  • We present a frame synchronization algorithm for lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) coded burst transmissions, which combines a conventional pilots-assisted frame synchronization algorithm and a code-aided algorithm based on the mean magnitude of the soft outputs from the LDPC decoder. With moderate computational complexity, the proposed algorithm is more efficient in bandwidth than conventional pilots-assisted algorithms. When compared with other code-aided algorithms, the proposed algorithm offers a better trade-off between complexity and performance. Simulation results in the case of an 8-PSK system with (1944, 972) LDPC code show that the proposed algorithm can achieve a performance equivalent to that of the perfect frame synchronization, with a bandwidth efficiency loss of 0.06 dB due to the use of pilot symbols.

  • The Haptic Exploration Laboratory at The Johns Hopkins University is currently exploring many problems related to haptics (force and tactile information) in human-machine systems. We divide our work into two main areas: virtual environments and robot-assisted manipulation systems. Our interest in virtual environments focuses on reality-based modeling, in which measurements of the static and dynamic properties of actual objects are taken in order to produce realistic virtual environments. Thus, we must develop methods for acquiring data from real objects and populating pre-defined models. We also seek to create systems that can provide active manipulation assistance to the operator through haptic, visual, and audio cues. These systems may be teleoperated systems, which allow human users to operate in environments that would normally be inaccessible due to hazards, distance, or scale. Alternatively, cooperative manipulation systems allow a user and a robot to share a tool, allowing the user to guide or override the robot directly if necessary. Haptics in human-machine systems can have many applications, such as undersea and space operations, training for pilots and surgeons, and manufacturing. We focus much of our work on medical applications.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to improve performance of pilot symbol assisted modulation(PSAM) channel estimation method for OFDM systems over frequency selective channel. When channel values are estimated, the low pilot density used for channel estimation increases not only the effective data rate but also power efficiency. Thus, the lower pilot density which is used for channel estimation is better for OFDM system. At first, we estimate the channel values which are located at the middle of adjacent pilots, and then all of the possible channel values are estiamted by using original pilot values and previously estimated pilot values. Furthermore, the error of estimated channel values is reduced by introducing guard interval which is designed acccording to maximum channel delay. Performance achieved with the proposed method is illustrated by simulation experiments in comparison with the existing methods in terms of mean squared error(MSE).

  • The pilot assisted channel frequency response (CFR) estimation schemes for an OFDM-based system with virtual subcarriers are analyzed under the assumption that pilot symbols are located according to a comb-type pattern in the OFDM block. In particular, as the minimum mean square error (MMSE) based scheme aiming to directly predict the channel impulse response and the MMSE based scheme aiming to suppress the leakage have not been clearly compared, by proving that the mean square errors (MSEs) of the latter scheme is always larger than that of the former scheme, this paper shows that the former scheme is superior to the latter scheme. Moreover, the impact of the number of pilots on the performances of the MMSE and least-square based channel estimation schemes are investigated. The performance analyses of the presented schemes are confirmed by computer simulation.
