  • The tension of warp from trawler and sea-floor contact can generate tilt and wake turbulence around otter boards. Preliminary measurements of otter board tilt and 3-D flow velocity during bottom trawl operations were taken using a vector instrument to investigate the effects of wake turbulence at the trailing edge of the otter board. Tilt data (i.e., yaw, pitch, and roll) at 1 Hz and flow data (velocities in the towing, lateral, and vertical directions) at 16 Hz were analyzed to determine their periods and amplitudes using global wavelet and peak event analyses. The mean period (${\pm}standard$ deviation) of the tilt from the peak event analysis ($5{\pm}2s$) was longer or double than that of flow velocity ($3{\pm}2s$). The two periods also had a significant linear relationship. The turbulence rate of flow was 30-50% at the trailing edge and was closely related to roll deviation. The frequency of phase difference ratios (i.e., peak time differences between tilts and flow periods) was significantly different from random occurrence in two trials, possibly due to side tidal effects. However, in the other trials, flow peaks were random, as shown by the even peak times between tilts and flows. Future studies should focus on reducing tilt variation, wake turbulence, and bottom contact to stabilize otter board motion.

  • A noise reduction technique to reduce background noise in corrupted voice is proposed. The proposed method is based on linear prediction and takes advantages of periodicity of voiced speech. A voiced sound is regarded as a periodic stationary signal in short time interval. Therefore, the current voice signal is correlated with the voice signal delayed by a pitch period. A linear predictor can estimate only the current signal correlated with the delayed signal. Therefore, the enhanced voice can be obtained as output of the linear predictor. Simulation results show that the proposed method is able to reduce the background noise.

  • On CELP type Vocoders G.723.1 6.3kbps/5.3kbps Dual Rate Speech Codec, which is developed for Internet Phone and videoconferencing, uses VAD(Voice Activity Detection)/CNG (Comfort Noise Generator) in order to reduce the bit rate in a silence period. In order to reduce the bit rate effectively in this paper, we first set the boundary condition of the energy threshold to prevent the consumption of unnecessary processing time, and use three decision rules to detect an active frame by energy, pitch gain and LSP distance. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm we use silence-inserted speech data with 0, 5, 10, 20dB of SNR. As a result when SNR is over 5dB, the bit rate is reduced up to about 40% without speech degradation and the processing time is additionally decreased.

  • In this paper, a transcoding algorithm for the Selectable Mode Vocoder (SMV) and the G.723.1 speech coder via direct parameter transformation is proposed. In contrast to the conventional tandem transcoding algorithm, the proposed algorithm converts the parameters of one coder to the Other Without going through the decoding md encoding process. The proposed algorithm is composed of four parts: the parameter decoding, line spectral pair (LSP) conversion, pitch period conversion, excitation conversion and rate selection. The evaluation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves equivalent speech quality to that of tandem transcoding with reduced computational complexity and delay.

  • Train dynamics affects significantly safe and efficient operation of a train, especially during traction or braking period. Train dynamics is intrinsically complex due to many DOF motions in a three-dimensional space, and its behavior during the braking stage is too complex to understand and design an effective braking logic of the train. In this paper, we present a two-dimensional model with three DOF motion in a longitudinal, vertical, and pitch direction for the Hanvit 200 tilting train, which is efficient to analyze a braking performance. Furthermore, we analyze the braking logic and simulate the braking process of the Hanvit 200 tilting train using Simulink.

  • This study addresses the control problem of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during the transition period when the flying mode changes from hovering to translational motion in the horizontal plane. First, we introduce a compensation algorithm that improves height stabilization and reduces altitude drop. The main principle is to incorporate pitch and roll measurements into the feedforward term of the altitude controller to provide a larger thrust force. To further improve altitude control, we propose the fuzzy logic controller that improves system behavior. Simulation results presented in the paper highlight the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.

  • Mutation consisted of abrupt and uncontrolled rises and falls in vocal pitch due to poor coordination of the laryngeal musculature associated with general bodily growth. The male voice drops about 10 semitones after mutation period but the female voice drops about 2 semitones. Symptoms of abnormal voice mutation are many variations in the voice. Sometimes the voice is a true falsetto, high and thin. The au thor experienced two male cases of prolonged mutation difficulty treated by pressure method. The result were excellent with simple maneuver. The author reported the result of treatment for two cases and reviewed the literatures.
