Evaluation of Pile Bearing Capacity and Scale Effect Using Model Pile Test (모형실험을 통한 말뚝지지력의 평가 및 치수효과의 비교분석)

  • Model pile tests in calibration chamber are performed in order to study the two factors that the pile bearing capacity is significantly influenced by. Those factors are the critical depth concept and the scale effect caused by pile diameters. Firstly, the predicted values of end bearing capacity from the various static formulae were compared with the measured ones from model pile tests. Secondly, the critical depth concept and the scale effect were investigated by using two different soil conditions in a series of calibration chamber tests : the one is uniform sand : and the other is weathered granites overlayered by sand. Main results obtained from the model tests can be summarized as follows : (1) The end bearing capacity was increased with pile penetration depth up to penetration ratio of 7 to 8 when the cell pressure is high, and the critical depth was observed in the current chamber tests with uniform sand layer , (2) The predicted end bearing capacities were mostly lager than the measured, and it was found that the differences between the predicted and the measured values became smaller as the pile penetration ratio was increased : (3) The end bearing capacity of the small diameter pile in weathered granites layer was mostly less than that of the larger pile, while in uniform sand layer it was vice.

Carrying Capacity Behavior of Instrumented PC Piles (시험 콘크리트 말뚝의 지지력 거동)

  • To study the carrying capacity behavior of pile, dynamic pile testis and static load tests were carried out on two instrumented piles during and some time after pile driving. Cone Penetration Test( CPT) and Standard Penetration Test(SPT) were also performed at the test site before pile tests to investigate the relationship between unit skin friction of piles and cone tip resistance values and SPT N values. Total static capacity of pile reached the ultimate stage at the pile head settlement of about 0.055D (D : Pile diameter), at which skin friction of Pile already Passed the maximum value, but the end bearing was still increasing with the pile head settlement. The carrying capacity of pile increased in the form of natural logarithmic function with the time after pile driving. The increase in skin friction with time was very substantial the increase in skin friction 40 days after pile driving was 4.6 times of that determined during pile driving. The contribution of skin friction to the total capacity twas insignificant in the beginning, but became substantial 40 days after pile driving. This implies that the tested pile initially responded as an end bearing pile and later behaved as a friction pile. It was also noted that unit skin friction of pile might be ielated to cone tip resistance values(q.) and SPT N values, though the coefficient of this relationship might differ from one soil group to another and was somewhat greater than the value used in the design practice of Korea.

Development of Steel Pipe Attached PHC Piles for Increasing Base Load Capacity of Bored Pre-cast Piles (매입말뚝의 선단지지력 증대를 위한 강관 부착 PHC파일 개발)

  • Bored pre-cast piles using PHC piles is widely used in foundation of building structures constructed in urban areas because noise and vibration due to pile installation are low. However, since slime is formed at the base of borehole and the density of bearing stratum surrounding the base of borehole is decreased due to stress relaxation in drilling process of bored pre-cast pile method, the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles is very low compared to the strength of bearing stratum. In this study, a new type of PHC pile, which short steel pipe with the same diameter as the PHC pile is attached to the pile tip, is developed to increase the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles. In order to check the effect of the use of new PHC pile on the base load capacity of bored pre-cast piles, field pile load tests are performed for bored pre-cast piles using the new and existing PHC piles. Results of the pile load tests show that the new PHC pile gives higher base load capacity to bored pre-cast piles than the existing PHC pile, since the tip of new PHC pile is penetrated to undisturbed bearing stratum passing through the slime at the base of borehole and the loosened bearing stratum under the slime by pile driving using light hammer.

Bearing Capacity Characteristics of Drilled Shafts using Percussion Rotary Drilling (PRD 공법을 이용한 매입말뚝의 지지력 특성)

  • The bearing capacity of drilled shafts that take excavation by Percussion Rrotary Drilling(PRD) into consideration was evaluated using static and dynamic pile load tests. The emphasis was on quantifying the allowable bearing capacity and point load-transfer at the pile tip on seven instrumented steel piles. Of the seven instrumented piles, five piles are placed to the bottom of the excavation by rotary and pushing into the final depth of the excavation, as opposed to the two driven piles. Based on the results obtained, it is shown that the skin friction mobilized by PRD is much greater than point resistance, whereas in driven piles, the point resistance is greater than skin friction. It is also found that much greater pile capacity was proved in the case of drilled shafts, compared to the driven piles and thus, the excavation by rotary drilling gives reliable pile capacity required to design axially loaded piles.

  • Several centrifuge modelling tests were performed to compare sand compaction pile (SCP) with gravel compaction pile (GCP) at the point of bearing capacity. SCP and GCP were installed as 30, 40, 50, 60, 70% of replacement ratio in cylindrical model tank (diameter = 20 cm, height = 40 cm), and the loading tests were carried out to analyze the bearing characteristics of soft clay ground reinforced by SCP and GCP. As a result of loading tests, the bearing capacities of soft grounds reinforced by SCP and GCP increase with increasing replacement ratio of pile, and a GCP reinforced ground has larger bearing capacity than that of a SCP reinforced ground. Several proposed bearing capacity equations for ground reinforced by SCP or GCP were compared with loading test results.

