  • Six parent and their 12 gamma ray-induced somatic flower colour mutants of garden rose were characterized to discriminate the mutants from their respective parents and understanding the genetic diversity using Random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Out of 20 primers screened, 14 primers yielded completely identical fragments patterns. The other 7 primers gave highly polymorphic banding patterns among the radiomutants. All the cultivars were identified by using only 7 primers. Moreover, individual mutants were also distinguished by unique RAPD marker bands. Based on the presence or absence of the 48 polymorphic bands, the genetic variations within and among the 18 cultivars were measured. Genetic distance between all 18 cultivars varied from 0.40 to 0.91, as revealed by Jaccard's coefficient matrix. A dendrogram was constructed based on the similarity matrix using the Neighbor Joining Tree method showed three main clusters. The present RAPD analysis can be used not only for estimating genetic diversity present in gamma ray-induced mutants but also for correct identification of mutant/new varieties for their legal protection under plant variety rights.

  • A new coreopsis cultivar, 'Uridream Pink', was developed by mutation breeding using gamma-ray irradiation. Rooted cuttings of 'Uridream 01', developed at Uriseed Company, were exposed to various gray ranges of gamma-rays from a $^{60}CO$ source for 24 h in 2009 at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Using gamma-rays with the range of 10-100 Gy, a chimeric mutant with pastel pink flowers was induced at 30 Gy from 'Uridream 01', which blooms red-purple flowers (Red-purple group, 59A). Clones that produced flowers with modified pink color were separated from the chimeric mutant and fixed by more than three rounds of cutting back from 2009 to 2010. The separated mutant clones with modified pink color were found to bloom flowers with marketable color and be free of any abnormal plant characteristics. The typical color of the flowers was pastel pink (Red-purple group, 67B), and the clones were registered as 'Uridream Pink' at the Korea Seed and Variety Service (plant variety protection number: 4410). Although the size of flowers and leaves of 'Uridream Pink' are smaller than those of 'Uridream 01', the number of flowers per plant is greater. 'Uridream Pink' can be used as both a pot and a garden plant because of its long blooming period from late spring to late autumn.

  • Field trial was conducted at the Research Farm of the Katsina State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority during the farming season of 2004 with a view to evaluate/determine the efficacy of some selected plant-derived biopesticides against the insect pests of cowpea as well as their effect on yield. The variety of the cowpea used was IT86D-719 and the plant derived biopesticides evaluated during the trial were chilli pepper, garlic, ginger, neem, sweetsop and tobacco. The experimental field was ploughed, harrowed and thereafter ridged before the commencement of the 2004 planting season. A total of twenty one (21) experimental plots were demarcated and arranged into seven treatment plots. The size of each plot was $5m{\times}4m$ while interspaces between adjacent plot and blocks were 1m and 2m, respectively. Results of the experiments showed that all the plant-derived biopesticide treatments were significantly (p>0.05) better than control treatment. The order of effectiveness of the treatments was tobacco (80-90%), sweetsop (75-85%), garlic (70-80), neem (72-78%), chilli pepper (60-70%) and ginger (30-50%). Furthermore, yield result corresponded positively with the effectiveness of the treatments. Results of the present finding suggest the use of tobacco, sweetsop and garlic as promising biopesticides in the control of cowpea insect pests.

  • Isowogonin, 5,8-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone, is a flavonoid isolated from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, a medicinal plant traditionally used since the ancient time. It was thought to possess a variety of biological activities, such as antioxidation, anti-inflammation and hepatoprotective effect. But a quantity of isowogonin obtained from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi is not that enough for in vivo test. There have been no appropriate approaches available for a facile synthesis of isowogonin. So we describe a concise and efficient scheme for synthesis of isowogonin from a commercial available 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenol, which includes the Fries rearrangement and selective demethylation as key steps.
