  • Today a conventional water treatment system has many problems. The ozone/GAC process, sometimes termed Biological Activated Carbon(BAC), appeared to be effective for the removal of soluble organic matters in the drinking water. The water quality of Nak-dong river in Pusan, generally shows BDOC 30-40% and NBDOC 60-70%. The pilot plant installed at the Duk-san water works that was been largest treatability(1,650,000ton/day) in Pusan. A experimental water in the pilot plant made use of the water after sand-filteration. Following results are drawn from this study. Initial adsorption velocity($DOC/DOC_o/T$) in the pure adsorption of GAG had a 0.0225, it's velocity changed to 0.006 after ozone added and the optimum ozone dose ranged of $1.4-2.0mgO_3/L$. A experimental water in the pilot plant composed with humic material(78%). Humic material composed with humic acid(20%) and fulvic acid(56%), and it's rate changed to 18 and 50% respectively after ozone added. DOC constantly decreased in the EBCTs and removal efficieny in the 15min of EBCT was 45-50%. It showed the largest removal rate of BDOC in the EBCT 5 and among the season, characteristics of removal varied. The HPC distributed over $10^6-10^7CFU/cm^3$ in the bed depth and among the season, distribution of HPC were differential.

  • Infection of pepper leaves by Colletotrichum cocodes at the two- and eight-leaf stages caused susceptible and resistant lesions 96 h after inoculation, respectively. At the two-leaf stage, progressive symptom development occurred on the infected leaves. In contrast, localized necrotic spots were characteristic symptoms at the eight-leaf stage. Infected leaves at the two-leaf stage exhibited cell death accompanied by the accumulation of autofluorescent compounds. At the eight-leaf stage, pepper leaves infected by the anthracnose fungus displayed localized autofluorescence from the symptoms. Infection of pepper leaves by C. cocodes at the two-leaf stage resulted in its rapidand massive colonization of all the leaf tissues including the vascular tissue, together with cytoplasmic collapse, distortion of chloroplasts, and disruption of host cell walls. However, penetration of C. cocodes was very limited in the older leaf tissues of pepper plants at the eight-leaf stage. Fungal hyphae grew only in the intramural spaces of the epidermal cell walls at this stage. Occlusion of amorphous material in xylem vessels, aggregation of fibrillar material in inter-cellular spaces, and deposition of protein bodies were found as resistance responses to C. cocodes.

  • To evaluate the potential of naturally occurring aldose reductase (AR) inhibitors from food material, MeOH extract and stepwise polarity fractions from tartary buckwheat and two common Korean buckwheat cultivars, yangjul-maemil and daesan-maemil, were tested on AR inhibition in rat lens in vitro. The EtOAc fraction from tartary buckwheat exhibited good AR inhibitory activity ($IC_{50}$ value, $8.19\;{\mu}g$/ml). A portion of the EtOAc fraction from tartary buckwheat led to the isolation of rutin by MeOH recrystalization. Rutin exhibited good AR inhibitory activity ($IC_{50}$ value, $9.28\;{\mu}M$). These results suggest that tartary buckwheat could be a useful food material in the development of a novel AR inhibitory agent against diabetic complications.

  • The carbonation process is affected by both the concrete material properties such as W/C ratio, types of cement and aggregates, admixture characteristics and the environmental factors such as $CO_2$ concentration, temperature, humidity. Based on results of preliminary study on carbonation, this study is to develop a carbonation prediction model by taking account of $CO_2$ concentration, temperature, humidity ad W/C ratio among major factor affecting the carbonation process. And to constitute a model formula which correspond to the mix design of the nuclear power plant, test coefficient that correspond to the design of the nuclear power plant is obtained based on the results of accelerated carbonation test. Also a field coefficient which is obtained based on results of the field examination is included to improve the conformity of the actual structures of nuclear power plant.

  • Very little utilization of the fruits of Malus baccata(Rosaceae) has been employed for food and medicinal plants except for preparing fruit beverages. But, it was estimated as valuable to investigate the chemical components for the botanical resource of this plant. In this study, it was found that the fruits of this plant contained primary long chain alcohol, ${\beta}-sitosterol$, campesterol, ursolic acid and ${\beta}-_D-glucosides$ of ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and campesterol. However, phloretin(dihydrochalcone) and its 5-O-glucoside(phloridzin) known as plant growth regulators in many Rosaceae plants were not found in this plant material by co-TLC analysis with authentic specimens. Although plant sex hormone, estrone, was often contained in relates of M. baccata, e.g., Prunus spp., Crataegus spp. and Malus spp., this compound was not detected in this fruit by comparison with an authentic material. By RIC chromatography, it was suggested that the Soxhlet extraction by the solvent of ether was excellently useful to extract ursolic acid efficiently.

