Establishment of Washing Conditions for Salad to Reduce the Microbial Hazard (샐러드의 미생물학적 위해 감소를 위한 세척 조건 확립)

  • The purposes of this study were to establish washing conditions for vegetable salad to reduce the microbial hazard by using sodium hypochlorite solution and eventually to implement HACCP for salad processing. By using the salad production line of Shinkeum Co. located in Gwacheon, Gyunggi-do, salad samples were washed under several washing conditions (chlorine dip period, chlorine concentration, rinse time, etc.) to determine the most effective conditions. The original washing line consisted of 3 baths (100 ppm chlorine water dip, water rinse, and water rinse), each with a capacity of 100 L of tap water and 5 kg of salad. First, the salad samples were washed with 100 ppm of sodium hypochlorite solution for various dip times (3, 6, 9, 12 min); however, only a 1 log- or less-reduction in total microbial counts was achieved in all groups and the time of chlorine water dip was not a significant factor in reducing the microbial hazard. When another water bath was added before the chlorine water dip (4-bath washing), a 2 log-reduction in total microbial counts was achieved. This result suggested the importance of pre-dipping salad materials in water before chlorine treatment to reduce the organic load on the surface of the vegetables. Coliforms were not detected at all after washing. As the concentration of chlorine $(50{\sim}150\;ppm)$ and rinse time $(0.5{\sim}2\;min)$ increased, greater microbial reduction was achieved; however, physical damage of the salad was observed. Finally, the optimum washing conditions for salad were determined as 3 min-water dip, 3 min-chlorine (100 ppm) dip, 2 min-rinse, and 2 min-rinse.

The Effects of Health Promotion Behavior of Shifting Nurses' on the Health Conditions (교대근무 간호사의 건강증진행위가 건강상태에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this research was to analyze the health promotion behavior of shifting nurses' and its effects on their health conditions. The survey was performed for 357 nurses who worked in general hospital during July 2006. The results for behavior of health promotion and health conditions were as follow; Better health conditions of shifting nurses' on the aspects of physical status, the younger age, a fewer night duties in a month, more regular menstruation cycles and married rather than un-married, they were in better health conditions(p<0.05). In conclusion, in spite of shift works, the efforts for health promotions improved health conditions. It is necessary to set up the systems for minimizing obstacles of health promotions.

  • Background: The type of payment is one of the important factors that has an effect on the health of employees, as a basic working condition. In the conventional research field of occupational safety and health, only the physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic factors are treated as the main hazardous factors. Managerial factors and basic working conditions such as working hours and the type of payment are neglected. This paper aimed to investigate the association of the type of payment and the exposure to the various hazardous factors as an heuristic study. Methods: The third Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) by the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute in 2011 was used for this study. Among the total sample of 50,032 economically active persons, 34,788 employees were considered for analysis. This study examined the relation between the three types of payment such as basic fixed salary and wage, piece rate, and extra payment for bad and dangerous working conditions and exposure to hazardous factors like vibration, noise, temperature, chemical contact, and working at very high speeds. Multivariate regression analysis was used to measure the effect of the type of payment on working hours exposed to hazards. Results: The result showed that the proportion of employees with a basic fixed salary was 94.5%, the proportion with piece rates was 38.6%, and the proportion who received extra payment for hazardous working conditions was 11.7%. Conclusion: The piece rate was associated with exposure to working with tight deadlines and stressful jobs. This study had some limitations because KWCS was a cross-sectional survey.

  • Among various risk factors that need managing in large scale complex infrastructure projects, geotechnical risk is one of the most prominent factor particularly for underground works like tunnels. Uncertainties in soil conditions cannot be avoided 100% even after extensive geotechnical investigations. Therefore, underground works face large delays and cost overrun especially for hydropower projects in developing countries. Its uncertainty ex ante and ex post directly cause increased transaction cost in terms of contract administration, claims, variation orders and disputes. It also reduces trust and increases opportunistic behaviors due to asymmetric information between the parties. Subsequently, parties are spending more time on claim management rather than handling the project execution. Traditional project management tools are becoming less effective under these conditions. FIDIC published the Conditions of Contract for Underground Works wherein a Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) sets out the allocation of risks between the parties for subsurface physical conditions determining the foreseeable and unforeseeable conditions. At the same time, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is being adopted for efficient design, quality control and cost management. In this study, soil classification along the tunnel alignment for on-going hydropower projects is modelled in the virtual environment of Autodesk Revit (2024). The actual soil encountered along the tunnel during construction stage can be compared with the baseline conditions. In addition, BIM serves as a central source providing symmetric information to the Parties to develop an environment of trust and coordination. It is anticipated that these tools will improve the project management skills for underground works through minimizing the opportunistic behavior and transaction cost.

