  • The segmentation of moving object in video sequence is a core technique of intelligent image processing system such as video surveillance, traffic monitoring and human tracking. A typical method to segment a moving region from the background is the background subtraction. The steps of background subtraction involve calculating a reference image, subtracting new frame from reference image and then thresholding the subtracted result. One of famous background modeling is Gaussian mixture model (GMM). Even though the method is known efficient and exact, GMM suffers from a problem that includes false pixels in ROI (region of interest), specifically shadow pixels. These false pixels cause fail of the post-processing tasks such as tracking and object recognition. This paper presents a method for removing false pixels included in ROT. First, we subdivide a ROI by using shape characteristics of detected objects. Then, a method is proposed to classify pixels from using histogram characteristic and comparing difference of energy that converts the color value of pixel into grayscale value, in order to estimate whether the pixels belong to moving object area or shadow area. The method is applied to real video sequence and the performance is verified.

  • It is essential to develop the robust video transmission system over wireless channel, since the effect of the noise and the interference to compressed video may be fatal. In this paper, we have designed turbo code, which is adequate for the transmission of video and analyzed the performance of that. Especially, we have focused the rate compatible punctured turbo(RCPT) code, which has rate compatible(RC) property for unequal error protection(UEP). It has been shown through computer simulation that the turbo code with helical interleaver yields better performance than those with other interleavers when the size of the interleaver is not large.

  • Recently, video data has attracted many interest. That is the reason why efficient indexing schemes are required to support the content-based retrieval of video data. But most indexing schemes are not suitable for indexing a high-dimensional data except Hybrid Spill-Tree. In this paper, we propose an efficient high-dimensional indexing scheme to support the content-based retrieval of video data. For this, we extend Hybrid Spill-Tree by using a newly designed clustering technique and by adopting a signature method. Finally, we show that proposed signature-based high dimensional indexing scheme achieves better retrieval performance than existing M-Tree and Hybrid Spill-Tree.

  • This paper proposed a new VLSI architecture of motion estimation (ME) and compensation (MC) for efficient video compression and implemented it to hardware. ME is generally calculated using SAD result. So we proposed a new arithmetic method for SAD. The proposed SAD calculation method increases arithmetic efficiency and decreases external memory usage. Finally it increases performance of ME/MC. The proposed ME/MC hardware was implemented to ASIC with TSMC 90nm HVT CMOS library. The implemented hardware occupies about 330K gates and stably operates the clock frequency of 143MHz.

  • In recent years, HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) has attracted considerable attention as the state-of-the-art technology for video transport. HAS dynamically adjusts the quality of video streaming according to the network bandwidth and device capability of users. Content-Centric Networking (CCN) has also emerged as a future Internet architecture, which is a novel communication paradigm that integrates content delivery as a native network primitive. These trends have led to the new research issue of harmonizing HAS with the in-network caching provided by CCN routers. Previous research has shown that the performance of HAS can be improved by using the H.264/SVC(scalable video codec) in the in-network caching environments. However, the previous study did not address the misbehavior that causes video freeze when overestimating the available network bandwidth, which is attributable to the high cache hit rate. Thus, we propose a new SVC-based adaptation algorithm that utilizes a drop timer. Our approach aims to stop the downloading of additional enhancement layers that are not cached in the local CCN routers in a timely manner, thereby preventing excessive consumption of the video buffer. We implemented our algorithm in the SVC-HAS client and deployed a testbed that could run Smooth-Streaming, which is one of the most popular HAS solutions, over CCNx, which is the reference implementation of CCN. Our experimental results showed that the proposed scheme (SLA) could avoid video freeze in an effective manner, but without reducing the high hit rate on the CCN routers or affecting the high video quality on the SVC-HAS client.

  • A wavelet-based video stream is more susceptible to the network transmission errors than DCT-based video. This is because bit-errors in a subband of a video frame affect not only the other subbands within the current frame but also the subsequent frames. In this paper, we propose a video source coding scheme called IPC(Intra Prediction Coding) scheme in order to reduce the error propagation to the subsequent frames. In the proposed scheme, a subband except LL subband in the current frame refers to the lower-level subband within the same frame. This reduces the error propagation to subsequent frames. We evaluated the performance of our proposed scheme in the simulated wireless network environment. As a result of tests, it was shown that the proposed algorithm shows better performance than MRME in a heavy motion image sequence while IPC outperforms MRME at a high bit-rate in small motion image sequence.

  • Recently, H.264 SE(scalable extension) has become a standard of next generation multimedia service which is one source, multi-user service in the telecommunication environment of different kinds of networks and terminal equipments. But existing DRM schemes for multimedia service are not fit for H.264 SE system. Because the amount of transmitted multimedia data is changed considering network environment and terminal equipments' performance by the system, but in the existing DRM schemes, the amount of handled multimedia data are not variable according to network environment and terminal equipments' performance. In this paper, an information security scheme combined video watermarking and encryption is presented for H.264 SE. Amount of watermarks and embedding positions are calculated by the frame number of enhancement layers which are created according to the state of networks and terminal equipments. In order to minimize delayed time by video watermarking and encryption, the video data are watermarked and encrypted in the H.264 SE compression process. In the experimental results, we confirmed that proposed scheme is robust against video compression, general signal processing and geometric processing.

  • When providing high quality panoramic video across the Internet, mobile communications, and broadcasting areas, it requires a suitable video codec that satisfies both high-compression efficiency and random access functionality. The users must have high-compression efficiency in order to enable video streaming of high-volume panoramic data. Random access allows the user to move the viewpoint and direction freely. In this paper, we propose the parallel processing scheme under cell units in order to improve the performance of streaming service for large screen panoramic video in 10Mbps bandwidths based on H.264/AVC with high compression rate. This improved algorithm divides a screen composed of cells less than $256{\times}256$ in size, encodes it, and decodes it with the cells in the present view. At this point, encoding/decoding is parallel processed by the present cell units. Also, since the cells only included in the present view are packed and transmitted, the possible processing of not extricating blocks is proven by experiment.

  • A HEVC-compatible 3D video coding method (3D-HEVC) has been recently developed as an extension of the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard. In order to efficiently deal with the multi-view video plus depth (MVD) format, 3D-HEVC exploits an inter-component prediction which allows the prediction between texture and depth map images in addition to a temporal prediction used in the conventional single layer video coding such as H.264/AVC and HEVC. The performance of the inter-component prediction is normally affected by the accuracy of the disparity vector, and thus it is important to have an accurate disparity vector used for the inter-component prediction. This paper, therefore, introduces a disparity derivation method and inter-component algorithms using the disparity vector for the efficient 3D video coding. Simulation results show that the 3D-HEVC provides higher coding performance compared with the simulcast approach using HEVC and the simple multi-view extension (MH-HEVC).
