Methods : A woman diagnosed with bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss has treated with Korean medical interventions(acupuncture combined with electromagnetic stimulation and pharmacoacupuncture) and threshold sound conditioning(TSC) for 20 weeks. Pure tone audiometry(PTA) was performed for the evaluation. Results : The average hearing level has improved from mild to normal level. The level of tinnitus has decreased from VAS 10 to VAS 4. Conclusions : We observed an improvement in a bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss patient's hearing and hereby suggest the possibility of Korean medical treatment and TSC's ameliorating effect on sensorineural hearing loss.

  • To determine the effect of Korean medicine treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) this study reviewed both single ingredients and bioactive compounds in the treatment of ANFH in a rat model. Literature was retrieved from PubMed and Google Scholar using the keywords "femur head necrosis," "natural extract," and "rat." The data from studies analyzed included: rats' characteristics, development methods of ANFH, natural extracts administration, observation methods, and outcome indicators. Two independent researchers screened all articles retrieved and 26 studies were chosen. The most used rat species was the Sprague Dawley rat (76.9%). To induce ANFH, steroid injections (46.2%), and oral gavage (53.8%) were typically used. Studies focused mainly on factors affecting bone formation (65.3%), and apoptosis (53.8%). Research on ANFH focused on using traditional natural substances mentioned in classical literature to confirm its effectiveness against anti-inflammation, osteogenesis, and cell death. ANFH has a diverse etiology, therefore research models such as genetic analysis of human-derived samples from ANFH patients may shed more light on the condition. Moreover, research into herbal medicines and pharmacoacupuncture treatment of ANFH should precede.

  • Purpose: This review is to figure out evidence that suggest effectiveness of Korean Medicine treatments against cervical dysplasia. Methods: Studies on cervical cancer and cervical dysplasia were searched through 6 databases: Korean Studies Information Service System(KISS), National Discovery for Science Leaders (NDSL), Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (Korean TK), Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS), the Journal of Korean Medicine, and the Journal of Korean Obstetrics & Gynecology. After that, the articles were extracted with reference point of Korean Traditional Medicine. Results: 37 articles were included lastly according to selection criteria. 3 of them were case reports on cervical dysplasia, and 34 were in-vitro studies on Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) positive cancer cell. In case reports, acupuncture, moxibustion, medical herbs and pharmacoacupuncture were used for treatments of cervical dysplasia with about 3 months. Experimental studies on cervical cancer cell showed that several herbs function with clear heat, eliminate stasis (淸熱解毒, 化瘀消腫) have anti-cancer effects inducing apoptosis. Conclusions: The results of articles are not enough to use in practice. Therefore, we indicates more advanced research methodology as follows: development of Korean Medicine treatment protocol with oral and external, in-vivo experimental study, and evaluation immunity index.

Methods: An online survey was conducted to all members who had registered e-mail address in the association of Korean medicine from 1 to 17 November, 2016. Statistical analysis was performed and odds ratio with 95% confidence interval were calculated by each subgroup. Results: A total of 743 members answered the questions and the response rate was 4.1%. The priorities for expanding health insurance benefits were as follows: thermographic imaging, Sasang constitution typing test, and pulse wave among examinations; pharamacopuncture, embedding acupuncture, and acupotomy among procedures; Chuna manual therapy, manual therapy for meridian muscle, and Daoyin exercise therapy among manual therapies; low-frequency electrical therapy, traction, paraffin bath, and light therapy among physical therapies; and aromatherapy, enema therapy, and color therapy among activities of KM. Conclusions: It should be covered by the national health insurance (NHI) of KM that thermographic imaging, pharmacoacupuncture, Chuna manual therapy, low-frequency electrical therapy, aromatherapy as a top priority. We also suggest that basic medical tests, such as blood, urine, or imaging, should be included in the coverage of the NHI of KM. It is necessary to review the expertise and public opinions about the plans and priorities for the conversion of the desired medical services to be covered by the NHI.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to report five patients with a sternum fracture after a traffic accident who improved with a combination of Korean medicine treatments. Methods : We collected data of traffic accident patients with a sternum fracture who were admitted to Dae-Jeon Jaseng Korean Medicine Hospital from March 2019 to September 2019. We observed five cases of patients treated with acupuncture, pharmacoacupuncture, herbal medicine, and Korean physical therapy. We measured the validity of the treatments using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and European Quality of Life-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) at admission, at two weeks, and on the discharge date of hospitalization. Results : Following treatment using a combination of the above mentioned methods, the general overall condition of the patients had significantly improved. Furthermore, the NRS and EQ-5D scores were numerically better. Conclusions : After the combination of Korean medicine treatments, results from five patients with a sternum fracture after a traffic accident suggested that the treatments were effective. However, the number of subjects was insufficient and individual efficacy was not measured in this study. Therefore, further studies are needed on this topic.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the effect of spinal decompression with Korean medicine treatment on the herniation of an intervertebral disc (HIVD) in a patient after fusion surgery of a cervical segment. Methods : A single patient was treated with spinal decompression, acupuncture, pharmacoacupuncture, and herbal medication. We measured the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Neck Disability Index (NDI), European Quality of Life-5 Dimension (EQ-5D), Cervical Range of Motion (cervical ROM) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score to evaluate the treatment effects. Results : The patient's post neck pain & pain in both arms improved significantly as suggested by the scores on the NRS, NDI, EQ5D, cervical ROM and BDI. Conclusions : Thus, spinal decompression, including Korean medicine treatment, could be taken into consideration for HIVD patients after fusion surgery.
