The basic mechanism of lubrication between the piston ring and the cylinder wall is developed theoretically under the assumption of a reciprocating and dynamically loaded slider-bearing pair of parabolic form and smooth plane. A numerical computation for the prediction in cyclic variations of film thickness, net lubricant flow and frictional behaviour is attempted, and the influenec on the performance characteristics due to the ring height, ring face radius of curvature and the degree of offset, is also examined. The computational procedures develeped for a single ring system are extended and applied further to the complex problem of a ring pack system. It is well known that the ring pressure which is the total load on a ring, can be obtained from either an experimental measurement or a gas flow analysis. In this work, the latter of a gas low analysis method was used to calculate the pressures. It is remarked that the work done was focused on the role of flow continuity and lubricant starvation within the ring pack lubrication.
The determination of three dimensional parameters (e.g., radial speed, angular width, source location) of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) is very important for space weather forecast. To estimate these parameters, several cone models based on a flat cone or a shallow ice-cream cone with spherical front have been suggested. In this study, we investigate which cone model is proper for halo CME morphology using 33 CMEs which are identified as halo CMEs by one spacecraft (SOHO or STEREO-A or B) and as limb CMEs by the other ones. From geometrical parameters of these CMEs such as their front curvature, we find that near full ice-cream cone CMEs (28 events) are dominant over shallow ice-cream cone CMEs (5 events). So we develop a new full ice-cream cone model by assuming that a full ice-cream cone consists of many flat cones with different heights and angular widths. This model is carried out by the following steps: (1) construct a cone for given height and angular width, (2) project the cone onto the sky plane, (3) select points comprising the outer boundary, (4) minimize the difference between the estimated projection points with the observed ones. We apply this model to several halo CMEs and compare the results with those from other methods such as a Graduated Cylindrical Shell model and a geometrical triangulation method.
To design three-mirror telescope system (F/8, 120 inch in focal length) for visible and infra-red band imaging, methods for power configuring and correction of the third order aberrations were studied. In the design of the telescope system, a three-mirror system corrected for spherical aberration, coma, and astigmatism was used for infra-red imaging, and the aberrations were corrected by using conic surfaces. For visible imaging, a singlet corrector lens was appended at the front of the focal plane to correct filed curvature. The telescope system has diffraction limited performance for 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in wavelength within 2.4$^{\circ}$ of field-of-view. In the visible band imaging, the rms spot size of the telescope system is less than 25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ within 3$^{\circ}$ of field-of-view for monochromatic light, and the telescope system satisfies flat field condition for CCD application.
Three-dimensional laser scanner was used to accurately measure any possible strain on a slope under pertaining stress with the time difference of 7 months. The laser scanner has the ability to measure the 3-D coordinate of a target point by calculating the travel time of laser beam between the laser device and the target point, and has been proved to be effective for analysis of the displacement of slopes or large construction. The scanning data measured with time difference were analyzed to find any strain by approaches of plane angle change, curvature variation, twist of frame, displacement of merging point, etc. From the analysis, some weak points showing heavily distorted shape were detected, which was used to design the reinforcement.

In this study, the equivalent physical properties of the shielded slot plate having a lot of very tiny bridge shape structures on its plane were determined by tensile tests and structural analyses. With those results, numerical analyses for the deflection profile by gravity effect were carried out to compare with experimental results. The two results were shown coincident very well so that the estimated equivalent physical properties were verified enough for further studies such as curvature reduction for the shielded slot plate.
This study presented analytical and numerical solutions for spatial free vibration of nonsymmetric thin-walled circular curved beams. The closed-form solutions were obtained for in-plane free vibration analylsis of monosymmetric curved beams. Likewise, two types of thin-walled curved beam elements were developed using the third and the fifth order Hermitian polynomials. In order to illustrate the accuracy and usefulness of the present method, this study presented analytical and numerical solution and compared these with the results using the ABAQUS's shell elements. In particular, effects of the thickness-curvature as well as the inextensional condition were investigated on the free vibration of curved beams with nonsymmetric sections.

The outer surface of an irregular structure contains panels with two-directional curvature called NURBS. To construct these forms of exterior materials, complex geometric surface should be divided into forms and sizes that can be manufactured and constructed. Because the bigger the curvatures of these divided exterior panel, the more expensive the construction costs, these complex two-directional curvatures should go through optimal process of reinterpretation to minimize the curved surfaces with complex two-directional curvatures. Yet, to gain higher ground in technological competition in the field of irregular structure construction, companies do not share know-how that they obtained. Accordingly, small construction and design companies have trouble calculating even rough estimate and cannot adjust expected construction cost based on comparison of design alternatives. Given this situation, this study conducted the research that can support decision-making in the design stage of the construction and provide basic material for optimal range to reduce manufacturing cost by the minimizing the distorted plane of the irregular structure.
Damage detection methods using structural dynamic responses have received much attention in the past decades. For bridge and offshore structures, these methods are usually based on beam models. To ensure the successful application of these methods, it is necessary to examine the sensitivity of modal properties to structural damages. To this end, an analytic solution is presented of the modal properties of simply-supported Euler-Bernoulli beams that contain a general damage with no additional assumptions. The damage can be a reduction in the bending stiffness or a loss of mass within a beam segment. This solution enables us to thoroughly discuss the sensitivities of different modal properties to various damages. It is observed that the lower natural frequencies and mode shapes do not change so much when a section of the beam is damaged, while the mode of rotation angle and curvature modes show abrupt change near the damaged region. Although similar observations have been reported previously, the analytical solution presented herein for clarifying the mechanism involved is considered a contribution to the literature. It is helpful for developing new damage detection methods for structures of the beam type.
This study is concerned with criterion for membrane to shell conversion in two-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis using membrane/shell mixed element. It is well known that in the sheet metal forming some parts of the sheet deform under almost pure stretching (membrane) conditions, whereas other parts in contact with sharp tooling surfaces can develop significant bending strains. The membrane analysis has a short computational time however, in the membrane analysis the bending effects can not be condidered at all. On the other hand, the shell analysis allows the consideration of bending effects, but involves too much computational time. So Onatel),2), Yang et al3),4) developed the membrane/shell mixed element. Onate introduced the energy ratio parameter and Yang et al introduced the ratio of thickness to radius of curvature as the criterion. In the present study we propose a new criterion by using the angle between both side elements in the nodal point.

A three-noded, with three degree-of-freedom at each node, in-plane curved beam element is formulated and employed in eigen-analysis of constant curvature beam. The conventional quadratic shape functions used in a three noded C .deg. type curved beam element produce such an undesirable large stiffness that a significant error is introduced in displacements and stresses. These phenomena are called 'Stiffness Locking Phenomena', which result from spurious strain energy due to inappropriate assumptions on independent isoparametric quadratic interpolation functions. Stiffness locking phenomena can be alleviated by using modified interpolation functions which get rid of spurious constraints of conventional interpolation functions. Eigenvalues and their modes as well as displacements and stresses may be locked because they are related to stiffness. Using modified curved beam element in eigenvalue problem of cantilever and arch, the property and performance of modified curved beam element are examined by numerical experimentations. In these eigen-analyses, mass matrices are calculated by using both modified and unmodified curved beam element, are compared with theoretical solutions. These comparisons show that the performance of the modified curved beam element is better than that of the unmodified curved beam element.
