  • In this paper, we propose and discuss about image enhancement techniques for MPEG-4. which represents very low bit-rate, content-based. and object-based hierarchical audio-visual coding standard. The proposed enhancement technique removes undesired artifacts arising in the compression procedure and increase resolution in both spatial and temporal domains. In order to remove undesired artifacts. we divide the MPEG-4 video algorithm in two parts: MPEG-2 like part and the new part. For removing artifacts caused by the first part. we adopt the conventional blocking artifacts algorithm developed for MPEG-2. On the other hand for removing artifacts caused by the second part. we provide a new degradation model. and propose the corresponding image restoration method. For increasing resolution of the MPEG-4 images, we propose a general framework of multichannel image interpolation process. which includes both spatial and temporal interpolations. As the MPEG-4 standard is under development. various sophisticated techniques are considered. but research on image enhancement techniques is relatively underestimated. By this reason. additional image enhancement techniques will become very important issue in realization phase of MPEG-4.

  • Electromagnetic (EM) waves used to send signals under seawater are normally restricted to low frequencies (f) because of sudden exponential increases of attenuation (𝛼) at higher f. The mathematics of EM wave propagation in seawater demonstrate dependence on relative permeability (𝜇r), relative permittivity (𝜀r), conductivity (𝜎), and f of transmission. Estimation of 𝜀r and 𝜎 based on the W. Ellison interpolation model was performed for averaged real-time data of temperature (T) and salinity (S) from 1955 to 2012 for all oceans with 41 088 latitude/longitude points and 101 depth points up to 5500 m. Estimation of parameters such as real and imaginary parts of 𝜀r, 𝜀r', 𝜀r", 𝜎, loss tangent (tan 𝛿), propagation velocity (Vp), phase constant (𝛽), and α contributes to absorption loss (La) for seawater channels carried out by using normal distribution fit in the 3 GHz-40 GHz f range. We also estimated total path loss (LPL) in seawater for given transmission power Pt and antenna (dipole) gain. MATLAB is the simulation tool used for analysis.

  • In this paper, the simplified design methodology for rotation of polarization plane using a square waveguide is proposed. In order to optimize the characteristics of $180^{\circ}$ polarizer operating from 14.3GHz to 14.8GHz in Ku-band, the modified mode matching method and piecewise power tower interpolation are applied to the polarizer design. The optimized results show that the frequency bandwidth in VSWR<2 has covered 500MHz in the Ku-band and phase difference between two orthogonal modes $TE_{10}$and $TE_{01}$ is $180^{\circ}{\pm}1^{\circ}$ in the range of 14.3GHz~14.8GHz. The cross polarization loss has obtained below 40dB and the insertion loss has 0.1dB in the passband. Therefore, the proposed polarizer is suitable for practical Ku-band system requiring the low VSWR and compact size.

  • The pressure fluctuation on the surface of a submerged body has been recognized as a dominant noise source. There have been many studies concerning the flow induced noise on a flat plate. However, the noise over an axisymmetric body has not been well reported. This paper addresses the way in which we have investigated the mechanism of noise generation due to an axisymmetric body. The associated experiments and signal processing methods are introduced. A 3-dimensional axisymmetric body whose length and diameter were 2 m and 10.4 cm, was prepared as a test specimen. The wall pressure on the surface of the body was measured in a large scale low noise wind tunnel at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery and Metals). To measure the wall pressure, we used two microphone arrays which were tangential and normal to the flow. Based on the measured signal, frequency-wavenumber spectrum which explains the structure of turbulence noise, was estimated. Tangential to the flow, there exists convective ridge at a relatively higher wavenumber region; this can cause spatial aliasing. To circumvent this problem, the cross spectrum was interpolated. The interpolation has been performed by unwrapping the phase and smoothing the cross spectrum. The phase unwrapping was done based on the Corcos model; the phase of cross spectrum decreases linearly with the distance between microphones. Aforementioned signal processings are possible by employing the experimental results that the estimated wavenumber spectrum quite resembles the Corcos model. We try to modify the Corcos model which is applicable to the flat plate, by altering the magnitude of cross spectrum to fit the experimental data more accurately. We proposed that this wavenumber spectrum model is suitable for the 3-dimensional axisymmetric body. Normal to the flow, there exists a little correlation between signals of different microphones. The circumferential wavenumber spectrum contains uniform power along the wavenumbers.

