  • The purpose of this study was to provide analytic rubrics for measuring teamwork(PO6), communication and presentation skills(PO7), and life-long learning(PO8) based on theoretical concepts of performance assessment and rubrics. Also, this study analyzed data about performance assessment and rubics from courses offered through college of engineering. Participants were 34 senior engineering students who took the course 'Technical writing and presentation'. In the second week of the course, students were given the pre-test instrument which was developed for measuring students' understanding of program outcomes for this study. After performing project activities using rubrics, students were encouraged to complete the post-test instrument and the reaction questionnaire during the ninth week. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 14.0 and Microsoft Excel. The research findings are as follows. First, to promote and evaluate program learning outcomes appropriately, performance assessment-based on rubircs should be implemented. Second, in the reaction questionnaire about the rubircs, students answered that using rubircs for performing the project was very useful for understanding the performance procedures and assessment criteria. Third, the mean of understanding of program outcomes of students in post-test was significantly increased than in the pre-test(p<.0001). From the findings, performance assessment and rubrics should be used as evaluation tools at course levels in terms of promoting program learning outcomes for engineering education.

  • Domestic hydroelectric power plants has been manufactured as the design condition by the demand. Hydraulic turbine power plants operating at appointed load shall be operate stable in terms of pressure, discharge, rotational speed and torque. A performance guarantees for hydro turbines shall be contain, as a minimum, guarantees covering power, discharge and specific hydraulic energy, efficiency, maximum momentary overspeed and maximum momentary pressure and maximum steady-state runaway speed, as well as guarantees related to cavitation. But, present in Korea, the absence of testing laboratories and technical criteria for the performance test of small hydropower degrades the efficiency of the domestic hydropower machines, and makes it difficult to objectively evaluate the performance of hydro turbine. Therefore We planned making a basis of performance test of small hydropower turbine by using our flowmeter calibration system the largest one in Korea. We planned the maximum measurable power of hydro turbine will be 200 kW in our system.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify the financial strategies and investigate major determinants of the financial performance in elderly households. This study used the data of 4,577households with all ages and 1,255 elderly households were from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(2000, 2003). The data were analyzed by various statistical methods such as frequency, mean-test, Duncan's multiple range test, k-mean cluster analysis and regression. The major findings were as follows: First, the classified household financial strategy types were Residual(44.3%), Financial Assets(24.0%), Informal Institutional(19.7%), Diversified Portfolio(7.6%), Real Estate(4.5%). Second, the criteria of classification of the financial strategies were relative, not absolute. Third, elderly households that employed a financial assets had the greatest financial performance (62,320,000 won net gain). Households with all ages that employed a diversified portfolio strategy had the greatest financial performance (98,360,000 won net gain). Forth, the determinants of the financial performance were significantly different according to the types of financial strategy.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance properties of chip seals and fog seals with polymer-modified emulsions. METHODS : The performance of chip seals and fog seals was evaluated on the basis of common issues in surface treatments. Granite aggregate and four types of asphalt emulsions (one of the unmodified and three of the modified emulsions) were used considering the usage in field. A Vialit test was performed to determine the aggregate retention, and the MMLS3 (Third Scale Model Mobile Load Simulator) test was conducted to determine the aggregate retention, bleeding, and rutting. In addition, the fog seal specimens were tested by the BPT (British Pendulum Test) to evaluate skid resistance. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : Overall, the polymer-modified emulsions (PMEs) showed better aggregate retention and bleeding resistance for both chip seals and fog seals. When comparing the performance of the PMEs, the difference was not considerable. In addition, PMEs present significantly better rutting resistance than unmodified emulsions. For skid resistance, if the recommended mix design is applied, the specimens do not cause issues with skid resistance. Although all of the fog seal specimens were over the criteria for skid resistance, the specimen fabricated by the high emulsion application rate (EAR) of the unmodified emulsion was nearly equivalent to the skid value criteria. Therefore, the use of an unmodified emulsion with a high EAR should be carefully applied in the field.

  • The most design criteria and specifications in Korea utilized to ensure appropriate quality are based on process and prescriptive criteria determining materials, measure and methods. It has many problems including a loss of competitiveness resulting from inhibited creativity of the contractors. The performance-based specifications focused on final product are being proposed, but have difficulty in adapting to the architectural field. In this study the hybrid specification prototype for curtain wall construction was suggested. The specification framework was presented through analysis of linkage between the performance and prescriptive specification cases. Based on the survey with practitioners, the performance inspection process and the sample specification were developed by identifying the essential performance test timings. The applicability of the specification prototype was evaluated by interviews with experts. It was found that the prototype was active and a progressive supporting tool which could support to secure phased performance during construction as well as final performance.

  • To secure the safety and improve the work efficiency of forest firefighting crews, performance evaluation criteria for safety helmets were developed in this study. Because the standards for forest firefighting safety helmets are not available in Korea, we began our study based on the standards for firefighting safety helmets used by the Korea Fire Institute (KFI). Eleven test items were selected excluding 15 other items out of the 26 test items that, through the consultation of stakeholders and the review of foreign standards, were initially included in our study. Two types of general safety helmets and one firefighting helmet were tested by applying KFI standards, and the results were compared. The general safety helmets did not meet the standards of the retention system and chin strap. Additionally, polyethylene and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene materials were found to be especially weak under heat conditions. We compared the criteria of KFI, International Standardization Organization (ISO) 16073, National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) 1977, NFPA 1971, and British Standards European Norm (BS EN) 443, and finally selected 11 test items and their acceptance criteria suitable for the work environment of forest firefighting crews in Korea.

  • The railway bridges on the new high-speed line are the first structures designed and constructed by our local engineers for high-speed running. In securing running stability and riding comfort in high-speed running, it is very important to verify the performance of structures and local specifications and design criteria by measuring and analyzing the dynamic behavior of main structural members. In this study, 4 different types(simple-span, 2, 3, 4-continuous spans) of PCS Box bridges on the test line(Yongwa$\~$Simok section) were selected, each representing a different type of superstructures, in order to verify the performance of the bridges by measuring dynamic responses during the test-run of KTX. Reviews of the running stability and the riding comfort were carried out with the results of the measurement and the analyses of vibration acceleration, endrotation, distortion and deflection at midspan.
