Effect of Magnetic Strength of Three-dimensionally Arranged Magnetic Barrel Machine on Polishing Characteristics

  • Commercially available magnetic barrel machines equipped with permanent magnets have certain limitations: work can only be finished effectively in limited areas of the container because permanent magnets are arranged two-dimensionally on the magnet disk. We overcame this problem by developing a new magnetic barrel machine equipped with a three-dimensional magnet arrangement. The effectiveness of the new machine has already been reported; this study improved the machine's polishing ability by changing the polarity of magnets on a magnet block. Polishing experiments confirmed the most effective arrangement of magnets on the magnet block. An alternating arrangement of north and south poles produced far superior polishing characteristics than a uniform arrangement of the same pole facing outward. Alternating polarity probably causes increased quantities of barrel media to work together. Finally, we introduced stronger permanent magnets to the magnet block, and found that the increased magnetic field also improved polishing ability.

  • The magnetic and metallurgical characteristics of Mischmetal(MM) -Ferroboron (FeB) Permanent magnets have been investigated by X-ray diffractometer, scanning and transmission electron microscope and vibrating sample magnetometer under hot-pressing and die-upsetting process. The best magnetic properties obtained in these studies were $H_c$=5.8 kOe, $B_r$=5.0 kG with $(BH)_{max}=7.6 MGOe for melt-spun ribbons, $H_c$=3.0 kOe, $B_r$=4.6 kG with $(BH)_{max}$=2.9 MGOe for hot-pressed magnets and $H_c$=1.8 kOe, $B_r$=5.5 kG with $(BH)_{max}$=4.1 MGOe for die-upset magnets. The higher magnetic properties in die-upset magnets were resulted from alignment of the c-axis along the die-upsetting direction.

  • The line start permanent magnet (LSPM) motor has been developed facilitate to the design of the synchronous motor. The rotor of this motor is composed of interior permanent magnets and aluminum bars instead of rotor windings. It is difficult to predict the performance characteristics accurately, because many characteristics are produced by the aluminum rotor bars and the permanent magnets. Therefore, in this paper the dynamic characteristics of the LSPM motor are described and compared via the time-stepped finite element method with those of the cage-type induction motor to find the characteristics of the permanent magnets and the rotor bars in the LSPM motor.

A Study on Fracture Behavior and Impact Stability of Sintered Rare-earth Permanent Magnets

  • The fracture behavior and mechanical characteristics of sintered rare-earth magnets were investigated. It shows that the fracture behavior and bending strength of the magnets obviously exhibit anisotropy. Sm-Co magnets tend to cleavage fracture in the close-packed (0001) plane or in the ($10\bar{1}1$) plane. The fracture mechanism of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ magnet mainly appears to be intergranular fracture. The anisotropy of fracture behavior and mechanical strength of sintered rare-earth magnets is caused mainly by the strong crystal-structure anisotropy and the grain alignment texture. The effects of Nd content, and Pr, Dy substitution on the impact stability of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ magnets were also reported.

  • 최근에는 회전자에 희토류 영구자석을 삽입하여 높은 효율과 출력밀도를 얻을 수 있는 매입형 영구자석 (IPM: Interior Permanent Magnet) 전동기 또는 표면부착형 영구자석 (SPM : Surface Permanent Magnet) 전동기처럼 영구자석이 사용된 전동기의 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 영구자석을 사용하기 때문에 릴럭턴스 전동기나 유도전동기와 비교해 효율이 높고 출력밀도가 높은 장점이 있으나 회전자에 영구자석을 삽입함으로써 고속운전 및 영구자석의 감자로 인한 신뢰성 감소, 희토류 금속의 원가 상승 등이 문제시되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 희토류 영구자석 전동기를 대체할 수 있는 미래기술 개발과, 희토류 저감형 전동기와 탈 희토류 전동기의 기술 선점을 요구하는 시대적 이슈(Issue)에 맞춰 영구자석이 필요 없는 스위치드 릴럭턴스 전동기 (Switched Reluvtance Motor, SRM)를 구동시키기 위한 구동 제어에 연구하고자 한다. PSIM 시뮬레이션 프로그램에서 제공하는 3상 SRM library를 이용하여 회전자 위치 정보 센서를 이용한 SRM의 구동 및 제어 시스템 모델링 (Modeling)을 연구하고자 한다.

영구자석을 이용한 회전형 MR 브레이크의 설계 (Design of MR rotary brake with permanent magnet)

  • In this paper, a novel MR brake with permanent magnet is developed. This system consists of rotary disk, permanent magnet, spring and MR fluid. Permanent magnets are attached to the rotary disk and moves in the direction of radius. The magnets are linked to rotor axis by spring. As rotation speed increases, the magnets move outward from the center of the system by centrifugal force in the MR fluid. A proper design of stator or case makes the system have unique torque characteristics. To show the performance of the system, the research is performed by following procedure. First, the electromagnetic characteristic of the system is analyzed using FEM and commercial code, Maxwell is used for this analysis. Then, torque is calculated using the result of the electromagnetic analysis to validate the performance of the system.

  • In this paper, we propose a new type of rotor construction in the permanent magnet synchronous motor. By using plural permanent magnets for one-role of the rotor, it is possible not only to reduce space harmonics of air-gap fields but also to provide spacs for damper windings in the inter-pole space. The dimensions of the plural permanent magnets are derived by Fourier analysis. Based on the investigation by numerical analyses. we propose an optimal rotor construction in view of both the reduction of space harmonics and the damping effect.
