  • For evaluating the performance of some codecs, many researchers have study and develop new objective video quality assessments. However, it's not sufficient for evaluating the temporal feature of video data yet, which is a distinguishable and representative characteristic when compared with other multimedia. This paper propose the method to apply the weight to SSIM (Structural SIMilarity) according to the cognitive psychological feature. And, we presented that the performance of objective video quality assessment applied the weight to SSIM by using the proposed method is superior to one of original SSIM.

  • This paper proposes the use of wavelet packet transform in a transform based video coding scheme, which is mainly used in low/very low bit-rate video coding schemes i.e. H.263 standard. In the experiments, the discrete cosine transform in the video coding scheme is replaced by the wavelet packet transform, and the improved performance in term of peak signal to noise ratio is measured and compared with the results obtained from the coding scheme implementing the ordinary wavelet transform. The experimental results show an impressive improvement obtained from the use of wavelet packet transform.

  • The DMB recently standardized in Korea is a Eureka-147 DAB(Digital Audio Broadcasting)-based standard which is able to provide multimedia services including moving pictures, still images, text and etc. That has the structure to add the MPEG media codec and the MPEG system, namely, video-multiplexer to the DAB system. In this paper, we analysis the video-multiplexer of the DMB standard and propose a new multiplexer, namely. M4GM(MPEG-4 General Mux) included in the DMB vido-multiplexer for the performance improvement with respect to the transmission efficiency and the expansible functions. In addition, we simulate the two video-multiplexers and then compare and estimate their performance entirely.

  • This letter proposes a robust feature extraction method using a spatially normalized mean for temporal ordinal measurement. Before computing a rank matrix from the mean values of non-overlapped blocks, each block mean is normalized so that it obeys the invariance property against linear additive and subtractive noise effects and is insensitive against multiplied and divided noise effects. Then, the temporal ordinal measures of spatially normalized mean values are computed for the feature matching. The performance of the proposed method showed about 95% accuracy in both precision and recall rates on various distortion environments, which represents the 2.7% higher performance on average compared to the temporal ordinal measurement.

  • The video data corrupted by the transmission error due to packet loss induce error propagation in decoded video data, and cause poor video quality. To remedy these corrupted video data, there have been introduced two types of error concealment techniques: spatial or temporal error concealment algorithm. Computational overhead by using spatial error concealment algorithm is a serious disadvantage in mobile video data streaming environment. In this paper, we propose hybrid type error concealment technique recovering video quality of mobile device using MPEG-4 video streaming on error-prone wireless network. Our algorithm is implemented in MPEG-4 decoder. The algorithm adopts Intel Wireless MMX technology to provide high performance of portable embedded multimedia mobile device. It is proven that the proposed algorithm shows expected performance for a mobile streaming system(PDA) on IP channels. Our approach showed better processing speed and better video quality comparing with traditional error concealment algorithm.

  • With advances in video technology, many researchers are interested in video quality assessment to prove better performance of proposed algorithms. Since human visual system is too complex to be formulated exactly, many researches about video quality assessment are in progressing. No-reference video-quality assessment is suitable for various video streaming services, because of no requested additional data and network capacity to perform quality assessment. In this paper, we propose a novel no-reference video-quality assessment method with the estimation of dynamic range distortion. To measure the performance, we obtain mean opinion score (MOS) data by subject video quality test with the ITU-T P.910 Absolute Category Rating (ACR) method. And, we compare it with proposed algorithm using 363 video sequences. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a higher correlation with obtained MOS.

  • Current communication networks consist of channels with various throughputs, protocols, and packet loss rates. Moreover, there are also diverse user multimedia consumption devices having different capabilities and screen sizes. Thus, a practical necessity of scalability on video coding have been gradually increasing. Recently, The Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding(SHVC) standard is developed by Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding(JCT-VC) organized in cooperation with MPEG of ISO/IEC and VCEG of ITU-T. This paper introduces coding tools of SHVC including adopted and unadopted tools discussed in the process of the SHVC standardization. Furthermore, the individual tool and combined tool set are evaluated in terms of coding efficiency relative to a single layer coding structure. This analysis would be useful for developing a fast SHVC encoder as well as researching on a new scalable coding tool.

  • In this paper, an MPEG-2 based technique for embedding digital watermarks into MPEG-2 video is proposed. The technique hides watermarking information into the DCT coefficients of each frame from MPEG-2 video. Several experiments have been conducted to show the performance in different conditions: the location of embedding watermarks, the change of Bitrates, and relocation of I-pictures in the MPEG video.

  • Today, the media environment has changed dramatically with the development of Internet transmission technology, computer performance, and various media production technologies. In particular, video content is widely used every day through mobile device or computer connected to the Internet. In addition, the ability to produce video content today is more important than ever, as the use of video content is also increasing in the area of information delivery and communication over the Internet. In this study, it was developed a liberal education curriculum in universities for the production of video content. The developed curriculum was composed of a combination of an online curriculum for theory and an offline curriculum for practicum. In the online curriculum, a 54 DOOR contents were developed to allow students to learn the theoretical knowledge and basic making techniques related to the production of video content. In an offline 15-week practicum curriculum, it covered the practical training contents of video content production that should be acquired every week. This developed liberal education curriculum aims to give non-major students in universities the opportunity to learn the technology of producing video content and to foster the ability to communicate in the media environment by using the video content produced.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach for content-based video retrieval using non-parametric based motion classification in the shot-based video indexing structure. Our system proposed in this paper has supported the real-time video retrieval using spatio-temporal feature comparison by measuring the similarity between visual features and between motion features, respectively, after extracting representative frame and non-parametric motion information from shot-based video clips segmented by scene change detection method. The extraction of non-parametric based motion features, after the normalized motion vectors are created from an MPEG-compressed stream, is effectively fulfilled by discretizing each normalized motion vector into various angle bins, and by considering the mean, variance, and direction of motion vectors in these bins. To obtain visual feature in representative frame, we use the edge-based spatial descriptor. Experimental results show that our approach is superior to conventional methods with regard to the performance for video indexing and retrieval.
