  • Photo responsive polymer(PRP) is well known for its photo deformation under UV light, and goes back to its original shape in visible light due to the photoisomerization of the azobenzene inside the PRP. In this paper, dynamic study of the vibration in PRP is discussed. In order to predict photo-deformation of the PRP a multiscale modeling is introduced which covers quantum level photo excitation, microscopic morphology, and macroscopic deformation of the PRP. A simple 1D beam model is introduced to model dynamic bending behavior of the PRP. Through fast Fourious transformation analysis, we identify that vibration frequency of the PRP can be controlled by light polarization angle.

  • One of the approaches to obtain functional polymer is polymerization of a monomer having two functional groups. Although polymerization of a monomer having two different types of functional group is general, the author has been interested in the polymerization of a monomer having two similar types of functional group. This work shows the preparation and selective polymerization of 4-methylene-2-styryl-1,3-dioxolane having two similar reactive double bonds via cationic polymerization at ambient temperature. Cationic ring-opening polymerization of 4-methylene-2-styryl-1,3-dioxolane using benzylsulfonium salt as a photo-initiator quantitatively afforded high molecular weight of poly(keto-ether).

  • We synthesised a novel photo-alignment material of PCEMA (poly(cinnamolyethyl methacrylate)) on photo-dimerization reaction. Next we investigated the electro-optical (EO) characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with linearly polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on PCEHA surface. The excellent voltage-transmittance characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD on PCEMA surface were obtained. The threshold voltage of photo-aligned TN-LCD decreases with increasing the UV light irradiation time on PCEMA surface. Also, the response time of photo-aligned TN-LCD on PCEMA surface is almost the same as rubbing-aligned TN-LCD.

  • Control of shape/volume, mechanical, optical, electrical, and chemical switching of materials by external stimuli such as light, temperature, pH, electric field, and pressure has attracted great attention. Among these materials, photo-responsive materials containing photochromic compounds such as azobenzene, spiropyran, and cinnamic acid groups have been the subject of intense interest in recent years. In this review, we describe the recent progress in the area of azobenzene containing polymer materials that can convert light energy into mechanical energy directly. Especially we focus our attention on light-driven actuators such as artificial muscle, motor, and valve. We summarize the photomechanical effects in liquid crystal elastomer, amorphous polymer, monolayer, and supramolecules containing azobenzene, respectively.

  • To modify and strengthen the properties of PHEMA hydrogel, composite hydrogels containing varying amounts of a Pluronic (PEO-PPO-PEO) component were synthesized by bulk polymerization of HEMA in the presence of Pluronic dimethacrylate under mild photo initiating conditions. The effects of the Pluronic component on gel properties were investigated by measuring the degree of swelling with its temperature responsive behavior, the mechanical properties, and the morphology of the composite hydrogels. With increased Pluronic content, the modified PHEMA hydrogels exhibited an increase in the degree of swelling, and the swelling showed an enhanced thermo-responsive behavior that was completely reversible. In addition, improved mechanical strength and the development of a microporous gel morphology were observed in hydrogels containing Pluronic.

  • A 2D grid-like (4, 4)-connected topology coordination polymer, $[Co(BTA)_2(H_2O)_2]_n$ (1), where HBTA = 2-(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)acetic acid, has been synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS). X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that 1 displays octahedral metal centers with secondary building units (SBUs) [$Co(BTA)_2(H_2O)_2$] bridged by the $BTA^-$ ligands. In the crystal, the 2D supramolecular architecture is further supported by $O-H{\cdots}O$, $O-H{\cdots}N$, $C-H{\cdots}O$ hydrogen bonds and ${\pi}{\cdots}{\pi}$ stacking interactions. The SPS of polymer 1 indicates that there are positive response bands in the range of 300-600 nm showing photo-electric conversion properties. There are good relationships between SPS and UV-Vis spectra.

  • Four different molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared using resveratrol as the template, methacrylic acid (MAA) or acrylamide (AA) as functional monomers, 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator, and thermo- or photo-induced polymerization. The ability of the different polymers to rebind selectively not only the template but also other phenols was evaluated. In parallel, the influence of the different templates and functional monomers used during polymer syntheses on the performance of the obtained MIPs was also studied through different rebinding experiments. The binding ability and selectivity of the polymer were studied by static balance method and Scatchard analysis. It was concluded that AA-based polymer by photo-induced polymerization presents the best properties to be used as a selective absorbent for the extraction of resveratrol.

  • An electrochemically and photochemically polymerizable monomer, 2-((2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b] [1,4]dioxin-2-yl)methoxy)ethyl methacrylate (EDOT-EMA), was explored for patterning of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) via side chain cross-linking. The polymer from EDOT-EMA was deposited electrochemically to produce polymeric EDOT (PEDOT-EMA), which was directly photo-patterned by UV light as the side EMA groups of PEDOT-EMA were polymerized to give cross-linked EMA (PEDOT-PEMA). Absorption and FTIR studies of the UV-exposed film (PEDOT-PEMA) indicated that the photo-patterning mainly originated from the photo cross-linking of the methacrylates in the side-chain. After irradiation of the film, the conductivity of the irradiated area decreased from $5.6{\times}10^{-3}$ S/cm to $7.2{\times}10^{-4}$ S/cm, possibly due to bending of the conductive PEDOT channel as a result of the side chain cross-linking. The patterned film was applied to a solid state electrochromic (EC) cell to obtain micro-patterned EC cells with lines up to 5 ${\mu}m$ wide.

  • Natural DNAs in dry state, i.e., A-DNAs, when intercalated with low levels of stable organic free radicals or complexed with low levels of Au(III), are attracted at room temperature to commercial magnets, whereas those containing high levels of intercalators or Au(III) are not. This surprising observation is explained by the EPR spectra and SQUID measurement of magnetization of the modified DNAs. It is conjectured that A-DNAs are morphologically heterogeneous containing ordered and disordered regions. The ordered regions appear to strongly mediate magnetic interactions between spins through their ${\pi}_z$-stacked structures. When the modified DNAs are wet or hydrated, they behave diamagnetically.
