The early ontogeny of the vascular cambium in the hypocotyl of Eucommia ulmoides seedling was studied anatomically. In transverse view, the procambial cells repeated periclinal divisions and then gradually differentiated into vascular cambium; however, in the transectional plane, it was difficult to reveal the origin of cambial initials. In tangential view, the early procambial cells repeated periclinal divisions and then the procambium consisted of homogeneous short cells. Some cells in late procambium did not show transverse divisions, but elongated continuously. Thus, the procambium showed a heterogeneous structure: The long cells became fusiform initials with tapering end walls and the short cells differentiated into ray initials. Conclusively, the two types of cambial initials were gradually originated from the homogeneous cells at the early procambial stage, and they consisted vascular cambium.
Korean terminologies on stem structures in plant morphology, written incorrectly in many books, were analysed to propose accurately expressed terminologies. 35 books in areas such as general biology, plant biology, plant morphology, and biological dictionaries and glossaries were selected to analyse the accuracy of the terminologies for seed structures, e.g., shoot and shoot system, rhizome, apical dominance, anticlinal and periclinal divisions, and intercalary and lateral meristems. The definition and etymology of the terminologies were traced in 4 textbooks of plant anatomy and 2 dictionaries of biology and botany written in English. On the basis of the definition, etymology, and principles for terminology formation according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 704:2000), reasonably expressed Korean terminologies were proposed. All of the 8 terminologies examined in this study were included in the glossary of biological terminologies, published by the Korean Association of Biological Sciences in 2005, and designated as an editorial source for science and biology textbooks for middle and high schools by Ministry of Education in 2007. However, the only 1 of the 8 terminologies described in the glossary were consistent with the proposed expression in the present study. These inconsistencies indicated the need for a reassessment of this glossary of biological terminologies. The validity of the proposed Korean terminologies was tested in a questionnaire sent to 17 professors teaching plant morphology or/and taxonomy at universities. A mean of 91.9% of the total respondents agreed with the Korean expressions proposed in this study. The new, proposed terminologies would facilitate mutual understanding between teachers and students of plant biology.
Morphological and phonological characteristics of brown alga Spatoglossum crassum Tanaka new to Korea were described based on the field and the indoor cultured plants. The taxonomic characteristics of the plants were agreed to those from the type locality-submerged reproductive organs in cortex, anatomical features, and absence of phaeophycean hairs on the surface. But they have rudimentary midrib on lower portion of thallus. We can observe the young plants on November, adult ones in June, and senile ones in August. This species has an annual life-cycle in the field, starting with germ lings in early November. The differentiation of thallus is quite different from other species of genera in tribe Zonarieae, e.g. Zonaria and Homoeostrichus. Three different tissues, meristoderm, cortex and medulla are discerned. The outmost cortical one celled layer as a meristoderm produce cortex by unequal periclinal division. In the apical cell division, the primary inner cells are developed into 3-4 cell layered medulla of thallus. The distribution of this species extends from Korea to Shizuoka Peninsula (34°40'N) Japan, which is the type locality of this species.
Nerium indicum has adaxial colleters on each petiole, bract, bracteole, calyx and corolla. The colleters are finger-shaped sometimes lobed structures with tall heads on short stalks. The petiolar colleters are more abundant than those on the bract, bracteole, calyx and corolla but their structure is similar. Meristematic activity in a small group of protodermal and hypodermal cells at the base of the developing leaf gives rise to the colleter that further differentiates by frequent anticlinal and periclinal divisions. Many of the colleters are vascullarized, sometimes a layer of redially elongated cells is present beneath the epithelial cells. Senescence of a colleter begins when the leaves have either completed their growth or are still expanding. In senescent colleters, the central cell cytoplasm and nuclei are considerably reduced. Thin layer chromatography of the freshly harvested exudate of colleter shows the presence of rhamnose, glucose and arabinose sugars.
Cuticle micromorphology of four families of Korean gymnosperms, Cycadaceae, Ginkgoaceae, Taxaceae, and Cephalotaxaceae, were studied with scanning electron microscopy. The outer and inner features of abaxial and adaxial cuticles were described in details; the absent or present of Florin ring, orifice, trichome, and plug and their shape, the shape and periclinal and anticlinal wall sculpture of epidermal cells, the shape of cuticular flange of epidermal cell, guard cell, and subsidiary cell, the number of stomatal bands and rows, and stomatal apparatus including the shape of polar extension, number of subsidiary cells, the sculpture of guard cell and subsidiary cell. Most of these features have not been sufficiently substantiated by the previous reprots. Furthermore, all the species investigated showed distinctive cuticle morphology with morphological and taxonomical informations.
