A Review of Photocatalytic Treatment for Various Air Pollutants

  • Photocatalysis is a photochemical catalytic reaction which is a highly promising tool for the environmental cleanup process. It is very effective in treatment of environmental pollutants by its unique redox property. It has wide applications in the treatment of atmospheric pollutants (e.g., nitrogen dioxide, trichloroethylene, volatile organics, hydrogen sulfide, benzene, etc) through oxidative removal and by disinfection (aeromicro flora). In this research, the fundamental aspects of photocatalysis are described with respect to the composition of catalysts, experimental conditions (e.g., temperature, duration, etc), and interfering factors (e.g., catalyst deactivation).

  • The nitrogen oxides, NO and NO2, abbreviated usually as NOx, emitted from combustion facilities such as power plants and automobiles are the typical air-pollutants causing acid rain and photochemical smog. In order to solve the NOx-related pollution problems effectively, we need efficient techniques to monitor NOx in the combustion exhausts and in environments. Development of solid-state electrochemical devices for detecting NOx is demonstrated based on various combination of solid electrolytes and auxiliary sensing materials. The object of this research is to develop various sensor performance for solid state amperometric sensor, and to test gas sensor performance manufactured. So we try to present a guidance for developing amperometric gas sensor. We concentrated on development of manufacturing process and performance test.

Synthesis, Photochemical and Photophysical Behavior of Vinyl Monomers with Donor/Acceptor Architectures and Their Polymers

  • A series of vinyl monomers and their saturated model compounds containing different chromophores were synthesized. These monomers display strong intra-molecular fluorescence quenching, their fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes are generally lower than those of their model compounds. It was found that the C=C bonds in these monomers played a key role in the intra-molecular quenching, which was confirmed by intermolecular fluorescence quenching and time-resolved fluorescence studies. On the basis of the intra-molecular quenching, a new fluorescence approach can be developed to monitor the process of the polymerization and curing of bismaleimides, which can directly reflect the C=C bond consumption during polymerization and curing.

  • The key step in a strategy for the synthesis of (+)-lactacystin involving photocyclization reaction of a cyclopenta-fused pyridinium salt has been probed by using a model substrate. Observations made in this effort led to the discovery of a highly unusual cascade process that leads to stereoselective formation of an interesting tricyclic carbamate. The results of this study are presented and discussed in the context of a (+)-lactacystin synthetic approach.

  • Diarylethene in photochromic materials was doped in organic-inorganic hybrid low-melting glasses were synthesized through a nonaqueous acid-base reaction process, which consists of network units including a small number of bridging oxides. The organic phase is a dichlorodimethylsilane while the inorganic phase is a tin(II) chloride. Diarylethene was incorporated into the glasses without any degradation of its functionality. The open form of diarylenthene, which is converted from the opening one upon UV-irradiation, is change to the closed form visible light-irradiation. The rate constant of the photochemical reaction is $31.78\times10^{-3}s^{-1}$ with 400 W UV lamp irradiation.

  • New types of lariat type crown ethers containing peptide sidearms were prepared by using a novel strategy employing single electron transfer (SET)-induced photocyclization reactions of $\alpha$-silylether terminated phthalimides. Reactions of chiral substrates in this series produced diastereomeric mixtures of crown ether products as a result of the formation of new stereogenic center generation in the photocyclization process.

  • In order to observe the pattern forming of copper plate and chemical corrosion reaction, a study on the effect of the process parameters on the formation of micro-pattern by a photochemical etching of copper plate was carried out. The results are as follows : 1) Etching rate increases as the concentration of etchant increases under the regular condition of the temperature by the increasing of diffusion rate to surface. 2) Etching rate increases as the temperature of etchant increases by the fast acting of the material delivery of diffusion to surface under the regular condition of concentration. 3) It was found that etching speed increases as the material delivery of convection rising increased when the aeration speed of etchant increases. This result was from the fact acted by the material delivery of convection rising rather than material delivery of diffusion to the surface.

Disassembly of Chlorophyll-Protein Complexes in Arabidopsis thaliana during Dark-Induced Foliar Senescence

  • The disassembly of Chl-protein complexes during dark-induced senescence (DIS) was investigated using detached third and fourthleaves of 21$\pm$1 day-old Arabidopsis thaliana. Although Chl content decreased linearly after 1 d, a significant decrease of photochemical effeciency (Fv/Fm) was observed after 2 d. In experiments using native green gel electrophoresis of Chl-protein complexes combined with additional two-dimensional SDS-PAGE analysis, we could observe the degradation of both photosystems after 2 d. Although light-harvesting complex(LHC) for PSI (LHCI) was degraded first in PSI complex, small PSII apoproteins including CP47/CP43 and D1/D2 apoproteins were degraded first in PSII complexes. LHC for PSII (LHCII) trimers were stable until 4 d. The level of LHCII monomers was increased until 3 and decreased thereafter, resulting in the increase of free pigments. These results suggest that the disassembly process of PSI is different from that of PSII.

Detection System for Sub-micrometer Defects of a Photo-mask Using On-axis Interference between Reflected and Scattered Lights

  • In the process of lithography using ultra violet light sources for semiconductor devices, most of defects are made by sub-micrometer pollutants generated at photochemical reactions. We proposed and developed a novel vibration-insensitive on-axis interferometer with a sub-micrometer lateral resolution by using the interference between two beams: one scattered from defects and the other reflected from a reference area without defects. The proposed system was successfully demonstrated to detect a small Al defect of 0.5 ${\mu}m$ diameter within the inspection time of less than 30 minutes over the area of the photo-mask which is 6 inch by 6 inch square.
