Study of different flexible aeration tube diffusers: Characterization and oxygen transfer performance

  • The research aims to study the different flexible rubber tube diffusers used in urban wastewater treatment processes and aquaculture systems. The experiment was conducted in small-scale aeration tank with different physical properties of the tubes that were used as aerators. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient ($k_La$), oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE) and aeration efficiency (AE) were measured and determined to compare the diffusers. Moreover, the bubble hydrodynamic parameters were analyzed in terms of bubble diameter ($d_B$) and rising velocity ($U_B$) by a high speed camera (2,000 frames/s). Then the interfacial area (a) and liquid-side mass transfer coefficient ($k_L$) can be calculated. The physical properties (tube wall thickness, tensile strength, orifice size, hardness and elongation) have been proven to be the key factor that controls the performance (kLa and OTE). The effects of hardness and elongation on bubble formation, orifice size and a-area were clearly proved. It is not necessary to generate too much fine bubbles to increase the a-area: this relates to high power consumption and the decrease of the kL. Finally, the wall thickness, elongation and hardness associated of the flexible tube diffuser (tube No. 12) were concluded, to be the suitable properties for practically producing, in this research.

국소적 위상기반 어파인 모델을 이용한 강인한 카메라 움직임 추정 (Robust Estimation of Camera Motion Using A Local Phase Based Affine Model)

  • 동영상에서 시공간상 일정한 위상을 갖는 윤곽선을 정합시켜 물리적 공간에서의 동일한 위치를 추적하는 방법은 명암이 일정한 윤곽선을 정합시키거나 일정한 명암을 전제로 추적하는 방법에 비해 정확성이 높고 조명조건에 대해 안정된 특성이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 성질을 이용하여 조명변화와 노이즈에 강인하게 카메라의 움직임을 추정하는 기법을 소개한다. 우선, 가버 필터뱅크를 사용하여 공간적으로 여과된 연속영상으로부터 계산된 위상의 크기를 기반으로 필터의 방향과 수직인 곳의 광류를 구한 후, 최소제곱법을 적용하여 어파인 모델에 상응하는 카메라의 움직임 파라미터를 구한다. 실험을 통하여 이러한 방법은 조명조건의 변화를 야기하는 디스플레이 기기를 피사체로 하여 카메라의 위치변화를 추정하는 방식의 영상기반 포인팅 디바이스에도 적용될 수 있음을 보인다.

횡단가스 유동에 분사되는 액체제트의 분무특성 (Characteristic of Liquid Jet in Subsonic Cross-flow)

  • The present study has numerically and experimentally investigated the spray behavior of liquid jet injected in subsonic cross-flow. The corresponding spray characteristics are correlated with jet operating parameters. The spray dynamics are known to be distinctly different in the three regimes: the column, the ligament and the droplet regimes. The behaviors of column, penetration and breakup of liquid jet have been studied. Numerical and physical models are base on a modified KIVA code. The primary atomization is represented by a wave model base on the KH(Kelvin-Helmholtz) instability that is generated by a high interface relative velocity between the liquid and gas flows. In odor to capture the spray trajectory, CCD camera has been utilized. Numerical and experimental results indicate that the breakup point is delayed by increasing gas momentum ratio and the penetration decreases by increasing Weber number.

Photometric Observations of the Contact Binary System V523 Cassiopeiae

  • A total of 583 observations (193 in ${\Delta}b$, 190 in ${\Delta}v$, 200 in ${\Delta}r$) for V523 Cas was made on 9 nights from September to December in 2008 using the 100 cm telescope with 2K CCD camera of the Chungbuk National University Observatory. With our data BVR light curves were constructed and 9 times of minimum light were determined. We also obtained physical parameters of the V523 Cas system by analysis of the BVR light curves using the Wilson-Devinney code.

