  • The concept of human emotion is recently demanded to be imbedded in industrial product and environment for enhancing quality of life. Human emotion is attempted to be qualified and quantified by physiological measurements. EEG variation, one of the physiological measurement, is observed to characterize psychological response in this study. This study is to find function and process of brain according to emotion. Twenty university students participated in this study and experienced positive and negative emotion by auditory stimulus. Delta, theta, alpha and beta waves showed characteristic variation in normalized sense according to positive and negative emotion. Local area showing significant difference between positive and negative emotion decreases with stimulus duration. Delta, theta and beta waves increase with negative emotion while alpha wave does with positive emotion.

  • Lactobacillus casei, one of the most widely used probiotics, has been reported to alleviate multiple diseases. However, the effects of this species on intestinal diseases are strain-specific. Here, we aimed to screen L. casei strains with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-alleviating effects based on in vitro physiological characteristics. Therefore, the physiological characteristics of 29 L. casei strains were determined, including gastrointestinal transit tolerance, oligosaccharide fermentation, HT-29 cell adhesion, generation time, exopolysaccharide production, acetic acid production, and conjugated linoleic acid synthesis. The effects of five candidate strains on mice with induced colitis were also evaluated. The results showed that among all tested L. casei strains, only Lactobacillus casei M2S01 effectively relieved colitis. This strain recovered body weight, restored disease activity index score, and promoted anti-inflammatory cytokine expression. Gut microbiota sequencing showed that L. casei M2S01 restored a healthy gut microbiome composition. The western blotting showed that the alleviating effects of L. casei M2S01 on IBD were related to the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway. A good gastrointestinal tolerance ability may be one of the prerequisites for the IBD-alleviating effects of L. casei. Our results verified the efficacy of L. casei in alleviating IBD and lay the foundation for the rapid screening of L. casei strain with IBD-alleviating effects.

  • The purpose of this work is to identify the characteristic of eye movement for visual training of the elderly. This investigation is to examine the relationship between the head and the eye motor system for the localization of visual target direction in three-dimensional space. All experiments were performed in a soundproof chamber. Twenty-one red LEDs (Light-Emitting Diode, Brightness: 20cd/$m^2$) arrayed in three lines on a half circle-surrounding panel are used. LEDs are horizontally 30 degree apart and vertically 20 degree apart from each other. The condition of stimulation is random and anti-saccade. Physiological parameter such as EOG (Electro-Oculography) was measured by BIOPAC system. We measure the mean latency time, which is the time from the start of visual stimulation to the response of the human body. The result shows that the mean latency time is short in the case of the condition of anti-saccade, the fixed head and a quarter visual stimulation. This finding can be used in developing programs for various visual improvements for the elderly by analyzing the characteristic of eye movement.

  • Stresses from desolate urban environments cause illnesses and worsen health conditions of urban residents, while natural environments have a positive influence on human. Natural healing programs such as forest therapy and horticultural therapy can be differentiated by the characteristic of activity space. However, previous studies of healing programs have focused on either forest therapy or horticulture therapy and there is a limit to comprehending the effects of adopting and connecting various healing programs. This study compares and analyzes the physiological and psychological effects of forest therapy and horticultural therapy to identify the effects and differences by types of healing programs. The before and after effects of horticultural therapy and forest therapy are measured by experiment and survey for 5 days with 5 subjects in each program. For physiological reaction, blood pressure, pulse, and cortisol levels are measured and the profile of moods states(POMS) is used to measure psychological reaction. Collected data are analyzed with the analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Paired-Sample T-test in SPSS 18.0. The results of this study are as follows: 1) forest therapy and horticultural therapy show positive effects in physiological and physiological aspects, 2) forest therapy is more effective than horticultural therapy in physiological relaxation and stress mitigation, 3) horticultural therapy has a tendency to alleviate depression more effectively than forest therapy. In conclusion, this study contributes to providing fundamental information for the development of healing programs and design guidelines for healing spaces through identifying the characteristics of each healing program.

  • Purpose: We conducted a literature review for analyzing the effect of massage on children according to their developmental stage in Korea. Methods: Various academic databases were utilized for a bibliographic search, and the keyword, 'massage', was used to identify relevant references without limits on years to determine the overall research trends. Finally, 38 references cited from 1998 to 2014 were selected in Korea. Results: Only two studies adapted a randomized controlled trial design. With regard to children's developmental stage, half studies were conducted for neonates. Moreover, the percentage of application of a sensory stimulation protocol in newborn infants was 47.3%. Eighty four point one percent of studies measured physiological characteristics as outcome variables and the rate of growth was the most common (46.5%) physiological characteristic. On the contrary, only one study (4%) was conducted to evaluate the effect of massage on psychological characteristics in school aged and the adolescents. Conclusion: This study provides fundamental data on the development and direction for future studies by analyzing studies on pediatric massage in Korea.

  • Oligosaccharide modification by N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase-V (GnT-V), a glycosyltransferase encoded by the Mgat5 gene that catalyzes the formation of ${\beta}1$,6GlcNAc (N-acetylglucosamine) branches on N-glycans, is thought to be associated with cancer growth and metastasis. Overexpression of GnT-V in cancer cells enhances the signaling of growth factors such as epidermal growth factor by increasing galectin-3 binding to polylactosamine structures on receptor N-glycans. In contrast, GnT-V deficient mice are born healthy and lack ${\beta}1$,6GlcNAc branches on N-glycans, but develop immunological disorders due to T-cell dysfunction at 12-20 months of age. We have developed Mgat5 transgenic (Tg) mice (GnT-V Tg mice) using a ${\beta}$-actin promoter and found characteristic phenotypes in skin, liver, and T cells in the mice. Although the GnT-V Tg mice do not develop spontaneous cancers in any organs, there are differences in the response to external stimuli between wild-type and GnT-V Tg mice. These changes are similar to those seen in cancer progression but are unexpected in some aspects. In this review, we summarize what is known about GnT-V functions in skin and liver cells as a means to understand the physiological roles of GnT-V in mice.
