.2g were fed 10% dietary fat(W/W, 20% of total energy) with 0.5, 1, 2 P/S ratio and in each P/S ratio there were three different levels of n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio ; 2, 4, 8. The experimental period was 1 month, 6 months and 12 months. The results of this study were as follows. The body weight of rats increased rapidly for the first two months, then increased slowly until 7 to 8 months. After 10 months of dietary regimen their weight decreased. The weight of liver, kidney and epidydimal fat pad increased along with the body weight and then decreased in the 12 months. Plasma total lipid increased with age and it decreased significantly when P/S ratio of dietary fatty acid was high. In creased with age and it decreased significantly when P/S ratio of dietary fatty acid was high. In creasing n-3 fatty acid intake in each P/S ratio resulted in lower plasma total lipid although was not statistically significant. The amount of plasma total cholesterol increased at 6 months, but decreased at 12 months. In case of 1, 12 months, increasing P/S ratio significantly plasma total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were decreased and hepatic cholesterol was increased, VLDL-HDL-cholesterol did not changed. The n-6/n-3 ratio did not affect any of theses. The amount of plasma triglyceride and VLDL-triglyceride increased at 6 month then decreased. When the rats consumed higher amount of n-3 fatty acid in each P/S ratio, their plasma triglyceride and hepatic triglyceride increased at 1, 12months.

This study was carried out to determine, the effects of sodium alginate and cellulose on the plasma lipoportein composition and cholesterol metabolism inrats. Each experimental diet contained 105 sodium alginate and cellulose by weight, respectivley and rats were fed fro 4 weeks. The results obtained were as follows : The feeding of sodium alginate and cellulose decreased total plasma cholesterol slightly . total cholesterol of Chylomicron /VLDL- , LDL-fraction and liver were decreased significantly insodium alginate group. HDL-cholesterol was slightly increased in soidum alginate group. The feeding of sodium alginate significantly lowered plasma , Chylomicron VLDL-, LDL-fraction and liver TG concentrations compared with those fed fiber-free diet . The HMG-CoA reductase activity was not different among diet groups but the lowest activity was observed in sodium alginate group. The feeding of sodium alginate significantly increased fecal cholesterol , TG, and bile acid excretion . In summary , the ingestion of sodium alginate decreased cholesterol and TG concentrations of plasma and liver. This may be explained by the facts that fecal cholesterol, bile acid and TG level were increased significantly in sodium alginate group.

To investigate the effects of krill and cadmium on lipid composition of plasma in cholesterol-fed rats, male Sprague-Dawley rats were raised for 4 weeks with 8 experimental diets. The cholesterol, ${\beta}-lipoprotein$, phospholipid and triglyceride concentration of plasma in rats fed krill diets containing below 5%9w/w) krill were not significant differences in comparison with those of control diet. The ingestion of cadmium caused a significant increase in free cholesterol 91.6-fold), triglyceride 91.6-fold), ${\beta}-lipoprotein$(1.4-fold) and total cholesterol (1.3-fold) level, and then HDL-cholesterol concentration of cadmium diet was 1.6-fold lower than that of control diet. The krill supplement of cadmium diet rather resulted in a increase in total cholesterol, free cholesterol, ${\beta}-lipoprotein$ and triglyceride concentration of plasma.
To investigate the effects mustard leaf(Brassica Juncea) on Cholesterol metabolism, male Sprague Dawley rate were fed semipurified diets containing 2% or 4% mustard leaf with or without cholesterol for 5 weeks. Plasma cholesterol content decreased significantly by feeding 4% mustard leaf with of without cholesterol for 5 weeks. Plasma cholesterol content decreased significantly by feeding 4% mustard leaf in rats fed 1% cholesterol in the diet. In addition, HDL-cholesterol increased slightly by the feeding of mustard leaf, resulting in a significant increase in the HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio and a reduction of atherosclerotic index. However, levels of plasma lipids were not influenced by mustared leaf in rats fed cholesterol-free diet. The contents of all classes of lipid in liver increased by dietary cholesterol. Of the liver lipids, triglyceride and cholesterol ester were accumulated most, showing a fatty liver synodrome. Supplementation of mustard leaf to cholesterol-containing diet resulted in a slight decrease in neutral lipid contents of liver. Fecal cholesterol excretion was higher by more than 2.7 and 3.3-fold in rats fed 2 and 4% mustard leaf than in control rats fed cholesterol. Similar trends were found in fecal bile salt excretion; rats fed and 4% mustard leaf excreted more bile salts by more than 1.5 and 2% than those fed control diet containing cholesterol. In summary, mustard leaf may have an antiatherogenci effect of reducing plasma cholesterol level and increasing HDL-cholesterol level. The plasma cholesterol lowering effect of mustard leaf is suggested to be due, at least in part, to increase in fecal excretion of cholesterol and bile acids.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of garlic vinegar supplementation on changes in body weight, blood glucose and serum triglyceride and cholesterol. Rats were fed a cholesterol-diet with or without garlic vinegar (20% garlic juice )supplement for 28days. Body weights in rats fed a diet containing garlic vinegar were significantly lower than those of control rats. The concentration of plasma glucose, total cholesterol . LDL-cholesterol , and HDL-cholesterol were not significantly different between the two groups for a period of up to four weeks. However, the concentration of plasma triglyceride was slightly decreased in the garlic vinegar-supplemented group. Results suggest that the supplementation of garlic vinegar is beneficial for weight reduction in high-cholesterol fed rats.