  • Cup-plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) has potential to produce high biomass and highly digestible forage in the wetlands where other productive forages do not grow or produce well. However, high moisture content at harvest is a considerable disadvantage of cup-plant for the production of high quality silage. This study was conducted to determine the effect of moisture content on the characteristics of cup-plant silage. Harvested cup-plant was ensiled in farm scale plastic bag silos and laboratory silos. In the plastic bag silos, first growth (FG) and regrowth (RG) cup-plant was harvested, wilted and ensiled. Dry matter content of FG and RG was 280 g/kg and 320 g/kg after 48 hr of wilting. The silage made with FG had pH 5.3 and 5.63 g/kg DM of acetate as a major volatile fatty acid. The composition of lactate, butyrate and acetate production was 1.0: 0.9: 2.3. The pH of silage made with RG was 4.5 and lactate was a major fermentation end product (16.8 g/kg DM). In the laboratory silos, wilted and unwilted first growth cup-plant material was ensiled to compare the early fermentation end products at days 2, 4, 11, and 40. Wilting increased dry matter content by 42% in the harvested material. Wilted silage showed about one unit lower pH until day 11. The contents of ammonia nitrogen and acetate were higher in un wilted silage, while that of lactate was higher in wilted silage (p<0.05). Butyrate and propionate were not detected in the wilted silage until day 40. We conclude from the results that moisture control is essential for the production of high quality cup-plant silage and high pH of cup-plant silage is due to low concentrations of fermentation end products.

  • A bioassay is a test system using a living organism (in whole or in part) to determine the presence or relative potency of chemical substances. The development and uses of bioassay are intimately linked to the discovery and characterization of the major classes of plant hormones. An application of this relationship is helpful for understanding the concept of plant hormones as well as the use of bioassay. And plant bioassay have been development and employed not only for the discovery and characterization of the biological activity of plant growth regulators but also have served several important secondary roles. The ideal bioassay should possess the characteristic of high specificity. great sensitivity. short response time, low cost and ease of obtaining plant material. acceptable ease of manipulation, and minimal space and equipment requirements.

  • This study was carried out to test the antimicrobial activities of nano metal hybrid materials produced by plasma technologies (radio frequency-thermal plasma system and direct current sputtering system) against microbes isolated from cucurbit (watermelon, pumpkin, and gourd) seeds. Eight different nano metal hybrid materials and four carriers were tested against five different fungal and ten different bacterial isolates in vitro. Among the tested nano metal hybrid material, Brass/CaCO3 (1,000 ppm) exhibited 100% antimicrobial effect against all the five tested fungi. However, nano metal hybrid material Brass/CaCO3 (1,000 ppm) inhibited only four bacterial isolates, Weissella sp., Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, Burkholderia sp., and Enterococcus sp. at 100% level, and did not inhibited other six bacterial isolates. Nano metal hybrid material graphite-nickel (G-Ni) showed 100% inhibition rate against Rhizopus stolonifer and 52.94-71.76% inhibition rate against four different fungal isolates. Nano metal hybrid material G-Ni did not show any inhibition effects against tested ten bacterial isolates. In summary, among the tested eight different nano metal hybrid materials and four carriers, Brass/CaCO3 showed inhibition effects against five fungal isolates and four bacterial isolates, and G-Ni showed variable inhibition effects (52.94-100%) against five fungal isolates and did not show any inhibition effects against all the bacterial isolates.

  • Background: Definition and grouping of initiating events (IEs) are important basics for probabilistic safety assessment (PSA). An IE in a spent fuel reprocessing plant (SFRP) is an event that probably leads to the release of dangerous material to jeopardize workers, public and environment. The main difference between SFRPs and nuclear power plants (NPPs) is that hazard materials spread diffusely in a SFRP and radioactive material is just one kind of hazard material. Materials and Methods: Since the research on IEs for NPPs is in-depth around the world, there are several general methods to identify IEs: reference of lists in existence, review of experience feedback, qualitative analysis method, and deductive analysis method. While failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) is an important qualitative analysis method, master logic diagram (MLD) method is the deductive analysis method. IE identification in SFRPs should be consulted with the experience of NPPs, however the differences between SFRPs and NPPs should be considered seriously. Results and Discussion: The plutonium uranium reduction extraction (Purex) process is adopted by the technics in a model reprocessing plant. The first extraction cycle (FEC) is the pivotal process in the Purex process. Whether the FEC can function safely and steadily would directly influence the production process of the whole plant-production quality. Important facilities of the FEC are installed in the equipment cells (ECs). In this work, IEs in the FEC process were identified and categorized by FMEA and MLD two methods, based on the fact that ECs are containments in the plant. Conclusion: The results show that only two ECs in the FEC do not need to be concerned particularly with safety problems, and criticality, fire and red oil explosion are IEs which should be emphatically analyzed. The results are accordant with the references.

  • Despite the recent depression of the construction industry, overseas plant market especially Middle East plant market is booming owing to the high oil price. Since many Middle Eastern countries are placing orders of big scale projects based on the high oil price, Korean EPC contractor are trying to get over the depression through theses plants. Presently, since the plant market is in prosperous condition in general, it is not hard to get overseas orders; however the original licenses that requirehigher technology and high added values are exclusive for advanced engineering companies which great difficulty is predicted for developing countries like us to join the crowd. Therefore, the objective of this study is to propose establishment of material management system on the filed to gain optimized effect of material management in connection with procurement system that all the procurement related personals execute tasks in advanced level by systemizing the task operation within the knowledge and task ability in time for plant construction procurement as a method to strengthening the competitiveness of Korean companies.
