  • This study investigated the perception of emotional voices by transplanting some or all of the prosodic aspects, i.e. pitch, duration, and intensity, of the utterances produced with emotional voices onto those with normal voices and vice versa. Listening evaluation by 24 raters revealed that prosodic effect was greater than segmental & vocal quality effect on the preception of the emotion. The degree of influence of prosody and that of segments & vocal quality varied according to the type of emotion. As for fear, prosodic elements had far greater influence than segmental & vocal quality elements whereas segmental and vocal elements had as much effect as prosody on the perception of happy voices. Different amount of contribution to the perception of emotion was found among prosodic features with the descending order of pitch, duration and intensity. As for the length of the utterances, the perception of emotion was more effective with long utterances than with short utterances.

  • It is known that the heat and mass transfer characteristics in the absorber are most sensitive of the temperature boost of all the heat exchangers and the development of a more efficient absorber should be highly important. This paper describes absorption experiments made with different inside tube diameters, tube length and tube shapes. The purpose of this study is to acquire basic knowledge about heat and mass transfer in a falling film type absorber with vertical inner tubes. Heat and mass transfer were measured for water vapor absorption into a Lithium Bromide-water solution flowing down an absorber of vertical inner tubes. As a result, insert spring tube compares bare tube and heat transfer improved by order of insert spring tube P2(pitch 20 mm) and P1(pitch 10 mm).

  • This paper deals with the effect of teeth number variation in permanent Magnet DC motor. As teeth number varies, both flux density distribution and winding pitch are influenced, which is closely related to torque-speed characteristics, output power, and efficiency. In this study, motor design carried out using finite element method, and prototype motors were manufactured to test their performance analysis. In spite of torque ripple due to cogging effect better characteristic of machine using small teeth number was recorded than the motors with large number of rotor teeth. One of that reasons is caused by adopting large coil-length due to large number of teeth, i. e. large coil-pitch.

  • Over tightening experiments of the tension-controlled bolts are carried out and the stripping mechanism is reviewed base on the observed results. There are two modes of bolt failure due to the over tightening : one the fracture of the bolt the other the thread stripping Bifurcation between these two modes is rather delicate but it seems being related with the elastic flexibility of the bolt which depends upon the unused thread length. The fracture mode occurs in the bolts with good flexibility while the latter with bad one. According to the ISO Standard some meter coarse threads like M20 and M22 have the same pitch which causes bigger fastener to less resistance in shear and bending compared with the smaller one. however since UNC thread system adapts different pitch for different nominal diameter unified coarse threads show better stripping resistance than their corresponding meter threads.

  • In order to classify the mechanical phenomena of thermal elasto-plastic behavior on the multi-spot welded joints, this study has tried to carry out three-dimensional thermal elasto-plastic analysis on them. However, because the shape of multi-spot welded joints is not taxi-symmetric, unlike the cafe of single-spot welded joint, the solution domain for simulation should be three dimension. Therefore, in this paper, firstly, the three-dimensional thermal elasto-plastic program is developed by an iso-parametric finite element method. Secondly, from the results analyzed by developed program, this has clarified mechanical characteristics and their production mechanism on single and multi-spot waled joints. Moreover, it has been intended to make clear effects of pitch length on welding residual stresses, plastic strain of multi-spot welded joints.

  • The microbolometer array sensor with fine pitch pixel array has been implemented to the released amorphous silicon layer supported by two contact pads. For the design of focal plane mirror with geometrical flatness, the simple beam test structures were fabricated and characterized. As the beam length decreased, the effect of beam width on the bending was minimized, Mirror deformation of focal plane in a real pixel showed downward curvature by residual stress of a-Si and Ti layer. The mirror tilting was caused by the mis-align effect of contact pad and confirmed by FEA simulation results. The properties of bolometer have been measured as such that the NETD 145 mK, the TCR -2 %/K, and thermal time constant 1.99 ms.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a necessity for reliable and efficient functioning of engineering systems. Damage detection (DD) is a crucial component of any SHM system. Lamb waves are a popular means to DD owing to their sensitivity to small damages over a substantial length. This typically involves an active sensing paradigm in a pitch-catch setting, that involves two piezo-sensors, a transmitter and a receiver. In this paper, we propose a data-intensive DD approach for beam structures using high frequency signals acquired from beams in a pitch-catch setting. The key idea is to develop a statistical learning-based approach, that harnesses the inherent sparsity in the problem. The proposed approach performs damage detection, localization in beams. In addition, quantification is possible too with prior calibration. We demonstrate numerically that the proposed approach achieves 100% accuracy in detection and localization even with a signal to noise ratio of 25 dB.

  • Human beings can perceive various aspects of sound including loudness, pitch, length, and timber. Recently many studies were conducted to clarify complex auditory scales of the human ear. This study critically reviews some of these scales (decibel, sone, phon for loudness perception; mel and bark for pitch) and proposes to apply the scales to normalize acoustic correlates of human speech. One of the most important aspects of human auditory perception is the nonlinearity which should be incorporated into the linear speech analysis and synthesis system. Further studies using more sophisticated equipment are desirable to refine these scales, through the analysis of human auditory perception of complex tones or speech. This will lead scientists to develop better speech recognition and synthesis devices.

  • In this paper, a method to segment each character and extract figure from Korean documents is proposed. At first, each character string is extracted by means of iterative horizontal propagation, shrink algorithm and run-length algorithm. Individual character region is extracted by iterative horizontal and vertical manipulation. Next, characters of right pitch are searched. Each character is segmented by the position information. Overlapped character is segmented on the ground of the width of already extracted character. The rest are extracted as special characters of half pitch. Using 9 data input in the form of 840 X 600 from Korean monthly magazine, experiment was simulated. Extraction rate of character is 100%, and that of individual character is 98%. Judging from these results, efficiency on extracting character region and segmenting individual character is proved.

  • Despite the simplicity of processing, conventional autocorrelation function (ACF) method for the precise determination of fetal heart rate (FHR) has many problems. In the case of weak or noise corrupted Doppler ultrasound singnals, the ACF method is very sensitive to the threshold level and data window length. It is real troublesome to extract FHR when there is a data loss. To overcome these problems, the high resolution pitch detection algorithm is adapted to estimate the FHR. The FHR is determined from the correlation of two interconnected segments by its maximum correlation value. FHR is compensated with a constant correlation threshold in a greatly smeared noise signal. This method yields more accurate, robust and reliable than the ACF method.
