  • The objective of this study is to fabricate a piezoelectric composite consisting of a piezoelectric ceramic and a high toughness material and to evaluate their electromechanical properties for high force actuator applications. The mixture of the piezoelectric material, PMNZT, and high toughness material, $ZrO_2$, exhibited high piezoelectric properties as well as good mechanical fracture resistance. Up to 2 vol% of $ZrO_2$ in PMNZT matrix, piezoelectric $d_{33}$ coefficient was above 400 pC/N, being 80% of that for the original PMNZT, and the toughness showed twice of the PMNZT. When the volume fraction of the $ZrO_2$ was above 5%, however, the piezoelectric coefficient became abruptly decreased and it approached 20% of value for the PMNZT.

  • Piezoelectric Buzzer which has been generally used requires about 30kV/cm poling process and has the aging effects. In this study, 0.85 PZN - 0.10 BT - 0.05 PT system ceramics with additives of 0 - 2 wt% YS12TOS13T were fabricated and investigated on electromechanical coupling coefficient(kS1pT), electric field induced charge coefficient(dS131T), and sound level. As the results, in the 0.4 wt% YS12TOS13T added composition ceramics compared with the basic, kS1pT was increased from 0.355 to 0.39 and induced piezoelectric d constant increased from 204 to 220 x 10S0-12T (C/N) and sound level of electrostrictive Buzzer has the highest value of 71.5 dB under 8kV/cm bias electric field.

전자기기 냉각용 압전팬의 열전달 향상 (Heat Transfer Enhancement of a Piezoelectric Fan for Cooling of Electronic Devices)

  • Piezoelectric fans are thin elastic beams whose vibratory motion is actuated by means of a piezoelectric material bonded to the beam. These fans have found use as a means to enhance convective heat transfer while requiring only small amounts of power. This study presents new types of models with heat sink having air passage and investigates experimentally their heat transfer characteristics. From the comparison results for four models, the heat transfer coefficients of model 1 are approximately 44~66% higher than those of the reference model 0. The model 1 show the best overall performance about heat transfer and cooling capability. As shown in above results, it is necessary to design the heat sink with air pass for cooling of electronic devices, in order to increase the convective heat transfer coefficient of a piezoelectric fan for electronic cooling.

마이크로 압전 소자용 후막 PZT의 제조 및 물성 평가 (Fabrication and Characterizations of Thick PZT Films for Micro Piezoelectric Devices)

  • Recently, thick PZT films are required for the cases of micro piezoelectric devices with high driving force, high breakdown voltage and high sensitivity, and so on. In this work, thick PZT films were fabricated by Sol-Gel multi-coating method. Microstructures, and electrical properties of films were investigated by XRD, FESEM, impedance analyzer, and P-E hysteresis. PZT films with 2.7$mu extrm{m}$ to 4.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness were fabricated. Dielectric constant, loss, remnant polarization and coercive field of them were 880~1650 at 1kHz, 2~3% at 1kHz, 26~32 $\mu$C/$ extrm{cm}^2$, and 33~60kV/cm, respectively. Also a transverse piezoelectric coefficient $(e_{31,f})$ measurement system was fabricated and tested for thick film samples.

  • A great deal of attention has been focused on the application of miniaturized piezoelectric transformers to the low power source for the microsystem. The dielectric and piezoelectric properties of Pb(Mn,W,Sb,Nb)O$_3$-Pb(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ ceramics have been investigated on different calcination(750$^{\circ}C$∼950$^{\circ}C$) and sintering(1100$^{\circ}C$∼1300$^{\circ}C$) temperatures. The perovskitic phase was formed by the solid phase reaction of the oxides. Anisotropic (k$\sub$t/k$\sub$p/) properties of electromechanical coupling coefficient and piezoelectric coefficient have been proven to be depending on processing temperatures. The value of electromechanical coupling factor of K$\sub$p/>0.51 and a mechanical quality factor of Q$\sub$m/>2000 were obtained. The piezoelectric transformer was prepared using this ceramics with the composition of Pb(Mn,W,Sb,Nb)O$_3$-Pb(Zr,Ti)O$_3$ We studied the influence of different processing temperature on the microstructure and piezoelectric properties of complex PZT-based ceramics. and the characteristic of piezoelectric transformer.

