  • In underwater acoustic multipath channel, a performance of underwater acoustic (UWA) communication systems is affected by dynamic variation of boundary and high temporal and spatial variability of the channel conditions. Time and spatial variations of UWA channel induce a carrier frequency offset (CFO) since a phase and a frequency of received signal mismatch with a transmitting signal. Therefore, a performance of a phase shift keying underwater acoustic communication system is degraded. In this study, we have analyzed a performance of CFO estimation and compensation using a phase code in time and spatial variation channel. A constant amplitude zero autocorrelation (CAZAC) signal is applied as a phase code signal and its performance is evaluated in water tank. The bit error rate of a quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) system with a phase code is improved about 4 to 10 times better than that without a phase code.

  • A particular optical receiver has its own optical receiver modes (ORMs) determined by its optical and electrical filters. Superposing the ORM waveforms at the transmitter, we can generate a new type of optical signals, called ORM signals. After optical detection, they produce pre-specified voltage waveforms accurately, which is advantageous for digital signal processing. Assuming a Gaussian optical receiver, where the optical and electrical filters are Gaussian, we illustrate various phase-shift keying ORM signals using two ORMs by changing their relative phase. We also illustrate multi-level ORM signal patterns using two or more ORMs.

  • Spread spectrum communications have increased interest due to their immunity to channel fading and low probability of intercept. One of the limitations of the traditional digital spread spectrum systems is the need for spreading code synchronization. Chaotic communication is the analogue alternative of digital spread spectrum systems beside some extra features like simple transceiver structures. In this paper, This paper was used instead of the digital modulation and demodulation carriers for use in the chaotic signal in a digital communication system among the chaotic modulation schemes, the Differential Chaos Shift Keying(DCSK) is the most efficient one because its demodulator detects the data without the need to chaotic signal phase recovery. Also Implementation of Differential Chaos Shift Keying Communication System Using Matlab/Simulink and the receiver con decode the binary information sent by the transmitter, performance curves of DCSK are given in terms of bit-error probability versus signal to noise ratio with spreading factor as a parameter and we compare it to BPSK modulation.

  • A novel optical hybrid device that doubles the multilevel demodulation resolution by adding the optical interferometer with a waveguide crossover is proposed, theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified. We report two types of all-passive phase control schemes that will be referred to as a phase compensation scheme and a phase optimization scheme. We also apply the proposed phase control schemes to a 45° optical hybrid consisting of two parallel 90° optical hybrids together with the proposed phase control scheme for demodulating 8-level differential phase shift keying optical signals. Octagonal phase response with low wavelength sensitive excess loss of <0.8 dB over 31-nm-wide spectral range will be demonstrated in the InP-based material platform.

  • The tone reservation (TR) scheme is an attractive method to reduce peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in the filter bank multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC-OQAM) systems. However, the high PAPR of FBMC signal will severely degrades system performance. To address this issue, a cyclic shift based TR (CS-TR) scheme with embedding side information (SI) is proposed to reduce the PAPR of FBMC signals. At the transmitter, four candidate signals are first generated based on cyclic shift of the output of inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT), and the SI of the selected signal with minimum peak power among the four candidate signals is embedded in sparse symbols with quadrature phase-shift keying constellation. Then, the TR weighted by optimal scaling factor is employed to further reduce PAPR of the selected signal. At the receiver, a reliable SI detector is presented by determining the phase rotation of SI embedding symbols, and the transmitted data blocks can be correctly demodulated according to the detected SI. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the existing TR schemes in both PAPR reduction and bit error rate (BER) performances. In addition, the proposed scheme with detected SI can achieve the same BER performance compared to the one with perfect SI.

  • Multipath makes clear message transfer difficult in the underwater communication. To solve this problem, we propose a new method producing proper MFSP (Modulation Frequency Shift Period) which could be obtained by calculating time delay caused by different path from a transmitter to a receiver. At the transmitter end, messages were divided according to the size of the MFSP and transmitted accordingly alternating Frequency. At the receiver end, the received messages were demodulated in order to recover the original message by the adaptive BISMO algorithm which is constructed at the algorithm design stage. Adaptive MFSP and estimated BER (Bit Error Rate) were calculated through simulation test.

  • This paper proposes a novel decision feedback differential phase detection (DF-DPD) for M-ary DPSK. A conventional differential phase detection method for M-ary Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) can simplify the receiver architecture. However, it possesses a poorer bit error rate (BER) performance than coherent detection because of the prior noisy phase sample. Multiple-symbol differential detection methods, such as maximum likelihood differential phase detection, Viterbi-DPD, and DF-DPD using L-1 previous detected symbols, have attempted to improve BER performance. As the detection length, L, increases, the BER performance of the DF-DPD improves but the complexity of the architecture increases dramatically. This paper proposes a simplified DF-DPD architecture replacing the conventional delay and additional architecture with an accumulator. The proposed architecture also improves BER performance by minimizing the current differential phase noise through the accumulation of previous differential phase noise samples. The simulation results show that the BER performance of the proposed architecture approaches that of a coherent detection with differential decoding.

  • In multi-robot systems, ultrasonic sensors are widely used for localization and/or obstacle detection. However, conventional ultrasonic sensors have a drawback, that is, the interference problem among ultrasonic transmitters. There are some previous studies to avoid interferences, such as TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access). In multiple autonomous mobile robots systems, the Doppler-effect has to be considered because ultrasonic transceivers are attached to the moving robots. To overcome this problem, we find out the ASK (Amplitude Shift Keying)-CDMA technique is more robust to the Doppler-effect than the BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying)-CDMA technique. In this paper, we propose a new code-expression method and a Monte-Carlo based algorithm that optimizes the ultrasonic code combination in the ASK-CDMA ultrasonic system. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the performance of the ultrasonic multiple accessing capacity in the ASK-CDMA ultrasonic system.

  • This paper is concerned with an improvement on IFFT (inverse fast Fourier transform) and FFT based baseband digital implementation algorithm for BPSK (binary phase shift keying)-modulated MC-CDMA (multicarrier-code division multiple access) systems, that is functionally equivalent to the conventional implementation algorithm, while reducing computational complexity and bandwidth requirement. We also derive an equalizer structure for the proposed implementation algorithm. The proposed algorithm is based on a variant of FFT algorithm that utilizes a N/2-point FFT/IFFT for simultaneous transformation and reconstruction of two N/2-point real signals. The computer simulations under additive white Gaussian noise channels and frequency selective fading channels using equal gain combiner and maximal ratio combiner diversities, demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, the multipath effect on underwater acoustic channel bandwidth and BFSK and BPSK bit error dependancy on channel bandwidth are analyzed. The multipath is modeled as a discrete multipath and a continuous multipath and the channel bandwidth is expressed as a function of multipath delay spread constant. Bit error characteristics on the channel bandwidth and the criteria of the multipath delay spread constant are found through the numerical simulation. The transmission bit rate of less than 100bps in the water tank which has a channel bandwidth of 100Hz, is a consistent result with the numerical simulation.
