  • We characterize a flexible self-assembled liquid crystal display (LCD) fabricated from a polyimide (PI) alignment layer with polydimethylsiloxane pixel walls. Ion beam (IB) irradiation aligned LC molecules in the PI layer and bonded two flexible plastic substrates in a one-step assembly of the pixel walls. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy provided chemical and physical evidence for the formation of stable chemical bonds between the PI layer and the PDMS pixel walls in addition to the important maintenance of a uniform 6 um gap between the two substrates without the use of any epoxy resins or other polymers.

  • We demonstrate a pixel-isolated bistable twist-splay namatic (PI-BTSN) liquid crystal (LC) cell which has two stable states of splay and ${\pi}$-twist. Each state is stabilized by a multi-dimensional anchoring effect of pixel-isolating polymer walls without any chiral additives. Polymer walls are formed around the pixel region by anisotropic phase separation between LCs and reactive mesogens. Switching between the two states is archived by using vertical and horizontal electric fields. The memory mode of the fabricated LC cell has shown infinity memory time.

  • We propose new fabrication methods of a pixel-isolated liquid crystal (LC) structure for flexible display applications. In the LC structure fabricated through the proposed method, the patterned interpixel walls for sustaining the cell thickness are supported by the solidified polymer layer through anisotropic phase separation of LC/polymer composite, causing the alignment of the LC molecules to have very good mechanical stability against external pressure. In addition, we show that such pixel-isolating walls can be made by the stamping method which can be applied to fabricate large size plastic LCDs by roll-to-roll processing.

  • A flexible reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display (ChLCD) is fabricated on plastic substrates by using the pixel isolation method. The polymer walls between pixels and the polymer layers in the pixels are formed by two-step UV irradiation. Electro-optical response of the ChLCD with polymer wall and layer is studied and compared with conventional bistable ChLCD cells.

  • In this paper, we report the fabrication of high quality polymer walls by using a monomer containing fluorine (F-monomer). Polymer walls with no phase retardation were fabricated by using photo-polymerization induced anisotropic phase separation of the mixture composed of liquid crystal (LC) and F-monomer. Thanks to the immiscibility of fluoride, we could form high quality polymer walls with no light leakage. We measured electro-optic characteristics of a twisted-nematic (TN) LC cell whose polymer walls were fabricated by using the F-monomer, and the measurements were compared with that fabricated by using the monomer without fluorine.

  • We have characterized the mechanical stability of the Pixel-Isolated Liquid Crystal (PILC) mode for plastic LC display applications. In our device, the LC molecules are fully isolated in the pixels by the phase-separated polymer walls. The experimental results of microscopic observation and electro-optic characterization show that our flexible PILC device has good mechanical stability against external point pressure or bending distortion due to the polymer walls in our structure.

  • Kerr microscopy was assembled to observe magnetic domain image of ultra thin 3 %Si-Fe by using parts of an optical microscope. Digital images were obtained from CCD camera attached to the microscopy. A method was suggested to decide a boundary between magnetic domain regions in this study. The method was using some operations such as subtraction, integration and least mean square approximation for pixel values in the digital image. The method has a strong point that high priced image processor is not needed in the Kerr microscopy system. From the results that three different domain walls were observed and magnetic flux density of 0.085 [T], this method could be applied in the magnetic domain regions having a straight $180^{\circ}$ domain wall.

  • We developed a new device structure using anisotropic phase separation from liquid crystal (LC) and polymer composite materials using UV intensity variation and polymer wetting properties. In the device, the LC molecules are isolated in pixels where LCs are surrounded by the inter-pixel vertical polymer walls and the horizontal polymer films on the upper substrate. These devices show very good mechanical stability against external pressure. The electro-optic characteristics and the mechanical stability of the devices are discussed in view of the flexible display applications.

  • A pixel isolation wall of liquid crystal display is fabricated by the anisotropic photoreaction of a cinnamate based prepolymer. The various oligomers containing a cinnamate moiety were synthesized and used for the formation of the pixel isolation wall. The anisotropic photoreaction of cinnamate moiety was closely related with the liquid crystal orientation at the polymer wall boundary.

  • We investigated the effect of Xe content variation on the luminous efficiency of two different sub-pixel types, i.e., segmented electrode in delta color arrayed enclosed sub-pixel (SDE) and conventional stripe barrier type, in an ac plasma display panel through three-dimensional numerical simulations. The conventional cell type was found to have higher VUV generation efficiency as compared with that of SDE structure, but as the Xe content increased, the SDE type showed higher improvements in efficiency due to the lower plasma loss to the barrier walls.