디스크형 압전 변압기 의 전극크기 변화에 대한 전기적 특성 (Electric Characteristics of Disk-type Piezoelectric Transformer)

  • In this study, a step-down piezoelectric transformer was fabricated to utilize as an adapter for charging batteries of mobile electronic appliances. The ceramic part of the transformer is $Pb[(Mn_{1/3}Sb_{2/3})_{0.05}Zr_{0.475}Ti_{0.475}]O_3$ with mechanical quality factor of 1600, electromechanical coupling coefficient 59 %, and piezoelectric constant d33 1300, which can be utilized as a piezoelectric transformer. A simply fabricated disk-typed test pattern of diameter 28 mm and thickness 2 mm was used to characterize resonant frequency, Qm, kp according to the different input/output electrode area. efficiency and power as a function of load resistance was also investigated. The sample APT showed some spurious mode and BPT showed better frequency property. Taking all properties which are admittance, effective electromechanical coupling coefficient and mechanical quality factor most suitable for piezoelectric transformer is BPT which has 12 mm diameter electrode and the condition of 15 Vrms, 30 $\Omega$ made the maximum efficiency of 93.7 % and maximum power is 6W with 50 Vrms.

압전박막의 특성평가 및 표준화 (Characterization and Standardization of Piezoelectric Thin Films)

  • A great deal of research has been done in the field of characterization for piezoelectric thin films after the first report on the measurement for the piezoelectric coefficient of thin films in 1990. The main idea of this research is to provide a distinctive solution for the measurement and standardization of both the longitudinal and the transverse piezoelectric d-coefficients, d33 and d31, of ferroelectric thin films. In general, to get these two coefficients of thin films, two different measuring systems are required. Here, we propose the improved method for the evaluation of these two coefficients with single equipment and with the relatively convenient procedure. The two-step loading process of applying the both positive and the negative pressure has been introduced to acquire the piezoelectric coefficients. These results have been calibrated for both the longitudinal and 4he transverse piezoelectric d-coefficients, d33 and 431, of thin films by comparison with the virtual standard created from FEM. In this experiments, we have obtained d33 of 331pC/N and 031 of -92.2pC/N for the PZT thin films.

  • The piezoelectric materials convert from mechanical energy to electrical energy. The piezoelectric materials are used in various engineering applications such as piezoelectric ultrasonic actuators. Since the piezoelectric coupling characteristics of the actuator systems should be considered at the initial design stage, it is essential to analyze the piezoelectric coupling characteristics of the ultrasonic actuators. In this study, we analyzed the electromechanical characteristics of piezoelectric stacked actuator using the equivalent circuit model with modal mass stiffness parameters. It was compared the admittance of piezoelectric stack actuators with the analytical circuit model and the finite element model. Also, the coupling coefficient of piezoelectric stack actuator was discussed according to the number of stacks of actuators.

A simply fabricated disk-typed test pattern of diameter 28 mm and thickness 2 mm was used to characterize output voltage, step-down ratio as a function of electrode area with the input remained constant, and power, efficiency as a function of input voltage, and temperature-dependent electric characteristics were evaluated. The sample APT1 showed the best properties. The highest admittance, effective electromechanical coupling coefficient and an appropriate mechanical quality factor were obtained at the sample with the input/output area ratio of 1:1.5 at the common electrode, and the condition of 20 $V_{rms}$, $50\;\Omega$ made the maximum efficiency of $95\%$. The temperature was increased by 14.7'E as the input voltage was increased for $50\;V_{rms},\;50\;\Omega$.
