  • The ray-tracing technique was used to optimize the light guide plate for the purpose of improving the on-axis luminance on the edge-lit backlights. One-dimensional prisms and engraved V-shaped patterns were applied to the upper and the lower surfaces of the light guide plate, respectively. By optimizing the apex angles of these micro-structures, as well as the shape of the reverseprism film put over the light guide plate, highly-collimated light-output distribution could be obtained on the backlight, which may contribute to the development of mobile LCD's with low power consumption.

  • In this paper, magnetic buoyancy force on nonmagnetic solid object submerged in magnetic liquid was simulated and measured. For the evaluation of the force, a multi-physics approach of hydrostatic equilibrium considering magnetic body force as well as gravity is presented. The magnetic body force should be regarded as an additional forcing term in the momentum equation of hydrodynamics. It is also shown that the virtual air-gap based Kelvin's force formula is a useful method for the calculation of force distribution in the magnetic liquid. The experimental result which was performed by a load-cell measurement system agreed quantitatively well with the numerical one.

  • A numerical simulation has been conducted to investigate the physics of the Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube. Even though currently available turbulent models cannot predict such complex flow accurately, it was expected that the simulation would enlighten underlying physics qualitatively. The balance of energy on a fluid particle moving along some typical streamlines through shear work and heat transfer was investigated to explain the physics of energy separation process. It was found that the heat transfer cancels major part of the energy separation done by shear work. It was also found that the most of energy separation occur near inlet and hot outlet.

  • In this study, halloysite nanoparticles-doped epoxy resin was synthesised using the casting method. The MH-300A density metre revealed that the density of the fabricated composites changed from 1.132 to 1.317 g/cm3 as the halloysite nanoparticle concentration increased. The Fourier transform infrared was recorded for the synthesised composites. Furthermore, the γ-ray shielding properties of the synthesised composites were evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation and a theoretical programme, XCOM. The linear attenuation coefficient of the epoxy resin increased by 43% (at γ-energy of 15 keV) and 14% (at γ-photon energy of 662 keV) when the concentration of the halloysite nanoparticles was increased from 0 wt% to 40 wt%, respectively.

  • The Geant4 simulation toolkit provides improved or renewed physics model according to the version. The latest Geant4.9.3 which has been recoded by developers applies inserted Livermore data and renewed physics model to the low energy electromagnetic physics model. And also, Geant4.9.3 improved the physics factors by modified code. In this study, the stopping power and CSDA(Continuously Slowing Down Approximation) range data of electron or particles were acquired in various material and then, these data were compared with NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology) data. Through comparison between data of Geant4 simulation and NIST, the improvement of physics model on low energy electromagnetic of Geant4.9.3 was evaluated by comparing the Geant4.9.2.

  • Researches on particle physics have benefited our everyday life in many aspects. They have tested the safety of the objects we use everyday, conducted experiments to examine harmful environments to man, and treated diseases. Despite the usefulness of particle physics in a range of fields, however, it's difficult to conduct researches and experiments directly. But the advancements in the computer industry have allowed for experiments of particle physics in virtual simulations. One of the foremost simulation libraries for particle physics that have been researched actively these days, Geant4 has been put to diverse uses in particle physics. This study designed GUI so that physicists, who were not good at programming, could use a simulation library faster, more accurately, and more conveniently. It also developed the Geant4Editor, a simulation automation framework. The advantages of the Geant4Editor include automatic generations of essential classes in a simulation using Geant4 libraries and real-time reflection of user demands in a simulation. It also allows for efficient management of resources(user-created data) through the Data Manager.

  • A method to determine the transverse magnification (TM) of an imaging system is discussed. This method is different in that TM can be determined accurately by using distortion analysis. We demonstrate the validity of the method via numerical simulation with accompanying experimental data for a thick bi-convex lens.

  • We test an evolution of a giant void using an N-body simulation. We find the void expansion is faster than the rest part of the universe and the shape of an isolated aspherical void becomes more spherical as it evolves.