  • To analyse the end bearing capacity of a single pile in cohesionless soils, the mode of deformation due to a pile penetration has been intestigated through model pile penetration tests using acetone hardening and resin impregnation technique. A new mode of deformation has been assumed from the experimental results and a new solution compeying with the theory of spherical cal.its expansion has been proposed. The end bearing capacity according to the proposed solution is expressed as the product of the limit spherical cavity expansion pressure multiplied by a col.relation factor. The results has been compared with other solutions based on the theory of cavity expansion. From the comparison, the proposed solution is expected to provide a way to solve the problem of pile bearing capacity prediction based on the theory of cavity expansion which often has been criticized as giving higher value of pile bearing capacity than the actual value.

  • In the present study, more systematic laboratory model tests under various conditions are carried out to investigate load-sharing characteristics among the granular pile and adjacent soils and bearing capacity characteristics with different pile lengths. Further to evaluate effects of both a loading area and a spacing of pile installation on the bearing capacity and bearing capacity characteristics of each pile in group, model test results are also analyzed for the purpose of an efficient design of granular compaction piles. From the analysis of the model test results, it is found that the ultimate capacity of granular compaction group piles increases with a decrease in the installation distance among granular piles. It is also found that the dominant failure mode of the granular compaction piles is bulging failure. It is further realized that the length of a granular pile could not significantly affect on the ultimate granular pile capacity.

  • A series of centrifuge model tests to investigate the suction pile pullout loading capacity in sand have been performed. The main parameters that affect the pullout loading capacity of a suction pile include the mooring line inclination angle and the padeye position of the suction pile. With respect to the padeye position, the maximum pullout loading capacity is obtained when the padeye position is near 75% of the pile length from the top. The direction of the pile rotation changes when the padeye position reaches somewhere near 50~75% for all mooring line inclination angles. The translation displacement of suction pile to develop the time of maximum pullout loading capacity decreased as the mooring line inclination angle increased. In addition, the vertical displacements of the center of a suction piles for all cases appeared to develop toward the ground surface.

A Study on the Allowable Bearing Capacity of Pile by Driving Formulas (각종 항타공식에 의한 말뚝의 허용지지력 연구)

  • The estimation of pile bearing capacity is important since the design details are determined from the result. There are numerous ways of determining the pile design load, but only few of them are chosen in the actual design. According to the recent investigation in Korea, the formulas proposed by Meyerhof based on the SPT N values are most frequently chosen in the design stage. In the study, various static and dynamic formulas have been used in predicting the allowable bearing capacity of a pile. Further, the reliability of these formulas has been verified by comparing the perdicted values with the static and dynamic load test measurements. Also in cases, these methods of pile bearing capacity determination do not take the time effect consideration, the actual allowable load as determined from pile load test indicates severe deviation from the design value. The principle results of this study are summarized as follows : A a result of estimate the reliability in criterion of the Davisson method, in was showed that Terzaghi & Peck > Chin > Meyerhof > Modified Meyerhof method was the most reliable method for the prediction of bearing capacity. Comparisons of the various pile-driving formulas showed that Modified Engineering News was the most reliable method. However, a significant error happened between dynamic bearing capacity equation was judged that uncertainty of hammer efficiency, characteristics of variable , time effect etc... was not considered. As a result of considering time effect increased skin friction capacity higher than end bearing capacity. It was found out that it would be possible to increase the skin friction capacity 1.99 times higher than a driving. As a result of considering 7 day's time effect, it was obtained that Engineering News. Modified Engineering News. Bearing Capacity and Control Method of Driven Piles (기성말뚝의 지지력 거동해석과 시공관리방안)

  • Dynamic load and static load tests are performed on steel pipe piles and concrete piles at five construction sites in highway to compare the difference of load bearing mechanisms. At each site, one steel pile is instrumented with electric strain gages and dynamic tests are performed on the pile during installation. Damages of strain gages due to the installation are checked and static test is performed upon the same pile after two or seven days as well. It shows that load transfer from side friction to base resistance behaves somewhat differently according to the results of load-settlement analysis obtained from PDA and static load test. Initial elastic stage of load settlement curves of two load tests is almost similar. But after the yielding point, dynamic resistance of pile behaves more stiffer than static resistance, thus, dynamic load test result might overestimate the real pile capacity compared with static result. Analysis of gage readings shows that unit skin friction increases exponentially with depth. The skin friction is mobilized at the 1∼2m above the pile tip and contributes to the considerable side resistance. Comparison of side and base resistances between the measured value and the calculated value by Meyerhof's bearing capacity equation using SPT N value shows that the calculated base resistance is higher than the measured. Therefore, contribution of side resistance to total capacity shouldn't be ignored or underestimated. Finally, based upon the overall test results, a construction control procedure is suggested.
