  • The main purpose of this study is the vibration suppression of rotating composite blade containing distributed piezoelectric sensors and actuators. The blade is modeled by thin-walled, single cell composite beam including the warping function, centrifugal force, Coriolis acceleration and piezoelectric effect. Further, the numerical study is performed m ing finite element method. The vibration of composite rotor is suppressed by piezocomposite actuators and PVDF sensors that are embedded between composite layers. A velocity feedback control algorithm coupling the direct and converse piezoelectric effect is used to actively control the' dynamic response of an integrated structure through a closed control loop. Responses of the rotating blade are investigated. Newmark time integration method is used to calculate the time response of the model. In the numerical simulation, the effect of parameters such as rotating speed, fiber orientation of the blade and size of actuators are studied in detail.

  • To suppress vibration and noise of mechanical structures piezoelectric ceramics play an increasing role as effective, simple and light-weighted damping devices as they are suitable for sensing and actuating. Out of the various piezoelectric damping methods this paper compares mode based active control strategies to passive shunt damping for thin plates. Therefore, a new approach for the optimal placement of the piezoelectric sensors/actuators, or more general transducers, is proposed after intense theoretical investigations based on the Kirchhoff kinematical hypotheses of plates; in particular, modal and nilpotent transducers are discussed in detail. Based on the proposed distribution a discrete design for modal transducers is implemented, tested and verified on an experimental setup. For active control the modal sensors clearly identify the eigenmodes, whereas the modal actuators impose distributed eigenstrains in order to reduce the transverse plate vibrations. In contrast to the modal control, passive shunt damping works without requiring additional actuators or auxiliary power and can therefore act as an autonomous system, but it is less effective compensating the flexible vibrations. Exemplarily, an acryl glass plate disturbed by an arbitrary force initialized by a loudspeaker is investigated. Comparing the different methods their specific advantages are highlighted and a significant broadband reduction of the vibrations of up to -20dB is obtained.

  • In this study, a new smart beam finite element is proposed for the finite element modeling of beam-type smart structures that are equipped with bonded plate-type piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Constitutive equations for the direct piezoelectric effect and converse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials are considered in the formulation. By using a variational principle, the equations of motion for the smart beam finite element are derived. The proposed 2-node beam finite element is an isoparametric element based on Timoshenko beam theory. The proposed smart beam finite element is applied to the free vibration control adopting a constant gain feedback scheme. The electrical force vector, which is obtained in deriving an equation of motion, is the control force equivalent to that in existing literature. Validity of the proposed element is shown through comparing the analytical results of the verification examples with those of other previous researchers. With the use of smart beam finite elements, simulation of free vibration control is demonstrated by sensing the voltage of the piezoelectric sensors and by applying the voltages to the piezoelectric actuators.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of the vibration isolation system using piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The active vibration absorber system consists of 4 pairs of PZT actuators bonded on aluminum plates. Hence, the active system is directly connected to the passive system. The rubber attached to the end of the beam is connected to the upper base as a structural member. It allows bending thus maximizing the vertical movement generated by the piezoceramic actuators. The piezoceramic sensors consists of 4 PZT sensors known to tilting, rolling and vertical movement. This paper also presents the development and the movement of the system.

  • In this paper a method of finding optimal positions for piezoelectric actuators and sensors on different structures is presented. The genetic algorithm and multi-objective genetic algorithm are selected for optimization and $H_{\infty}$ norm is defined as a cost function for the optimization process. To optimize the placement concerning the selected modes simultaneously, the multi-objective genetic algorithm is used. The optimization is investigated for two different structures: a cantilever beam and a simply supported plate. Vibrating structures are controlled in a closed loop with feedback gains, which are obtained using optimal LQ control strategy. Finally, output of a structure with optimized placement is compared with the output of the structure with an arbitrary, non-optimal placement of piezoelectric patches.

  • Truss structures are widely used in many space structures, such as large antenna systems, space stations, precision segmented telescopes because they are light in weight and amenable in assembly or deployment. But, due to the low damping capacity, they remain excited for a long time once disturbed. These structural vibrations can reduce life of the structures and cause unstable dynamic characteristics. In this research, vibration suppression experiment has carried out with a three-dimensional 15-member truss structure using two piezoelectric actuators. Piezoelectric actuators which consist of stacks of thin piezoelectric material disks are directly inserted to the truss structure collocated with the strain sensors. Each actuator is controlled digitally in decentralized manner, based on local integral and proportional feedback. The optimal positions of the actuators are determined by the modal damping ratio and the control force. Numerical simulation has carried out to determine optimal position of each actuator.

  • This paper presents modal characteristics of bowl parts feeder featuring piezoelectric actuators. As wellknown, the piezoelectric materials develop an electric charge proportional to a mechanical stress and vice versa. This generic phenomenon allows us to use the piezoelectric materials as sensors and actuators. Using the actuating property, we can device effective bowl parts feeder. The parts feeder activated by the piezoceramic actuators provides a large degree of freedom of controlling excitation magnitude and frequency, and thus accurate and fast feeding of various parts. As a first phase to demonstrate these advantages, a finite clement model of the bowl parts feeder is constructed and analyzed using commercial software packages. In addition, the simulated modal characteristics are compared with the measured ones to validate the proposed model.

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics of an end-capped hull structure with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators are studied. Finite element modeling is used to obtain practical governing equation of motion and boundary conditions of smart hull structure. Modal analysis is conducted to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the hull structure. Piezoelectric actuators are attached where the maximum control performance can be obtained. Active controller based on Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) theory is designed to suppress vibration of smart hull structure. It is observed that closed loop damping can be improved with suitable weighting factors in the developed LQG controller.