경동식 중력주조법에 의한 주조결함 제어 (Control of the Casting Defects in the Gravity Tilt Pour Casting Process)

  • Gravity tilt pour casting can effectively guarantee the reduction of various casting defects by controlling the rotation speed and the tilting angle of the mold during tilt pouring. The relationship between casting process parameters and the soundness of castings has been investigated in order to determine the optimum process variables in the gravity tilt pour casting process. In order to evaluate the effect of rotation speed on mold filling patterns, a video camera was employed to visualize the in-situ fluid flow behavior of the molten metal, and the relevant fluid velocity was also estimated. X-ray and mechanical tests were also performed to evaluate the effect of fluid velocity on casting quality. With the rotation speed lower than 0.5 r.p.m., which is nearly corresponding to the critical velocity of stability in the fluid flow, sound castings were obtained without having any casting defects. It can be concluded that the gravity tilt pour casting process is an effective process for manufacturing sound casting products with enhanced physical and mechanical properties.

키위나무의 바람에 대한 특성연구 (Basic characteristics of wind-blown kiwifruit vines)

  • Kiwifruit vines with broad leaves are easily torn or shed by high-speed wind. In this study, the threshold wind speed at which a cane is broken was investigated experimentally with varying physical parameters of a kiwifruit vine under two different ABL (atmospheric boundary layer) conditions. In addition, the temporal variation of wind-blown young canes was visualized using a high-speed camera. The average threshold wind speeds for ABL types A and B are about 20.5 m/s and 18.9 m/s, respectively. A wind-blown young cane takes periodic up-and-down motion when it is broken off. The mean motion frequency of young canes of the kiwifruit vines was found to be about 4.5Hz.

Dynamics in Carom and Three Cushion Billiards

  • This paper presents the analysis results of dynamics in the billiards game within the frame­work of rigid-body mechanics and a numerical simulation program. The friction exists between the ball and the table bed as well as between the ball and the rail. There are three parts in the dynamic behavior of the ball on the table bed; motion of the ball on the table bed, collision between balls, and collision between the ball and the cushion. During the development of the simulation program, the dynamics problems such as rolling motion and three-dimensional frictional impact motion have been analyzed in detail. The theoretical issues are implemented into a viable graphic simulation program and its efficacy is demonstrated through the experi­mental validation of the billiards game. The resulting analysis results are verified quantitatively and qualitatively using high-speed video camera. Through the experimental tests, it was found that the physical parameters such as coefficients of restitution and friction vary according to the motion variables and corresponding empirical formulations were developed. The simulation and experimental results agree well.

Infrared-Visible Photometric Analyses of Core-collapse Supernovae and Supernova Dust Formation

  • We present multiband photometric analyses of 10 core-collapse supernovae in the near-infrared and visible wavebands. Our infrared data is from observations of the supernovae using the Wide Field Infrared Camera at the Palomar 5-m telescope as part of the Caltech Core-Collapse Supernova Program, while we obtain the visible data from publicly available data base. By fitting the broadband spectral energy distribution with a black body and, when necessary, modified black body component, we estimate physical parameters of the supernovae more accurately and also conduct a systematic investigation of when the supernovae show any indication of dust formation.

  • In this paper, we investigated physical characteristics of an artificial supercavity generated behind an axisymmetric cavitator. Experiments for the same model were carried out at two different cavitation tunnels of the Chungnam National University and the University of Minnesota, and the results were compared and verified with each other. We measured pressures inside the cavity and observed the cavity formation by using a high-speed camera. Cavitation parameters were evaluated in considering blockage effects of the tunnel, and gravitational effects on supercavity dimensions were examined. Cavity dimensions corresponding to the unbounded cavitation number were compared. In addition, we investigated how artificial supercavitation develops according to the combination of injection positions and direction.

접촉쌍성 V523 CAS의 광도곡선 분석 (LIGHT CURVE ANALYSIS OF CONTACT BINARY SYSTEM V523 CASSIOPEIAE)

  • 보현산 천문대의 1.8m 망원경을 이용하여 1999년 10월 19일부터 21일까지 총 3일간 W UMa형 접촉쌍성 V523 Cas를 CCD 측광관측하여 총 616 (308의 ${\Delta}$b점, 308의 ${\Delta}$v점) 개의 관측점을 얻었다. 우리의 관측점으로부터 4개의 새로운 극심시각(주극심 2개, 부극심 2개)을 산출하였다. 우리가 얻은 BV 광도곡선과 Milone et al.(1985)의 시선속도곡선을 Wilson-Devinney(WD) 방법으로 흑점이 있는 경우와 없는 경우로 나누어 광도곡선의 해를 산출하였다.
