Hollow or bumpy ZnO structures with micrometer-size features have been investigated as photocatalysts for water purification due to their high surface area available for reaction with harmful organic molecules and relatively large size for easy separation after finishing the photocatalytic reaction. In this study, selective synthesis of ZnO hollow or crumpled microspheres was performed using a simple and versatile ultrasonic spray pyrolysis process with various zinc precursors. The morphologies, phases, specific surface areas, and optical properties of the microspheres were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, the mechanism underlying the formation of different morphologies and their photocatalytic activities were systematically investigated.
TiO$_2$/Fe$_2$O$_3$composite thin films were prepared on common glass substrates by sol-gel processing and dip-drawing method. The effect of Fe$_2$O$_3$content on the photocatalytic and hydrophilic properties of composite films was studied. The results indicate that the photocatalytic activities of composite TiO$_2$films are superior to that of pure TiO$_2$film, and the film containing 0.5% Fe$_2$O$_3$has the best photocatalytic activity. The hydrophilicity is difference with variant Fe$_2$O$_3$content, the films containing 0.05% ~0.1% Fe$_2$O$_3$have the best hydrophilicity and their contact angles are 0。.
Nanosized titania sol has been produced by the controlled hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide(TTIP) in sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate(AOT) reverse micelles. The physical properties, such as crystallite size and crystallinity according to R ratio have been investigated by FT-IR, XRD and UV-DRS. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation of bromate has been studied by using batch reactor in the presence of UV light in order to compare the photocatalytic activity of prepared nanosized titania. It is shown that the anatase structure appears in the 300~$600^{\circ}C$ calcination temperature range and the formation of anatase into rutile starts above $700^{\circ}C$. The crystallite size increases with increasing R ratio. In the photocatalytic degradation of bromate, the photocatalytic decomposition of bromate shows the decomposition rate increases with decreasing initial concentration of bromate and with increasing intensity of light.
$La/TiO_2$ - graphene composites were synthesized in this study, and applied to the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV-visible light irradiation. X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis demonstrated that $La/TiO_2$ nanoparticles were well distributed on the surface of graphene, and formed the heterostructure of $La/TiO_2$-graphene. Compared to the pure $TiO_2$, $La/TiO_2$-graphene composites displayed much higher photocatalytic activities in RhB degradation under UV-visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic data of $La/TiO_2$-graphene composites exhibit extended light absorption in the visible light region, and possess better charge separation capability than that of pure $TiO_2$. The high photocatalytic activity was attributed to the composite's high adsorptivity, extended light absorption, and increased charge separation efficiency, due to the excellent electrical properties of graphene, and the large surface contact between graphene and $La/TiO_2$ nanoparticles.
ZnS powder was synthesized using a relatively facile and convenient glycothermal method at various reaction temperatures. ZnS was successfully synthesized at temperatures as low as $125^{\circ}C$ using zinc acetate and thiourea as raw materials, and diethylene glycol as the solvent. No mineralizers or precipitation processes were used in the fabrication, which suggests that the spherical ZnS powders were directly prepared in the glycothermal method. The phase composition, morphology, and optical properties of the prepared ZnS powders were characterized using XRD, FE-SEM, and UV-vis measurements. The prepared ZnS powders had a zinc blende structure and showed average primary particles with diameters of approximately 20~30 nm, calculated from the XRD peak width. All of the powders consisted of aggregated secondary powders with spherical morphology and a size of approximately $0.1{\sim}0.5{\mu}m$; these powders contained many small primary nanopowders. The as-prepared ZnS exhibited strong photo absorption in the UV region, and a red-shift in the optical absorption spectra due to the improvement in powder size and crystallinity with increasing reaction temperature. The effects of the reaction temperature on the photocatalytic properties of the ZnS powders were investigated. The photocatalytic properties of the as-synthesized ZnS powders were evaluated according to the removal degree of methyl orange (MO) under UV irradiation (${\lambda}=365nm$). It was found that the ZnS powder prepared at above $175^{\circ}C$ exhibited the highest photocatalytic degradation, with nearly 95 % of MO decomposed through the mediation of photo-generated hydroxyl radicals after irradiation for 60 min. These results suggest that the ZnS powders could potentially be applicable as photocatalysts for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants.

This study describes the development of graphene-$TiO_2$ conjugates for the enhancement of the photocatalytic efficiency of $TiO_2$. Graphene-based hybrid nanomaterials have attracted considerable attention because of the unique and advantageous properties of graphene. In the proposed hybrid nanomaterial, graphene serves as an electron acceptor to ensure fast charge transfer. Effective charge separation can, therefore, be achieved to slow down electron-hole recombination. This results in an enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$. In addition, increased adsorption and interactions with the adsorbed reagents also lead to an improvement in the photocatalytic activity of graphene-$TiO_2$ hybrid nanomaterials. The acquired result is encouraging in that the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ was initiated using visible light (630 nm) instead of the typical UV light.
