  • This paper presents the improved procedure to assess static and dynamic strength of crawler type excavators. A fully integrated model including front attachment and chassis was prepared for structural analysis. In this paper, two types of loading input methods were investigated and the method imposing digging force directly on bucket tooth was more convenient than imposing cylinder reaction force on cylinder pin even if the two methods showed no discrepancy in analysis results. Static strength analysis was carried out for eight analysis scenarios based on two extreme digging positions, maximum digging reach position and maximum digging force positions. The results from static strength analysis were compared with measured stresses, cylinder pressures and digging forces and showed a good quantitative agreement with measured data. Dynamic strength analysis was carried out for simple reciprocation of boom cylinders. It was recognized that the effect of compressive stiffness of hydraulic oil was very important for dynamic structural behavior. The results from dynamic strength analysis including hydraulic oil stiffness were also compared with measured acceleration data and showed a qualitative agreement with measured data.

  • The axisymmetric bodies considered in this study have hemispherical and ellipsoidal noses. The near-field pressure fluctuations over each nose model at $Re_D=2.43{\times}10^5$ were investigated in the laminar separation region and developing turbulent boundary layers using a 1/8' pin-holed microphone sensor. The wall pressure fluctuations were also measured in an axisymmetric boundary layer on a cylinder parallel to mean flow at a momentum thickness Reynolds number of 850 and a boundary layer thickness to cylinder radius ratio of 1.88.

  • The optimal shape modeling of core parts through 3D modeling and structural analysis for the development of small and medium-sized ships. The goal is to improve the efficient structure of the hydraulic system for controlling the rudder among the core steering parts in small and medium-sized ships. Through 3D modeling and structural analysis, a new concept of tiller parts and a double-acting hydraulic cylinder control system were proposed and operational structural stability was evaluated. Structural analysis of the three different tiller designs that can be replaceable onto existing fishing vessels was conducted to derive the final shapes. The emphasis was placed on evaluating the structural stability of the key drive components, the tiller, pin, and cylinder rodin the maximum torque condition of the hydraulic cylinder.

  • Factors to cause accidents were investigated through a systematic analysis of leakage accidents in welded LP-gas cylinder between 199 and 1999. As a result It was showed that most of leakage accident occurred at the pin-hole due to the localized corrosion on welded zone in cylinder. Accordingly, in this paper, we suggested that the problems of heat treatment condition in two-piece welded cylinder and substitute proposal for preventing the tearing of T zone in three-piece welded cylinder. Furthermore, corrosion rate on the weldment and base metal of welded LP-gas cylinder was evaluated using the electrochemical tests in acid rain and $3.5\%NaCl$ solution, Also, the poor adhesion and defects of film which was produced by electrostatic powder spray painting, while the LP-gas cylinder was manufactured, were analyzed using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy). And we proposed a optimum coating thickness of the cylinder.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis for the piston secondary dynamics of small refrigeration reciprocating compressors is performed. In general, the length of cylinder in this class of compressors is shortened to diminish the frictional losses of the piston-cylinder system. So, the contacting length between piston and cylinder wall is in variable with the rotating crank angle around the BDC of the reciprocating piston. In the problem formulation of the piston dynamics, the change in bearing length of the piston and all corresponding forces and moments are considered in order to determine the piston trajectory, velocity and acceleration at each step. A Newton-Raphson procedure was employed in solving the secondary dynamic equations of the piston. The developed computer program can be used to calculate the entire piston trajectory and the hydrodynamic force and moment as functions of crank angle under compressor running conditions. The results explored the effects of the radial clearance, lubricant viscosity, length of the cylinder wall, and pin location on the stability of the piston.

  • This study performed stress and fatigue life analysis of the damping hinge of a built-in side-by-side refrigerator that occurs when the door is opened to the maximum angle. An analysis of the initial design showed that stress concentration occurred at the corner between the cylinder and upper disk of the bracket pin, and the maximum stress exceeded the yield strength. The maximum stress location and the calculated fatigue life were consistent with the door opening-and-closing endurance test results for a prototype. Three cases of design improvement for the bracket pin were derived with the aim of reducing the stress concentration that appeared in the initial design. An analysis of the cases showed that inserting a fillet between the disk and the cylinder of the bracket pin reduced the stress and increased the fatigue life. Moreover, changing the disk into two steps was more favorable. In conclusion, the best design improvement was the case that the disk was changed to two steps and the fillet with a large radius was inserted. In that case, the stress was the smallest and the fatigue life was infinite.

  • An overload limiter is used to prevent its overturning accident during an operation of a movable crane. Recently the indirect measuring method, which measures hoisting load and overturning moment of overload limiter, demands instead of the existing method, which measures only hoisting load. The indirectly measuring method is how to conduct the hoisting load and overturning moment as measuring the load of hydraulic cylinder for a luffing driving of boom. So we need to develop the multi-angular pin type load cell with the measuring angle of ${\pm}10$ degree instead of the existing load cell with the measuring angle of ${\pm}2$ degree. In this study the finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate the effect of the aspect ratio of measuring cross section on the measuring limit of the load cell to develop the many-angular pin type load cell. For this investigation, the aspect ratio of measuring cross section and load applying angle were adopted as design parameters and the stresses of measuring part were evaluated for each parameter.

  • A 150 m$\^$3//hr, 30 kg/cm$\^$2/, air-cooled 3-stage reciprocating air compressor is designed to be used in starting large diesel engines of ships. A basic design procedure is presented to meet the targeted pressure and flow rate, and especially a volumetric efficiency of 80%. Temperature and stress analysis of the 1st stage cylinder are performed using axisymmetric FEM modelings. The dynamics of valve system is analyzed and stress at the 1st stage valve seat caused by valve impact is evaluated. To reduce friction loss and wear at the compressor engine system tribological design issues are reviewed and good design practices are suggested. Finally, forced-air pin-type interstage coolers are designed to dissipate generated compression heat at each stage.

  • Flow over a sphere under forced oscillation at Re=300 is simulated for various frequency ratios which are defined as excitation frequency over natural frequency of stationary sphere. The results of oscillating sphere are compared with those of stationary sphere and an oscillating cylinder. Detailed vortical structures, hydrodynamic forces and frequencies of the wake are prescribed as a function of frequency ratio. For oscillating sphere, planar symmetry of the wake is kept and two nearly symmetric hair pin vortices are induced by oscillation for one period of oscillation when the frequency ratio is bigger than 0.5. Modulation phenomenon which can be found in an oscillating cylinder were not seen for an oscillating sphere.

  • Clearance movements of engine piston are very related to the piston impact to the engine block as well as many tribological problems. Some of the major parameters that influence these kinds of performances are piston profiles, piston offsets and clearance magnitudes. In our study, computational investigation is performed about the piston movements in the clearance between piston and cylinder liner by changing the skirt profiles and piston offsets. Our results show that curved profile and more offset magnitude to thrust side have better performance that has low side impact during the engine cycle.
