  • Many researchers have been studied with guard cell protoplasts and detached epidermis as they think that properly stabilized protoplasts and detached epidermis retain many of the properties of intact guard cells. However, some studies have shown that stomata in detached epidermis behave differently, both quantitatively and qualitatively, from those in the intact leaf. Stomata in the intact leaf are very sensitive to environmental factors such as light, $CO_2$ and osmotic stress, but stomata in detached epidermis are less sensitive to these factors than those in the intact leaf. The clearest evidence to suggest the different response between detached epidermis and intact leaf obtained from the experiments with heavy metal, cadmium. 3-weeks old Commelina. communis was transferred to and grown in Hoagland solution in the presence or absence of 5 mM $Cd^{2+}$ for 4 days. The application of $Cd^{2+}$ showed about 70% inhibition of stomatal conductance when measured at various light intensity (100-1,000 $\mu$mole $m^{-2}s^{-1}). However, stomata in detached epidermis floated on an incubation medium containing 100 $\mu$M $Cd^{2+}$ opened to a degree of about 8.38 fm, but the stomata treated with no cadmium opened to 3.74 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. These results were unexpected as the intact leaf grown in a Hoagland solution containing cadmium showed very negative physiological responses. These results showed that stomata in detached epidermis and in the intact leaf could respond reversely. Therefore, it is possible that we now misunderstand how stomata open in real natural condition.

  • This study has been performed to review critical issues affecting continuous residence in profit(self-paid) assistant living facilities for the elderly in the United States. There are three factors influencing continuous residence of frail elderly in the facilities as long as they want without involuntary discharge : Financial ability, behavioral aspects, and facility management situation. Regarding financial ability, income, purchase of insurance policy, cashable assets, willingfulness to pay, and health status were found to be crucial determinants of continuous residence. Overall, 40-50% of those aged 65+ are financially able to stay in the assistant facilities as long as they want, without involuntary discharge. As for behavioral aspects, extroversions, congeniality, culture & life style, conscientiousness, preference for person, and physiological habits were found to be crucial determinants of continuous residence. As for the management situation, it is essential that facilities reach nature level of self-governing rights of the older residents and good local images, and conflicts among the residents and managing parties be resolved on the agreeable standards of inspectors. finally in this study, it is proposed that in Korea, national pension authority offer a liability package for assistant residence, for the case of individual bankruptcy.

  • The government policies and initiatives to guarantee sustainable energy and clean environmental conditions contributed to the introduction of green technology electricity appliances in the market. This study sought to determine the physiological and socio-economics-demographic factors driving residential electricity consumers to use green technology electricity appliances, mainly solar PV, smart meter, electric vehicle, and battery storage technology. By understanding consumer intention, the investors of solar PV, battery storage, electric vehicle, and smart meter can estimate the demand and upscale the market for the corresponding products. For that purpose, the intention to use the solar PV, smart meter, electric vehicle, and battery storage function is developed by utilizing the combination of the theory of planned behavior, technology acceptance, and reasoning action. A reliable and valid structured online questionnaire and stepwise multiple regression are used to identify the possible factors that drive consumer behavior intention. The results show that the social influence, knowledge on RE, and perceived price significantly influence residential consumers' willingness to adopt the technologies offered. The findings of this study suggest that the involvement of NGOs, public figures, and citizens' cooperation are all necessary to spread information about the government's objectives and support Malaysia's present energy and environmental policies.

  • The incidence of stress-related type 2 diabetes (stress-T2D), which is aggravated by physiological stress, is increasing annually. The effects of Lactobacillus, a key component of probiotics, have been widely studied in diabetes; however, studies on the effects of postbiotics are still limited. Here, we aimed to examine the mechanism through which heat-killed Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LRCC5314 (HK-LRCC5314) alleviates stress-T2D in a cold-induced stress-T2D C57BL/6 mouse model. HK-LRCC5314 markedly decreased body weight gain, adipose tissue (neck, subcutaneous, and epididymal) weight, and fasting glucose levels. In the adipose tissue, mRNA expression levels of stress-T2D associated factors (NPY, Y2R, GLUT4, adiponectin, and leptin) and pro-inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-6, and CCL-2) were also altered. Furthermore, HK-LRCC5314 increased the abundance of Barnesiella, Alistipes, and butyrate-producing bacteria, including Akkermansia, in feces and decreased the abundance of Ruminococcus, Dorea, and Clostridium. Thus, these findings suggest that HK-LRCC5314 exerts protective effects against stress-T2D via gut microbiome modulation, suggesting its potential as a supplement for managing stress-T2D.

