In this paper we proposed multi-directional matching windows combined by multi-dimensional feature vector matching, which uses not only intensity values but also multiple feature values, such as variance, first and second derivative of pixels. Multi-dimensional feature vector matching has the advantage of compensating the drawbacks of area-based stereo matching using one feature value, such as intensity. We define matching cost of a pixel by the minimum value among eight multi-dimensional feature vector distances of the pixels expanded in eight directions having the interval of 45 degrees. As best stereo matches, we determine the two points with the minimum matching cost within the disparity range. In the experiment we used aerial imagery and IKONOS satellite imagery and obtained more accurate matching results than that of conventional matching method.

This paper proposed the method to improve performance of a pixel, which has low accuracy, by applying image segmentation methods based on color and multi-threshold of brightness. Stereo matching is the process to find the corresponding point on the right image with the point on the left image. For this process, distance(depth) information in stereo images is calculated. However, in the case of a region which has textureless, stereo matching has low accuracy and bad pixels occur on the disparity map. In the proposed method, the relationship between adjacent pixels is considered for compensating bad pixels. Generally, the object has similar color and brightness. Therefore, by considering the relationship between regions based on segmented regions by means of color and multi-threshold of brightness respectively, the region which is considered as parts of same object is re-segmented. According to relationship information of segmented sets of pixels, bad pixels in the disparity map are compensated efficiently. By applying the proposed method, the results show a decrease of nearly 28% in the number of bad pixels of the image applied the method which is established.

Quantization error, generated by the quantization process of an image, is inherent in computer vision. Because, especially in stereo vision, the quantization error in a 2-D image results in position errors in the reconstructed 3-D scene, it is necessary to analyze it mathematically. In this paper, the analysis of the probability density function (pdf) of quantization error for a line-based stereo matching scheme is presented. We show that the theoretical pdf of quantization error in the reconstructed 3-D position information has more general form than the conventional analysis for pixel-based stereo matching schemes. Computer simulation is observed to surpport the theoretical distribution.

A new method is proposed for stereo vision where solution to disparity map is presented in terms of Line constraint and Reliability space -- the first constraint proposes a progressive framework for stereo matching which applies local area pixel-values from corresponding lines in the left and right image pairs. The second states that reliability space based on corresponding points records the disparity and then we are able to apply the median filter in order to reduce the noises which occur in the process. A coarse to fine result is presented after the median filtering, which improves the final result qualitatively. Experiment is evaluated by rectified stereo matching images pairs from Middlebury datasets and has proved that those two adopted strategies yield good matching quantitative results in terms of fast running speed.

A stereo matching method is one of the ways to obtain a depth value from two dimensional images. This method estimates the depth value of target images using stereo images which have two different viewpoints. In the result of stereo matching, the depth value is represented by a disparity value. The disparity means a distance difference between a current pixel in one side of stereo images and its corresponding point in the other side of stereo images. The stereo matching in a homogeneous region is always difficult to find corresponding points because there are no textures in that region. In this paper, we propose a novel matching equation using the distance transform to estimate accurate disparity values in the homogeneous region. The distance transform calculates pixel distances from the edge region. For this reason, pixels in the homogeneous region have specific values when we apply this transform to pixels in that region. Therefore, the stereo matching method using the distance transform improves the matching accuracy in the homogeneous regions. In addition, we also propose an adaptive matching cost computation using a kernel of one dimensional array depending on the characteristic of regions in the image. In order to aggregate the matching cost, we apply a cross-scale cost aggregation method to our proposed method. As a result, the proposed method has a lower average error rate than that of the conventional method in all regions.
In this paper, we propose a fast variable block matching algorithm for motion estimation based on bit-patterns. Motion estimation in the proposed algorithm is peformed after the representation of image sequence is transformed 8-bit pixel values into 1-bit ones by the mean pixel value of search block, which brings a short searching time by reducing the computational complexity. Moreover, adaptive searching methods according to the motion information of the block make the procedure of motion estimation efficient by eliminating unnecessary searching processes of low motion block and deepening a searching procedure in high motion block. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides bettor performance - average 0.5dB PSNR improvement and about 99% savings in the number of operations - than full search Hock matching algorithm with a fixed block size.

In this paper an effective block matching algorithm is proposed to find the motion vector. There are two approaches to the estimation of the motion vector in MCC (motion compensated coding), i.e., pel(pixel element) recursive algorithm and block matching algorithm. The search algorithm in this paper is based on the block matching method. The advantage of a proposed algorithm using integral projections is the reduction of the computation time. While the conventional block matching methods have to be computed in 2-dimensional arrays, the proposed algorithm using integral projections can be computed in 1-dimensional arrays. In comparison with conventional block matching methods, a computer simulation shows that though the prediction error increases 0.23 db, it is not detectable for human eyes and the average reduction ratio of computation time obtained from the proposed algorithm is about 3-4.
Feature based stereo matching is an effective way to perform 3D building reconstruction. However, in urban scene, the cluttered background and various building structures may interfere with the performance of building reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a novel method to robustly reconstruct buildings on the basis of rectangle regions. Firstly, we propose a multi-scale linear feature detector to obtain the salient line segments on the object contours. Secondly, candidate rectangle regions are extracted from the salient line segments based on their local information. Thirdly, stereo matching is performed with the list of matching line segments, which are boundary edges of the corresponding rectangles from the left and right image. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better accuracy on the reconstructed result than pixel-level stereo matching.
This paper introduces a new fast motion estimation based on estimating a block matching error (i.e., sum of absolute difference (SAD)) between blocks which can eliminate an impossible candidate block much earlier than a conventional partial distortion elimination (PDE) scheme. The basic idea of the proposed scheme is based on predicting the total SAD of a candidate block using its partial SAD. In particular, in order to improve prediction accuracy and computational efficiency, a sub-sample based block matching and a selective pixel-based approaches are employed. In order to evaluate the proposed scheme, several baseline approaches are described and compared. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the computations by about 44% for motion estimation at the cost of 0.0005 dB quality degradation versus the general PDE algorithm.

This paper proposes an efficient method for 3D modeling of a human face from trinocular images by reconstructing face surface using range data. By using a trinocular camera system, we mitigated the tradeoff between the occlusion problem and the range resolution limitation which is the critical limitation in binocular camera system. We also propose an MPC_MBS (Matching Pixel Count Multiple Baseline Stereo) area-based matching method to reduce boundary overreach phenomenon and to improve both of accuracy and precision in matching. In this method, the computing time can be reduced significantly by removing the redundancies. In the model generation sub-pixel accurate surface data are achieved by 2D interpolation of disparity values, and are sampled to make regular triangular meshes. The data size of the triangular mesh model can be controlled by merging the vertices that lie on the same plane within user defined error threshold.
