Structural design, in general, is developed through trial and error technique which is guided by standards criteria and based on the intuition and experience of the engineer, a context that leads to structural over-dimensioning, with uneconomic solutions. Aiming to find the optimal design, structural optimization methods have been developed to find a balance between cost, structural safety, and material performance. These methods have become a great opportunity in the steel structural engineering domain since they have as their main purpose is weight minimization, a factor directly correlated to the real cost of the structure. Assuming an objective function of minimum weight with stress and displacement constraints provided by Brazilian standards, the present research proposes the sizing optimization and combined approach of sizing and shape optimization, through a software developed to implement the Simulated Annealing metaheuristic algorithm. Therefore, two steel plane frame layouts, each admitting four typical truss geometries, were proposed in order to expose the difference between the optimal solutions. The assessment of the optimal solutions indicates a notable weight reduction, especially in sizing and shape optimization combination, in which the quantity of design variables is increased along with the search space, improving the efficiency of the optimal solutions achieved.

The algorithm proposed utilizes the tow-levels technique. In the first level which consists of teeatment only the applied load and design stress as the random variables whose parent distribution has the normal distribution, the cross-sectional areas of the truss members such that the their probabilities of failure have the preseribed failure probabilites are optimized by transforming the nonlinear problem into SUMT, and solving it utilizing modified Newton-Raphson method. In the second level, the geometric shape of truss structure is optimized by utilizing the unidirectional search technique of Powell method which makes it possible to minimize only the objective function. The algorithm proposed is numerically tested for the several truss structures with various shapes and loading conditions. The numerical analysis shows that the rate of decreasing the weight of truss structures is dependent on the prescribed failure probability of the each member of truss structure and the covariance of the applied load and design stress.

This study presents a structural design optimizing sizes of high-rise steel plane truss members by maximizing stiffness subjected to given volume constraints. The sizing optimum design is evaluated by using a well-known optimality criteria (OC) of gradient-based optimization methods. In typical size optimization methods, truss structures are optimized with respect to minimum weight with constraints on the value of some displacement and on the member stresses. The proposed method is an inversed size optimization process in comparisons with the typical size optimization methods since it maximizes stiffness associated with stresses or displacements subjected to volume constraints related to weight. The inversed approach is another alternative to classical size optimization methods in order to optimize members' sizes in truss structures. Numerical applications of a round shape steel pipe truss structure are studied to verify that the proposed maximum stiffness-based size optimization design is suitable for optimally developing truss members's sizes.
The purpose of this study is to develop a technique for the shape analysis of plane truss structures under prescribed displacement modes. The shape analysis is performed based on the existence theorem of the solution and the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse matrix. In this paper, the homologous deformation of structures was proposed as prescribed displacement modes, the shape of the structure is determined from these various modes and applied loads. In general, the shape analysis is a kind of inverse problem different from stress analysis, and the governing equation becomes nonlinear. In this regard, Newton-Raphson method was used to solve the nonlinear equation. Three different shape models are investigated as numerical examples to show the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this study, decompositive optimization method of two levels was selected to optimize effectively the geometry of the truss which takes the multi-loading condition, and the allowable stress, bucking stress, displacement and natural frequency constraints into consideration. The algorithm of this study is made up of sectional optimization using the feasible direction method in level 1, and geometrical optimization employing Powell's one-direction search method which menimizes only objictive function in level 2. The results of this study acquired by beenning applied to structural model of the truss are as follows : 1. It is verified that the algorithm of this study effectively converges, independent of the initial geometry of the truss and the applied various constraints. 2. The optimum goemetry of the truss varies more considerably according to the constraints selected. 3. Under the condition of the same design, the weight of the truss can be decreased more considerably by means of optimizing even the geometry of truss than by means of optimizing the section of truss while fixing geometrical configuration of it, even though there might be a little difference according to the initial geometry of the truss and the design condition.

In this paper a simple mathematical model for approximate static analysis of combined system of framed tube, shear core and two outrigger-belt truss structures subjected to lateral loads is presented. In the proposed methodology, framed tube is modeled as a cantilevered beam with a box section and interaction between shear core and outrigger-belt truss system with framed tube is modeled using torsional springs placed at location of outrigger-belt truss; these torsional springs act in a direction opposite to rotation generated by lateral loads. The effect of shear lag on axial deformation in flange is quadratic and in web it is a cubic function of geometry. Here the total energy of the combined system is minimized with respect to lateral deflection and rotation in plane section. Solution of the resulting equilibrium equations yields the unknown coefficients of shear lag along with the stress and displacement distributions. The results of a numerical example, 50 storey building subjected to three different types of lateral loading obtained from SAP2000 are compared to those of the proposed method and the differences are found to be reasonable. The proposed method can be used during the preliminary design stages of a tall building and can provide a better understanding of the effects of various parameters on the overall structural behavior.

Spatial structure is an appropriate shape that resists external force only with in-plane force by reducing the influence of bending moment, and it maximizes the effectiveness of structural system. With this character of the spatial structure, generally long span is used. As a result, large deflection is accompanied from the general frame. the structure is apt to result in a large deflection even though this structure experiences a small displacement in absence. Usually, nonlinear analysis in numerical analysis means geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity and complex nonlinearity analysis considers both of them. In this study, nonlinear equation of equilibrium considering geometric nonlinearity as per finite element method was applied and also considered the material nonlinearity using the relation of stress-strain in element. It is applied to find unstable result for tracing load-deflection curve in the numerical analysis tech. especially Arc-length method, and result of the analysis was studied by ABAQUS a general purpose of the finite element program. It is found that the present analysis predicts accurate nonlinear behavior of plane and space truss.

Practicing engineers and researchers need computational tools that estimate accurately the cyclic response of RC walls, and in particular, force and deformation capacities and their materials strains. So this paper describes a nonlinear truss modeling approach for reinforced concrete walls, or in general, for plane stress reinforced concrete elements subjected to cyclic reversals. Nonlinear vertical, horizontal, and diagonal truss elements are used to represent concrete and steel reinforcement. The wall having aspect ratio of 1.2 was chosen to be compared with the experimental results. Here, four types of main diagonal member models and three types of diagonal members models were applied to find out more accurate results of analysis.

In this study, Mixed coordination method was selected to optimize the shape of the truss structures which takes multi-loading condition, allowable stress, buckling stress, displacement constraints into consideration. The structure was devided into substructures by Goal coordination method and the substructures were optimized by model coordination method which used two-level technique. Therefore the number of design variables and constrints can be decreased considerable. Under the condition of the same disign, the weight of truss structures can be decreased more considerable by means of optimizing even the shape of truss than by means of optimizing the section of truss while fixing geometrical configuration of it, even though there might be a little difference according to the early geomatrical shape of the truss and the design condition. Thus, the shape optimization of truss structures which utilize the results of this study can be helpful to the economical design of truss structures.