  • Blood pressure is one of the key physiological parameters for determining human health, and can prove whether human cardiovascular function is healthy or not. In general, what we call blood pressure refers to arterial blood pressure. Blood pressure fluctuates greatly and, due to the influence of various factors, even varies with each heartbeat. Therefore, achievement of continuous blood pressure measurement is particularly important for more accurate diagnosis. It is difficult to achieve long-term continuous blood pressure monitoring with traditional measurement methods due to the continuous wear of measuring instruments. On the other hand, radar technology is not easily affected by environmental factors and is capable of strong penetration. In this study, by using machine learning, tried to develop a linear blood pressure prediction model using data from a public database. The radar sensor evaluates the measured object, obtains the pulse waveform data, calculates the pulse transmission time, and obtains the blood pressure data through linear model regression analysis. Confirm its availability to facilitate follow-up research, such as integrating other sensors, collecting temperature, heartbeat, respiratory pulse and other data, and seeking medical treatment in time in case of abnormalities.

  • Greenhouse gas emissions are one of the critical factors that drive change in rice cropping systems. Within this changing system, less water irrigation and chemical fertilizer are seriously considered, as well combining precision farming technologies with irrigation control. Water and phosphorus (P) fertilizer are two of the most critical inputs in rice cultivation. Due to the lack of water availability in the system, P fertilizer is not available, especially in acidic soil conditions. Moreover, the various types of abiotic stresses, such as drought, high temperature, salinity, submergence, and limited fertilizer result in significant yield loss in the system. Even in the late stage of growth, the waves caused by diseases and insects make the field more unfruitful. Therefore, agronomists and breeders need to identify the secondary phenotypes to estimate the yield loss of when stress appears. The prediction will be clearer if we have a set of markers tagging the causal variation and the associated precise phenotype indices. Although there have been various studies for abiotic stress tolerance, we still lack functional molecular markers and phenotype indices. This is due to the underlying challenges caused by environmental factors in highly unpredictable regional and yearly environmental conditions in the field system. Pupl (phosphorus uptake 1) is still known as the first QTL associated with phosphorus uptake and have been validated in different field crops. Interestingly, some pyramiding lines of Pupl and other QTLs for other stress tolerances showed preferable phenotypes in the yield. Precise physiological studies with the help of genomics are on-going and some results will be discussed.

  • This study was done to examine the risk factors between controls group and acute brain infarction patients group, and to compare high risk group with low risk group through NIHSS(National Institutes of Health stroke scale). We compared the risk factors between acute brain infarction patients group(N=180) and controls group(N=93). And according to risk factors, we analyzed 1st NIHss, after 3 weeks improved extent within acute brain infarction patients group. The results were as follows. 1. Among the risk factors, HTN, DM, the blood levels of HCY were significantly higher and the blood levels of HDL-C was significantly lower in patients group than controls group. 2. In scale analysis according to risk factors, 1st NIHss were significantly higher in Hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia, Obesity, High-Homocysteine, HTN, DM, previous CVA history group than low risk group within acute brain infarction patients group. 3. In after 3 weeks improved extent analysis according to risk factors, improved extent were lower in Hyperlipidemia, HTN, DM, previous cardiac history, older age group than low risk group within acute brain infarction patients group. The above results suggest that significant risk factors of acute brain infarction, and shows the High risk group that had risk factor of brain infarction recognized from the former research tends to have higher 1st NIHss. Also the High risk group tends to have lower improved extent, but the results are not statistically significant. Furthur research on subject is needed.

  • In recent years, the frequency of warnings about particulate matter (PM) has gradually increased in Korea, along with an increase in its intensity. Because of their vast surface area, reactivity to external particles, and characteristics of their leaves, urban trees can act as biofilters, reducing PM pollution. However, the air pollutant PM can cause various types of damage not only to human health but also to vegetation. Studies performed to date on the responses of trees to PM are still insufficient. Here, we analyzed the correlation between PM adsorption and physiological and biochemical responses of four major street tree species, namely, Abies holophylla, Acer buergerianum, Pinus densiflora, and Quercus variabilis, under conditions of approximately 300 ㎍ m-3 of fly ash emissions using a phytotron. The results showed that the physiological and biochemical responses and PM adsorption differed depending on the tree species. In correlation analysis, it was confirmed that there were positive correlations between physiological factors, and PM adsorption on adaxial leaf surfaces negatively impacted the physiological characteristics. This study provides fundamental information for selecting tree species to reduce PM pollution and develop sustainable urban forests.

  • The purpose of this paper is to review the relationship between job characteristics and job stress responses(physiological response, psychological response, behavioral response), and the moderating effect of social support. Based on the responses from 187 employees in small & medium manufacturing industry, hierarchical regressional analysis showed that job characteristics factors have partly negative relationships with job stress response. However, job variety has positive relationship. Social support has partly moderating effect on the relationship between job characteristics and job stress.