  • Location determination of mobile user via RSSI approach has received ample attention from researchers lately. However, it remains a challenging issue due to the complexities of RSSI signal propagation characteristics, which are easily exacerbated by the mobility of user. Hence, a segmentation-based linear spline interpolation method is proposed to cater for the dynamic fluctuation pattern of radio signal in complex environment. This optimization algorithm is proposed in addition to the current radiolocation's (CC2431, Chipcon, Norway) algorithm, which runs on IEEE802.15.4 standard. The enhancement algorithm involves four phases. First phase consists of calibration model in which RSSI values at different static locations are collected and processed to obtain the mean and standard deviation value for the predefined distance. RSSI smoothing algorithm is proposed to minimize the dynamic fluctuation of radio signal received from each reference node when the user is moving. Distances are computed using the segmentation formula obtain in the first phase. In situation where RSSI value falls in more than one segment, the ambiguity of distance is solved by probability approach. The distance probability distribution function(pdf) for each distances are computed and distance with the highest pdf at a particular RSSI is the estimated distance. Finally, with the distances obtained from each reference node, an iterative trilateration algorithm is used for position estimation. Experiment results obtained position the proposed algorithm as a viable alternative for location tracking.

  • This paper proposes a new method of mathematically modeling and computer simulating television ghosts wherein television signals that have undergone multipath fading are generated without using approximations by considering the attenuation, time delay, phase, and timing jitter between consecutive frames. Conventional methods used polynomial interpolation or complex arithmetic to take into account the ghost phase, but our method uses only real arithmetic by employing the Hilbert transform and also reduces the computation time using the FFT (fast Fourier transform) algorithm. Furthermore, it is also possible to observe the transmit waveforms in both RF and IF ranges. Various ghost patterns generated in software provide for essential data required for the development of ghost canceling algorithms, and are deemed to be very useful in analyzing the constituent blocks of the transmitter and receiver chain in television broadcasting. The development of ghost cancelers needs to be preceded by the task of mathematically modeling ghosts and their extensive computer simulations.

  • The purpose of this study is to design, implement and verify the pre-modulation filter with the variable -3dB cutoff frequency and linear phase response for bandlimiting the allocation of radio frequency bandwidth for PCM/FM transmission. For the design of this required filter, the digital FIR filter, DAC system and tuneable 2nd order LPF have been constructed and simulated according to the attenuation characteristic requirement of the amplitude frequency response by each stage. From these results, we have implemented the filter and verified the analog conversion hardware part which is composed of DAC system and tuneable 2nd order LPF for the interpolation of the discrete sequences. Especially this paper proposes and carries out the verification processes using the tone generator and the calibration procedures for more precise frequency response of the filter.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm that generates the smooth and realistic transition views from one viewpoint to another on the multi-panorama based navigation system. The proposed algorithm is composed of two steps. One is prewarping that aligns the viewing directions of two panoramic images, and the other is the bidirectional disparity morphing(BDM) that generates the intermediate scene from the aligned panoramic images. For prewarping, we compute the phase correlation between two images in order to obtain the information, such as translation, rotation, and scaling. Then we align the viewing directions of two original images using these information. Afterprewarping, we compute the block based disparity vector(DV) and smooth them using two occluding patterns. As we apply these DVs to the BDM, we can generate the elaborate intermediate scene. We make an experiment on the proposed algorithm with some real panoramic images and obtain good quality intermediate scenes.

  • In this paper, we propose a method using deep learning for high-resolution display of phase holograms. If a general interpolation method is used, the brightness of the reconstruction result is lowered, and noise and afterimages occur. To solve this problem, a hologram was trained with a neural network structure that showed good performance in the single-image super resolution (SISR). As a result, it was possible to improve the problem that occurred in the reconstruction result and increase the resolution. In addition, by adjusting the number of channels to increase performance, the result increased by more than 0.3dB in same training.

  • Metabolic analysis of biological tissues, the interventional radiology in MRT (Magnetic Resonance Treatment) and for clinical diagnoses, representation of 4-Dimensional (4D) structural information (x,y,z,t) of biological tissues is required. This paper discusses image representation techniques for those 4D MR Images. We have proposed an image reconstruction method for ultra-fast 3D MRI. It is based on image interpolation and prediction of un-acquired pictorial data in both of the real and the k-space (the acquisition domain in MRI). A 4D MR image is reconstructed from only two 3D MR images and acquired a few echo signals that are optimized by prediction of the tissue motion. This prediction can be done by the phase of acquired echo signal is proportioned to the tissue motion. On the other hand, reconstructed 4D MR images are represented as a 3D-movie by using computer graphics techniques. Rendered tissue surfaces and/or ROIs are displayed on a CRT monitor. It is represented in an arbitrary plane and/or rendered surface with their motion. As examples of the proposed representation techniques, the finger and the lung motion of healthy volunteers are demonstrated.
