  • Frequency characteristics of gain-saturated erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) are experimentally evaluated to mitigate the optical signal fluctuation induced by atmospheric turbulence in terrestrial freespace optical communication systems. Here, an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) is used to emulate optical signal fluctuations induced by atmospheric turbulence. The waveform which is generated in proportion to the refractive-index structural parameters is used to drive the AOM at various periodic frequencies. Thus, the dependence of the signal fluctuation suppression on the frequency is evaluated. The experiment is conducted using a periodic frequency sweep of the AOM driving voltage waveform and signal input power variation of the amplifier. It is observed that a low periodic frequency and high input signal power effectively suppress the optical signal fluctuation. This study evaluates the experimental results from the high-pass filter and gain-saturation characteristics of the EDFA.

  • Numerical simulations are conducted for the analysis of a thermal mass air flow sensor with periodic heating pulses on silicon-nitride ($Si_3N_4$) thin membrane structure. This study aims to find the locations of temperature sensors on the thin membrane and the heating pulse conditions, that the higher sensitivity can be achieved, for the development of a MEMS fabricated mass air flow sensor which is driven in periodic heating pulse. The simulations, thus, focus on the membrane temperature profile according to variation of the flow velocity, heating duration time and imposed power. The flow velocity of the simulations is ranging from 3 m/s to 35 m/s, heating duration time from 1 ms to 3 ms and imposed power from 50 mW to 90 mW. The corresponding Reynolds numbers vary from 1000 to 10000.

  • In this paper, HF band LPDA(Log-periodic Dipole Antenna) and MLPDA(Modified Log-periodic Dipole Antenna) above lossy grounds were analyzed using moment method by considering the practical media parameter of lossy grounds, not assuming free space or perfect ground approximation. The radiation pattern and gain of LPDA and MLPDA as functions of frequency, antenna height from ground, and antenna tilt angle are presented, and the lossy ground effect on antennas characteristics are described. MLPDA was found to exhibit a smaller variation for gain and radiation pattern and a higher maximum beam direction relative to LPDA. It was shown that media parameter of lossy grounds and antenna height have a direct influence on the antenna gain of both LPDA and MLPDA.

  • Repetitive Load Prediction is proposed for the UPS inverter application of the second order deadbeat controller which is robust against the calculation time delay and the parameter variation and which gets fast response against the load variation. The proposed technique predicts the load current ahead of two sampling time using that the load current is periodic. This is effective under nonlinear load condition. The proposed technique is derived theoretically and verified through simulation and experimental result.

  • In this study, the vorticity distribution and the temperature distribution change around a circular cylinder were compared and analyzed with time for constant inlet velocity and periodic inlet velocity. Also, the frequency characteristics of the flow were analyzed by analyzing the time variation of lift and drag and their PSD(power spectral density). In the case of constant inlet velocity, the well known Karman vorticity distribution was shown, and vortices were alternately generated at the upper and lower sides of the circular cylinder. In case of periodic inlet velocity, it was observed that vortex occurred simultaneously in the upper and lower sides of the circular cylinder. In both cases, it was confirmed that the time dependent temperature distribution changes almost the same behavior as the vorticity distribution. For the constant inlet velocity, the vortex flow frequency is 31.15 Hz, and for the periodic inlet velocity, the vortex flow frequency is equal to the preriodic inlet velocity at 15.57 Hz. The mean surface Nusselt number was 99.6 for the constant inlet velocity and 110.7 for the periodic inlet velocity, which showed 11.1% increase in surface heat transfer.

  • This study was to quantitatively evaluate periodic and maximum energy loads for broiler-standard design models by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (2016). Building energy simulation method was used to compute heating and cooling loads of the designed broiler houses according to regional locations and insulation characteristics of wall and roof. It considered sensible and latent heat generation from broilers, dynamic operation of ventilation system according to environment variations. It was found that variation of periodic heating loads was relatively higher than that of periodic cooling loads according to thickness changes of wall and roof. Assuming that broiler was raised at every even-month, periodic heating and cooling loads were 6 and 18% lower, respectively than odd-month raising condition. When recommendation rules of insulation characteristics (wall and roof thickness) by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport was adopted, periodic heating load of Jeju-si was 20.3% higher than national average values. Based on the BES computed periodic and maximum energy loads under the designed experimental condition, these results can contribute to reestablishing standard design of broiler houses, especially for insulation characteristics, and designing management strategies for efficient energy uses.

  • We discuss the orbital period changes of the Algol semi-detached eclipsing binary DI Peg by constructing the (O-C) residual diagram via using all the available precise minima times. We conclude that the period variation can be explained by a sine-like variation due to the presence of a third body orbiting the binary, together with a long-term orbital period increase (dP/dt=0.17 sec/century) that can be interpreted to be due to mass transfer from the evolved secondary component (of rate $1.52{\times}10^{-8}M_{\odot}/yr$) to the primary one. The detected low-mass third body ($M_{3min.}=0.22{\pm}0.0006M_{\odot}$) is responsible for a periodic variation of about 55 years light time effect. We have determined the orbital parameters of the third component which show a considerable eccentricity $e_3=0.77{\pm}0.07$ together with a longitude of periastron ${\omega}_3=300^{\circ}{\pm}10^{\circ}$.

  • Van der Pol's oscillators is non-conservative oscillator that having nonlinear damping phenomena. The energy of its system is dissipative at a high amplitude whereas its system creates the energy at low amplitude. This paper deals with the Van der Pol oscillator model with a fractional order when the external force apply into Van der Pol oscillator. This paper confirms the status of variation for the limit cycle according to the parameter variation of fractional order in the Van der Pol oscillator that can be represented by fractional differential equation.

  • A new multi-timescale analysis method, Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD), is used to diagnose the variation of the MJO activity determined by 850hPa and 200hPa zonal winds from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) Reanalysis data for the 56-yr period from 1950 to 2005. The results show that MJO activity can be decomposed into 9 quasi-periodic oscillations and a trend. With each level of contribution of the quasi-periodic oscillation discussed, the bi-seasonal oscillation, the interannual oscillation and the trend of the MJO activity are the most prominent features. The trend increases almost linearly, so that prior to around 1978 the activity of the MJO is lower than that during the latter part. This may be related to the tropical sea surface temperature(SST). It is speculated that the interdecadal change in the MJO activity appeared in around 1978 is related to the warmer SST in the equatorial warm pool, especially over the Indian Ocean.

  • Recently, The TCN(Train Communication Network} as the distributed control systems for electric vehicles, which is the international standard of the intra vehicle communication, actively recognizes variations and supports reconfiguration of the train network when a vehicle is separated or recombined. The technique of reconfiguration to take variety and interoperability of a vehicle constitution is used when the vehicle constitution is changed. At the time, each node making up vehicle network shares the information about the variation of vehicle constitutions and the state of nodes. In the hierarchical TCN structure, an exchange of data becomes available as a work to transmit information between components is performed at the node playing a role of gateway. This paper proposes a protocol to transmit the information of the train reconfiguration. The protocol gives an application to renew a list for transmitting information and to perform the transmission that can guarantee periodic and non-periodic data transmission between nodes when the network nodes changed by a variation of the network state are reconfigured. If use this protocol, can use functions that are offered in the electric railcar at the same time that composition of vehicles is completed without delay. And when driver of the electric railcar inspect before running of vehicles, can confirm state of vehicles visually through monitor in driver's room.