The origin of cambial initials from procambium was studied in the seedling root of Acer saccharinum. In transverse view, the first periclinal divisions of procambial cells occurred just outside of each early metaxylem and resulted in meristematic strips. As root development progressed, the division activities appeared subsequently outside of each late metaxylem and then in pericycle cells opposite the four protoxylem poles. Eventually, such meristematic strips were connected completely each other. Thus, a nearly rectangular shaped meristematic layer in outline was formed outside the xylem in a whole root transectioned. In tangential section, early procambium showed a homogeneous structure consisted of uniform short cells with transverse end walls. However, some of the procambial cells did elongate, whereas others divided transversely. The former become more elongate, tapered, and vacuolated. Finally, they differentiated into fusiform initials. Short cells consisting axial strands divided continuousely in transverse plane and became ray initials, while some short cells elongated and transformed into long cells. The early ontogeny of vascular cambium in Acer saccharinum root was interpreted to be established by a gradual process.
Observation was made on early ontogeny of vascular cambium in the cotyledonary node of Pinus koraiensis seedling in order to clarify the cambial ontogeny of the node which was hardly elongated. In transverse view, the derivatives by the early periclinal divisions at the outer region of the procambial strands differentiated to protophloem with establishing a certain degree of radial seriations. Later, some cells in the central region of the procambial strands begin divide periclinally, eventually the cells, differentiate gradually to the vascular cambium. In tangential view, early procambium is consisted of homogeneous short cells with transverse end walls which are tansformed into the long cells and short cells gradually. The long cells continue intrusive growth and the short cells repeat transverse division. Finally, the long and short cells differentiated to cambial fusiform initials and ray initials respectively. In tangential section, the differentiation pattern of cambial initials resembles that of the stem of Ginkgo biloba. But in transverse view, the characteristics in the origin of vascular cambium of the cotyledonary node resembles that of root. The vascular cambium in cotyledonary node is completed after eleven prophylls were formed.
The synthesis of chimeras is a breeding approach for horticultural crops. In our breeding program, a new diploid citrus chimera, named 'Hongrou Taoye' (Citrus sinensis [L.] Osbeck + Citrus unshiu Marc.), was found arising at the junction where a 'Taoye' sweet orange (C. sinensis) scion was grafted onto Satsuma mandarin (C. unshiu). As an artificial chimera, its fruit traits derived from the L1 cell layer, with juice color and carotenoid complement, in which ${\beta}$-cryptoxanthin accumulated predominantly, similar to those of Satsuma mandarin. By contrast, traits originating from the L2/L3 cell layer, including pollen, seed, and rind aroma characteristics, were the same as those of 'Taoye' sweet orange (the scion). SSR and cpSSR analyses showed that both nuclear and chloroplast genomes of the chimera were a combination of both donor parents. 'Hongrou Taoye' thus combined the valuable traits of both donor plants, and therefore has good potential in citrus fresh market.

Fluorescence and electron microscopy were used to examine epidermal shedding in the fucoid alga, Ascophyllum nodosum. Mature meristoderm cells are ca. 50-100 x 30-40 ${\mu}m$ and highly polarized, with a single nucleus and chloroplasts near the base of the cell. Nuclei in these cells undergo mitosis when they are dividing to form a new cortical cell towards the middle of the frond, or anticlinal divisions as part of frond elongation. However, cytokinesis also occurs regularly in these cells when a new periclinal wall is deposited at about 30% of the cell length from the apical end. The newly formed distal cells are anucleate and without chloroplasts. Following cytokinesis the tangential walls then break at the thinnest point. The whole process is synchronous in adjoining epidermal cells across large areas of the frond surface, and this layer dehisces from the thallus. This is the only known plant or algal system in which cytokinesis regularly occurs in the absence of mitosis. We consider this process a novel form of programmed cell death.
Structural changes of the endosperm of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer from fertilization to germination were investigated by light microscope. The endosperm of the ginseng seed is cellular type. Since endosperm cells adjacent embryo continuously breakdown and disappear with the elongation of embryo, the real of endosperm is gradually decreased. As the anatropous ovules of immature seed with green seed coat developes more and more, ovary cells adjacent ovary cavity become abundant by the periclinal division, their size is decreased, hypotrophy of cell wall discern, and they are gradually differentiated in seed coat. Though embryo responds strongly to basic dye at the stage of completion of endosperm formation, tissue of endosperm responds to acidic dye positively Cell wall of embryo and endosperm are composed of primary cell wall not lignified. Endosperm cells adjacent embryo begin to breakdown in the endosperm tissue of indehiscent seed before the beginning of the after-ripening. Dehiscent seed of which seed coat is opened through after-ripening represent the form as a seedling in the result of embryo developments with the formation of organs; radicle, cotyledon, plumule. Umbilifom layer represents strong positive response to the toluidine blue and the basic function. Umbiliform layer that endosperm cells breakdown and disappear is observed clearly at the periphery of the embryo cotylemon, while slightly at the periphery of the radicle.
