  • Controlling fluid flows in micro scales is a non-trivial issue among those who are involved in designing lab-on-chips. Pumping and mixing by using electrokinetic principles has been popular in that the method requires a few parts and it is easy to control. This paper explains the basic mechanism of the electroosmotic flows caused by AC together with presenting some numerical results. In particular, the fundamental, physical idea involved in the mechanism will be illustrated in terms of the kinematic aspect. Since the electroosmotic flows are mainly driven by the motion of ions, we also demonstrate the ion motions by using the numerical-visualization method.

  • The objective of this study is to establish the method of conservation for traditional Korean settlements, based on the field surveys on the representative traditional settlements in Korea and China. The method is approached from grasping the conservation mechanism in which non-physical aspects deeply influence physical ones. The study has analyzed the characteristics and problems in the current methods of conservation for the traditional settlements, through comparing conservation practices at the World Heritage-class settlements such as Yangdong, Hahoi, and Oeam villages in Korea and Xidi-cun, Hong-cun, and Dangjia-cun in China. As a consequence of the study, the conservation method for the traditional Korean settlements is established as follows; Firstly, the conservation targets are classified into 4 types in terms of the relations of elements; individual, correspondent, sequential, and network elements. Secondly, the conservation strategies include the structuralizations of targets, by means of sequencing and networking. Thirdly, the conservation programs are made in consideration of the sustenance, transformation, replacement, and extinction of traditional use patterns.

  • Numerical simulations of freely propagating flames burning $H_2/HCl/Air$ Air mixtures were performed at atmospheric pressure in order to understand the effect of hydrogen chloride on flame structures. The chemical and physical effects of hydrogen chloride on flame structures were observed. A chemical kinetic mechanism was developed, which involved 26 gas-phase species and 198 forward elementary reactions. Under several equivalence ratios the flame speeds were calculated and compared with those obtained from the experiments, the results of which were in good agreement. As hydrogen chloride as additive was added into $H_2/Air$ flame, the flame speed, radical concentration and NO production rate were decreased. The chemical effect of hydrogen chloride caused the reduction of radical concentration, and then the decrease of the net rate of NO production. It was found that the influence in the reduction of $EI_{NO}$ with the addition of hydrogen chloride was attributed more due to the chemical effect than the physical effect.

  • With the recent development of sleep medicine, insomnia has been perceived as a disease from a simple symptom. As there are various causes in a disease, proper treatment according to each cause is necessary for a more effective treatment In general, insomnia is classified into five categrories of physical, physiological, psychological, psychiatric and pharmacological aspects. However, such categorizations are often insufficient in treating insomnia. Furthermore understanding of the developmental mechanisms of insomnia is required. The function of sleep is developed and maintained through the balance of the reciprocal forces of sleep and arousal. These forces are contantly regulated by what is called a circadian rhythm. Sleep is induced by this rhythm which is affected by factors such as awakening time in the morning, amount of intellectual function, amount and time length of physical exercise and sunlight Insomnia could develop when this rhythm is delayed and leads to a "forbidden zone" which is a very difficult period for inducing sleep about two to four hours before the routine bedtime. Whereas sleep gradually develops in line with the circardian rhythm, arousal can occur very abruptly by any cause triggered by emotional discomfort or anxiety. Such characteristic and emotional factors as perfectionism, separation anxiety, secondary gain, insecurity, and negative cognition may provoke the inner anxiety and fear for insomnia, which can lead acute insomnia to a chronic one. As chronic insomnia is developed by multiple causes and factors, integrated approaches through analysis of above mentioned factors will be more effective in the treatment of insomnia than a simple administration of hypnotics.

  • The physical phenomena of rectangular open cavity are numerically investigated in this paper Two-dimensional cavity problems with laminar boundary layers in upstream are simulated by using the compressible Wavier-Stokes equations. The high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes are used for the evaluation of spatial derivatives and the time integration. Cross-correlation is used to analyze the characteristics of wave propagation along time and spatial. Sudden phase shifting of 90 degrees is appeared near downstream edge, and this is coincident with the phase lag suggested in original Rossiter's equation. The results give a further understanding of the physical phenomenon of noise generation, and the resonance of flow and acoustic in cavity. Moreover, modified Rossiter's equation, which is more accurate and can be applied in various conditions, is suggested. The distance from the point of vortex generation to the point of vortex collapsing acts as effective distance of cavity resonance, and the phase difference between the point of vortex collapsing and the point of acoustic source acts as phase lag. The mechanism of acoustic generation is fully understood in this paper. The mechanism of acoustic generation is fully understood in this paper.

  • Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of kinases involved in the transduction of cellular signals that promote lipid hydrolysis. PKC plays a pivotal role in mediating cellular responses to extracellular stimuli involved in proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Comparative analysis of the PKC-${\alpha},{\beta},{\varepsilon}$ isozymes of 200 recently sequenced microbial genomes was carried out using variety of bioinformatics tools. Diversity and evolution of PKC was determined by sequence alignment. The ser/thr protein kinases of Streptomyces coelicolor A3 (2), is the only bacteria to show sequence alignment score greater than 30% with all the three PKC isotypes in the sequence alignment. S.coelicolor is the subject of our interest because it is notable for the production of pharmaceutically useful compounds including anti-tumor agents, immunosupressants and over two-thirds of all natural antibiotics currently available. The comparative analysis of three human isotypes of PKC and Serine/threonine protein kinase of S.coelicolor was carried out and possible mechanism of action of PKC was derived. Our analysis indicates that Serine/ threonine protein kinase from S. coelicolor can be a good candidate for potent anti-tumor agent. The presence of three representative isotypes of the PKC super family in this organism helps us to understand the mechanism of PKC from evolutionary perspective.

  • A flow visualization study was carried out for the branch pipe mixing flow in which a jet was issued normally to the fully developed pipe flow. An instantaneous laser tomographic method was used for cross flow Reynolds numbers based on the cross flow diameter D ranged $Re_{cf}=5.26{\times}10^3{\sim}1.13{\times}10^4$, diameter ratios d/D = 0.1 ~ 0.2 and velocity ratios R = 0.5 ~ 10. Oil mist with the size of about $10{\mu}m$ diameter was used for the scattering particle. The main purpose of this study was to reveal the physical mechanism and the structure of vortices formation with varying the velocity ratios and diameter ratios in the branch pipe flow. It was found that the physical mechanism and the structures of vortices formation were quite different depending on the velocity ratios. Particularly in the case of R < 1, the typical vortex shows single loop shape and that for the case of R > 1 depicts mushroom-like structure in the cross flow jet.

  • Monitoring data from agricultural reservoirs throughout the country were analyzed to classify agricultural reservoirs according to physical characteristics and COD concentrations, and evaluate the relationships bet-ween water quality items. The physical and chemical data of total 498 reservoirs were analyzed from 1990 to 2001. Average COD, TP, TN, Chl-a, SS concentrations for the reservoirs and pollutant loadings from their watersheds were used for the analysis. It was possible that reservoirs were classified to 4 types using the relationships between the ratios of effective storage per water surface (ST/WS ratio) and COD concentrations. It is recommended that the improvement measures of polluted reservoirs should be performed as following order : integrated consolidation type (complex mechanism type) $\rightarrow$ watershed consolidation type $\rightarrow$ integrated consolidation type (external mechanism type) $\rightarrow$ in-lake consolidation type $\rightarrow$ conservation type and the depth (ST/WS ratio) of reservoir maintained over 5~6 m for water quality improvement. The decision coefficients ($r^2$) between Chl-a and other items (COD, T-P, SS, T-N) were 0.6915, 0.6732, 0.5327, 0.3352, respectively. Therefore, reservoir managers could evaluate the trophic state of reservoirs by COD concentrations.

  • Physical and chemical properties on the aging inhibition mechanism of hydrous aluminum oxide were studied by means of dehydration velocity, activation energy, DTA, TGA, IR spectra, X-ray diffraction and TMA. During aging, changes may occur in the hydrous aluminum oxide structure which results in a loss of acid reactivity and in crystal formation to the hydrated hydrous alumina. The results obtained from the X-ray diffraction pattern and DTA, TGA thermogram studies showed that the aging product stabilized with either sorbitol or mannitol was hydrous aluminum oxide ($Al_{2}O_{3}{\cdot}xH_{2}O$) but the aging product not stabilized with either sorbitol or mannitol product not stabilized was hydrated hydrous aluminum oxide $Al_{2}O_{3}{\cdot}xH_{2}O{\cdot}yH_{2}O$. The activation energy of dehydration of the hydrous almina was about 17 Kcal. mol$^{1}$ deg$^{-1}$ which was observed a little less than that of 22 kcal.mol.$^{-1}$ deg.$^{-1}$ of or mannitol, the inhibition mechanism in the aging process from oxide is assumed to prevent the formation of the hydrated hydrous aluminum oxide and the aging process is thought of as analogous to the polymorphic transformations which occur as a system converts to its most stable state.

  • Mudstone is a very common rock that, when in contact with water, can exhibit considerable volume change and breakdown. This behavior of mudstone is frequently encountered in geotechnical engineering and has a considerable influence on infrastructure stability. This is particularly important in the present work, which focuses on mitigating the harmful properties of mudstone. The samples studied are of Permian Age mudstone from Shandong Province, China. Modification tests using organic silicone additive material were carried out. The mechanisms of physical properties modification of mudstone were comparatively studied using corresponding test methods, and the modification mechanism of organic silicone additive material acting on mudstone was analyzed. The following conclusions were drawn. The surface texture and characters of mudstone changed dramatically, surface character turns from hydrophilic to hydrophobic after organic silicone additive material modification. The changes in the surface character indicate a reduction in the water sensitivity of mudstone. After modification, the shape of porosity and fracture of mudstone changed unremarkable, and the total and free expansion ratios decreased obviously, whereas the strength increased markedly.