Fe-AC/Ti$O_2$ photocatalysts were prepared by a sol-gel method. The photocatalytic properties of Fe-AC/Ti$O_2$ photocatalysts for the purification of water have been investigated. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area (BET), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by the photocatalytic oxidation of methylene blue (MB) solution. It was found that the prepared Fe-AC/Ti$O_2$ composites have an excellent photocatalytic under visible light irradiation. A small amount of Fe ions in the AC/Ti$O_2$ composites could obviously enhance their photocatalytic activity. The high activities of the Fe-AC/Ti$O_2$ composites could be attributed to the results of the synergetic effects of the enhancement of the Fe element, the photocatalytic activity of Ti$O_2$, and the adsorption of AC.
Composites of P25 $TiO_2$ and hexagonal $WO_3$ nanorods are synthesized through ball-milling in order to study photocatalytic properties. Various composites of $TiO_2/WO_3$ are prepared by controlling the weight percentages (wt%) of $WO_3$, in the range of 1-30 wt%, and milling time to investigate the effects of the composition ratio on the photocatalytic properties. Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy are performed to characterize the structure, shape and size of the synthesized composites of $TiO_2/WO_3$. Methylene blue is used as a test dye to analyze the photocatalytic properties of the synthesized composite material. The photocatalytic activity shows that the decomposition efficiency of the dye due to the photocatalytic effect is the highest in the $TiO_2/WO_3$ (3 wt%) composite, and the catalytic efficiency decreases sharply when the amount of $WO_3$ is further increased. As the amount of $WO_3$ added increases, dye-removal by adsorption occurs during centrifugation, instead of the decomposition of dyes by photocatalysts. Finally, $TiO_2/WO_3$ (3 wt%) composites are synthesized with various milling times. Experimental results show that the milling time has the best catalytic efficiency at 30 min, after which it gradually decreases. There is no significant change after 1 hour.

Zinc oxide is metal oxide semiconductor with the 3.37 eV bandgap energy. Zinc oxide is very attractive materials for many application fields. Zinc Oxide has many advantages such as high conductivity and good transmittance in visible region. Also it is cheaper than other semiconductor materials such as indium tin oxide (ITO). Therefore, ZnO is alternative material for ITO. ZnO is attracting attention for its application to transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films, surface acoustic wave (SAW), films bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR), piezoelectric materials, gas-sensing, solar cells and photocatalyst. In this study, we synthesized ZnO nanoparticles and defined their physical and chemical properties. Also we studied about the application of ZnO nanoparticles as a photocatalyst and try to find a enhancement photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanorticles.. We synthesized ZnO nanoparticles using spray-pyrolysis method and defined the physical and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles in experiment I. When the ZnO are exposed to UV light, reduction and oxidation(REDOX) reaction will occur on the ZnO surface and generate ${O_2}^-$ and OH radicals. These powerful oxidizing agents are proven to be effective in decomposition of the harmful organic materials and convert them into $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. Therefore, we investigated that the photocatalytic activity was increased through the surface modification of synthesized ZnO nanoparticles. In experiment II, we studied on the stability of ZnO nanoparticles in water. It is well known that ZnO is unstable in water in comparison with $TiO_2$. $Zn(OH)_2$ was formed at the ZnO surface and ZnO become inactive as a photocatalyst when ZnO is present in the solution. Therefore, we prepared synthesized ZnO nanoparticles that were immersed in the water and dried in the oven. After that, we measured photocatalytic activities of prepared samples and find the cause of their photocatalytic activity changes.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most powerful materials for purifying organic pollutants using photocatalytic activity. In this study, we have introduced a novel method to design highly photoreactive flexible 3 dimensional (3D) ZnO nanocomposite [F-ZnO-m (m: reaction time, min)] by electrospinning and simple-step ZnO growth processing (one-step ZnO seed coating/growth processing). Significantly, the F-ZnO-m could be a new platform (or candidate) as a photocatalytic technology for both morphology control and large-area production. The highest photocatalytic degradation rate ([k]) was observed for F-ZnO-m at 2.552 h-1, which was 8.1 times higher than that of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs; [k] = 0.316 h-1). The enhanced photocatalytic activity of F-ZnO-m may be attributed to factors such as large surface area. The F-ZnO-m is highly recyclable and retained 98.6% of the initial decolorization rate after fifteen cycles. Interestingly, the F-ZnO-m samples show very strong antibacterial properties against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) after exposure to UV-light for 30 min. The antibacterial properties of F-ZnO-m samples are more effective than those of ZnO NPs. More than 96.6% of the E. coli is sterilized after ten cycles. These results indicate that F-ZnO-m samples might have utility in several promising applications such as highly efficient water/air treatment and inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms.