Effects of Mixing Conditions on the Production of Microbial Cellulose by Acetobacter xylinum

  • Microbial cellulose has many potential applications due to its excellent physical properties. The production of cellulose from Acetobacter xylinum in submerged culture is, however, beset with numerous problems. The most difficult one has been the appearance of negative mutants under shaking culture conditions, which is deficient of cellulose producing ability. Thus genetic instability of Acetobacter xylinum under shaking culture condition made developing a stable mutant major research interest in recent years. To find a proper type of bioreactor for the production of microbial cellulose, several production systems were developed. Using a reactor system with planar type impeller with bottoms sparging system, it was possible to produce 5 g/L microbial cellulose without generating cellulose minus mutants, which is comparable to that of static culture system.

  • There is no compulsory administration on the facility status for silver medical welfare facilities under the current legal regulations based on the welfare law of the aged nor is there standardized space allotment conditions that considered the physical psychological and pathological characteristics of the aged. Hence, welfare facilities are presently being constructed under general architectural laws. (Ed- paragraphs combined here) Therefore, standardized space allotment conditions should be planned soon for the aged in welfare facilities. (Ed- paragraphs combined here) In this study we examined the situation of space allotment through both blueprint analysis and interview with building supervisors. However, in future studies, we will focus on space insufficiency situations and the needs of the aged residents in welfare facilities.

Phase Shifts of Bound State Waves Scattered at Classical Turning Points: Morse Potential

  • The analytical transfer matrix method suggests a new quantization condition for calculating bound state eigenenergies exactly. In the quantization condition, the phase shifts of bound state wave functions scattered at classical turning points are explicitly introduced. We calculate the phase shifts of eigenfunctions of the Morse potential with various boundary conditions in order to understand the physical meaning of phase shifts. The Morse potential is known to adequately describe the interaction energy between two atoms and, therefore, it is frequently used to determine the vibrational energy levels of diatomic molecules. The variation of Morse potential eigenenergies influenced upon by changing boundary conditions is also investigated.

  • The optimum conditions for the most effective precipitate of surfactant complex of sodium alkylsulfate with cetylpyridinium chloride were studied in the aqueous solution. The parameters such as the alkyl chain length of anionic surfactants, molar ratio of two surfactants, temperature and the concentration of added NaCl in the aqueous solution were correlatively studied for the productivity of the precipitate formation. By the productivity, the optimum conditions to produce complex of anionic surfactant with cationic surfactant were the longer alkyl chain, equivalent molar ratio between anionic and cationic surfactants, 0 $^{\circ}C$ and 1.5 M NaCl.

  • The highly c-axis oriented zinc oxide thin films were deposited on Sapphire(0001) substrates by reactive RF magnetron sputtering. The characteristics of zinc oxide thin films on RF power, substrate-target distance, and substrate temperature were investigated by XRD, SEM and EDX analyses. The physical characteristics of zinc oxide thin films changed with various deposition conditions. The higher substrate temperatures were, The better crystallinity of zinc oxide thin films. The highly c-axis oriented zinc oxide thin films were obtained at sputter pressure 5mTorr, rf power 200W, substrate temperature 350.deg. C, substrate-target distance 5.5cm. In these conditions, the resistivity of zinc oxide thin films deposited on pt/sapphire was 12.196*10$^{9}$ [.ohm.cm].

Effects of Substrate Temperature and Sputter Gas on the Physical Characteristics, Chemical Composition and Preferred Orientation of ZnO Thin Films (기판온도 및 스퍼터가스에 따른 ZnO 박막의 우선배향성, 화학조성, 물리적특성 변화)

  • ZnO thin films were prepared by rf-magnetron sputter at various conditions. Crystallinity, microstructure, chemical composition, and optical composition, and optical properties of the films were investigated as functions of substrate temperature (R. T.-50$0^{\circ}C$) an sputter gas (O2/Ar=0-50%). ZnO thin films grown at 50$0^{\circ}C$ with sputter gas of pure argon as well as at R. T. with sputter gas of a mixture of argon & oxygen(O2/Ar=2%) exhibit a strong tendency of (002) preferred orientation, compared with a considerable random orientation at the other conditions. The thin films with (002) preferred orientation has a chemical stoichiometry of Zn/O-1.01, a band gap of 3.3eV, and a packing density of 98% respectively.
