  • In this paper, the three-dimensional magnetic field created by non-periodic magnet arrays is calculated analytically. The analytical expression of the magnetic field is derived by using a magnetic charge model. The influence of ferromagnetic boundaries is formulated with an image method. Finally, we compare the results determined by analytical calculations to those from a finite element simulation.

  • Flux-switching permanent magnet machines (FSPMM) have doubly-salient and simple structures making it cost effective and suitable for mass production. In addition, it is possible to increase the rotor rotating speed and concentrate the flux of the permanent magnet on the air-gap. Due to these merits, the FSPMM can be applied to the various industry applications. To improve the performance, various design variables need to be studied in terms of design techniques. In this paper, we especially concentrate on the distribution of iron losses using a two-dimensional finite-element method (2D FEM). As a result, we can get an information for high efficiency FSPMM design.

  • This paper compares the performances of permanent-magnet synchronous (PMS) and permanent-magnet vernier (PMV) machines for low-speed and high-torque applications. For comparison with the PMS machines, we consider two types of the PMV machine. The first one has surface-mounted permanent magnets (PMs) on the rotor and the other has PMs inserted on both sides of the stator and rotor. The PMS and PMV machines are designed to meet the condition of equal output power per unit volume. We analyze the magnetic fields of the machines using a two-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). We then compare their performances in terms of the generated torque characteristics, power factor, loss, and efficiency.

  • Several of the conventional hydraulic systems in an automobile are now being replaced by more reliable and energy efficient electromechanical systems. Developments in the brushless permanent magnet machine and in the power and control electronics are the key factors responsible for this transformation. These applications brought out some performance challenges associated with the brushless machines. This paper will focus on these challenges to be able to use these machines in such applications. In terms of replacing hydraulic systems with electromechanical systems, steering system is leading the way in automobiles. Currently, steering systems using Electro-hydraulically assisted systems and Electrically assisted (Electromechanical) systems are in the market. Though the Electrically assisted power steering has several advantages over other systems, certain performance and cost challenges delayed the penetration of such systems in to the market.

  • The paper presents a systematic comparison of four topologies of the interior permanent magnet machine (IPMM) designed for low speed applications. This comparative study investigates the suitability of the concentrated winding and distributed winding in the stator and the flat-shaped or V-shaped magnets in the rotor poles. The paper also studies the inductance characteristics of the designs using finite element analysis. Various steps taken to minimize the cogging torque and torque ripple in the studied machines were also discussed in details.

  • This paper deals with electormagnetic analysis of reluctance type machines with permanent magnet/electromagn et. First, we calculated flux density of relucta nce type machines with permanent magnet/electromagnet according to position. Second, analyzed normal force and horizontal force from flux density of machine according to position. Also, analysis result compares with data that is derived through a finite element analysis (FEA), and proved validity.

  • This paper proposes a parametric model for inter-turn fault detection in a fault-tolerant permanent-magnet (FTPM) machine, which can predict the effect of the short-circuit fault to various physical quantity of the machine. For different faulty operations, a new effective stator inter-turn fault detection method is proposed. Finally, simulations of vector-controlled FTPM machine drives are given to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, showing that even single-coil short-circuit fault could be exactly detected.

  • In this study, we present a comparison of multistage axial flux permanent-magnet machines (AFPMs) with different topologies for use as 100 W-class portable generating systems. Three topologies were selected, and the maximum power density and high level of efficiency were achieved by following the response surface methodology (RSM) in the design. Three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) was used to conduct numerical experiments to obtain the optimum design using the RSM and suggest a proper configuration of the portable generating system.

  • This paper proposes a comparative study of dual-airgap flux switching permanent magnet (FSPM) and spoke-type interior permanent magnet (S-IPM) machines equipped with phase-group concentrated-coil (PGCC) windings. Both of the investigated machines are the same size and material amounts which are compared at the same operating conditions. All the relevant machine performance including back electromotive force (EMF), cogging torque, and electromagnetic torque are analyzed by a 2-D time-stepping finite element method (FEM).

  • Surface-mounted permanent magnet (PM) machines were examined experimentally and theoretically, through power loss measurements and calculations. Windage, friction and copper losses were calculated using simple analytical equations and finite element (FE) analyses. Stator core losses were calculated by determining core loss coefficients through curve-fitting and magnetic behavior analysis through non-linear FE calculations. Rotor eddy current losses were calculated using FE analyses that considered the time harmonics of phase current according to load. Core, windage and friction open-circuit losses and copper loss were determined experimentally to test the validity of the analyses.
