The objective of this study was to establish the decision criteria of land suitability for red pepper using soil morphological and physical properties. The investigation was carried out in Jechen, Goesan, Euiseong, Andong, Gochang and Pyongchang district in Korea. The obtained results showed that factors related to the decision criteria of the land suitability for red pepper cultivation were soil texture, soil drainage class, land slope, available soil depth and stone content. The criteria of the best suitable soil for red pepper was coarse loamy, well drainage class, C-slope (7-15%), 10-20% gravel content and available soil depth deeper than 100 cm. Also in the best suitable soil, hardpan was located below 100 cm from the soil surface. Outbreak rate of phytophthora blight occurred well in the soils with high clay content, poor drainage class, low land slope and low gravel content. Database determining the decision criteria of the land suitability for red pepper in Jinchen-gun was established by Arc info GIS tool.
This study was to investigate beneficial effects of microbial mixture on red pepper which was capable of promoting plant growth by solubilizing insoluble phosphate as well as protecting plants from pathogenic attack. Saccharomyces sp. L13 was isolated for phosphate solubilizing activity on aluminium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, calcium hydrophosphate, and magnesium hydrophosphate. On the other hand, Bacillus sp. L32 was isolated for antagonistic activity against Phytophthora capsisi and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, causing Phytophthora blight and Anthracnose disease in pepper, respectively. The strain L32 exhibited antagonistic activities both under dual culture assays and detached leaves assays. The each strain under the condition of mixed cultivation exhibited the same growth rates as one under pure cultivation. In greenhouse study, the mixed culture showed the both effect of plant growth promotion and reduction of disease symptom development against P. capsisi and C. gloeosporioides providing a potential as effective microbial agent for plant husbandry.
This study was conducted to estimate of future productivity for major spicy vegetables by the change of meteorological factors, temperature and precipitation. Based on analysis of meteorological factors, incidence of major disease(phytophthora blight and anthracnose) for hot pepper was over 50% with temperature over $18.3^{\circ}C$ in May and precipitation over 532 mm in July. And the meteorological factors in the August have deeply related to the incidence of virus disease(CMV and BBWV2) for hot pepper, however, both the meteorological factors and the incidence of virus disease showed to the opposite tendency. An analysis of the relevance of the white rot disease and the meteorological factors for garlic, a disease was highly investigated with temperature $15.0^{\circ}C$ to $15.9^{\circ}C$ in April to May. On the onion, higher incidence of white rot was investigated with temperature over $4.0^{\circ}C$ in November to January and precipitation over 40 mm in March. The occurrence of major disease for spicy vegetables and meteorological factors as a result of regression analysis, the optimal cultivation area of peppers and onions will be gradually expanded to the central regions in the near future in Korea.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of rain-shelter types on growth, and fruit quality of red pepper (Capsicum annuum, 'Kemmaru') cultured in paddy. Applied rain-shelter types were outfield (control), simple rain-shelter plastic house with 2 rows (2R), simple rain-shelter plastic house with 4 rows (4R), and perfect plastic house (House). The plant height was the highest in Houses treatment. There was no difference in leaf length and width among the rain-shelter treatments. The fresh and dry weight of red pepper was high in order of House > 4R > 2R > Control. The ASTA value is irregular tendency among the treatments. Hunter's color value 'a' and 'b' was not different from among the treatments. Phytophthora blight, powdery mildew, bacterial spot were not occurred in all of treatments, and Anthracnose was only occurred in control. Mite, Microcephalothrips abdominalis, and Bemisia tabaci were not occurred in all of treatments, and aphid, Helicoverpa assulta, and virus were occurred all of treatments as same degree. Our results will provide rain-shelter cultivation of red pepper can be increase dry yield and decrease disease and insects.

Pseudomonas fluorescens 2112, isolated in Korea as an indigenous antagonistic bacteria, can produce 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (2,4-DAPG) and the siderophore pyoveridin2112 for the control of phytophthora blight of red-pepper. P. fluorescens 2112 was classified into a new genotype C among the 17 genotypes of 2,4-DAPG producers, by phlD restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). The colonizing ability of P. fluorescens 2112 in pea rhizosphere was equal to the well-known pea colonizers, P. fluorescens Q8r1 (genotype D) and MVP1-4 (genotype P), after 6 cycling cultivations for 18 weeks. Four tested 2,4-DAPG-producing Pseudomonas spp. could colonize with about a 96% dominance ratio against total bacteria in pea rhizosphere. The strain P. fluorescens 2112 was as good a colonizer as other Pseudomonas spp. genotypes in pea plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria.
The year of 2003 was characterized as a cool humid year. Low temperature and frequent rains were continued during March to July, resulting in 1.6 times higher rainfalls and 32% less sunshine period compared to the average yean Due to 2003's climatic condition, rice blast, and bacterial leaf blight occurred severely. Higher rainfalls caused severe epidemic of phytophthora disease and, in case of red-pepper, 55% of cultivation acreage was devastated by the disease over the country. Besides, crop diseases which become severe under cool-humid conditions, such as gray mold, sclerotinia rot, downy mildew, increased significantly compared to the previous year. In fruit trees, brown spot of apple, and pear scab occurred severely causing much yield loss.
This study was carried out to identify the three antifungal substances isolated from the culture medium of Pseudomonas sp. A-183 which is antagonistic against Phytophthora capsici. The substance A and B showed positive reactions at the Molish test and Anthrone test, but negative one at the Fehling test, strongly suggesting that both substance A and B had nonreducing sugar frameworks. The substance C only exhibited the phenomenon of the UV induced fluorescence. From the qualitative analysis with the spectroscopic techniques such as UV, Mass, IR and NMR, the substance A and B were known to be composed to sugar and fatty acid, and showed a base peak of 171(m/e). It was identified that substance A was $(2-O-L-rhamnosyl-{\alpha}-L-rhamnosyl-{\beta}-hydroxydecanoyl-{\beta}-hydroxy$ decanoic acid) and the substance B was $({\alpha}-L-rhamnosyl-{\beta}-hydroxydecanoyl-{\beta}-hydroxy$ decanoic acid). The substance C was identified as a phenazine from the results of qualitative analysis with the spectroscopic techniques such as UV, Mass, IR and NMR.
Auxin-producing antagonistic bacterium K11, which can inhibit Phytophtora capsici, was isolated from a local red-pepper field soil in Gyeong-buk. In order to check for additional PGPR(plant growth promoting rhizobacterium) functions of the strain K11, we confirmed siderophore and cellulase productions by CAS (chrome azurol S) blue agar and CMC plate with congo red, respectively. The strain K11 was identified as Bacillus licheniformis with 98% similarity on 16s rDNA comparison and Biolog analyses. B. licheniformis K11 promoted mung bean adventitious root induction and enhanced root growth of mung bean (160%), pea (150%), and Chinese cabbage (130%), Also, B. licheniformis K11 was able to effectively suppress (63%) P. capsici causing red-pepper blight in the pot in vivo test. Therefore, we could select a triple-functional PGPR which has auxin, siderophore, and cellulase producing ability for effective crops production in organic farming.
Climate in the year of 2000 was characterized as a long severe drought in tile spring, unusually high and low temperature in summer, two times of typoons, and floods by heavy rains in fall. Rice leaf and panicle blast and bacterial grain rot occurred severely comparing with 1999 and Bipolaris leaf spot spread over tile country. Phytophthora blight and anthracnose in red-pepper became epidemic especially in the late season causing severe yield losses. Tomato fusaruim wilt, CGMMV, powdery mildew, and sudden wilt syndrom of cucurbits and strawberry powdery mildew were also severe in 2000. In garlic, sclerotium rot occurred severely mainly due to the frequent rainfalls in planting time and much snowfalls in 1999's winter. Spring potato had severe infection of viruses due to a long spring drought, and fall potato had high incidence of bacterial soft rot and bacterial wilt due to fall floods by heavy rains. In sweet potato fusarium wilt was the most severe as in other year. Disease incidence of apple and pear trees was rotatively mild compared with previous years. In wheat and barley, Gibberella petch rarely occurred because of spring drought.
