  • The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance for a seismically isolated main control room (MCR) of nuclear power plant. MCR was isolated by spherically shaped friction pendulum system (FPS). The FPS provided the simplest means of achieving long period in the isolation system under low gravity load. Some parametric studies were conducted with different properties of FPS. When the coefficient of friction in the sliding surface of FPS is low, the seismic performance of MCR was satisfactory However, the lateral displacement in the isolation level was rather large. To restrict this displacement into adequate range, a fluid viscous dampers were used.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate performance characteristics of a household refrigerator using a two-stage compression cycle. The performance of the two-stage compression cycle was measured by varying the compressor speed, condensing temperature, and evaporating temperature. The COP of the two-stage compression cycle was analyzed and then compared with that of the single-stage compression cycle. The optimum combination of compressor speeds for a low- and a high-stage was determined. The COP of the two-stage compression cycle using a PTC (parallel two-stage compression) method was 5.85% higher than that of a STC (serial two-stage compression) method at optimum operating conditions.

  • The objective of this paper is to evaluate the reliability of a volute pump and presents test results through performance and life tests. The performance and life test methods were presented by analyzing the failure modes of the volute pump. Zero failure test time was calculated to evaluate the reliability of the volute pump and then, the test was performed under accelerated conditions. The test was also carried out to check the failure modes of the field conditions. This study can be provided to improve the product reliability through failure analysis of the volute pump. And failure cause of typical failure case has been investigated and improvement design has been presented. The performance test results of before and after the accelerated life test were presented to confirm the improved reliability of the volute pump.

  • Precast reinforced concrete structure (PRCS) consists of prefabricated members assembled at worksites and has more connections limitations in comparison with the equivalent in-situ reinforced concrete structure (IRCS). As a result of these limitations, PRCSs have less ductility in comparison with IRCSs. Recent studies indicate that the most noticeable failure in PRCSs have occurred in their connection zone. The objective of this study is introducing a type of precast beam-to-column connection (PBC) which in spite of being simple is of the same efficiency and performance as in-situ beam-to-column connection (IBC). To achieve this, the performance of proposed new PBC at exterior joint of a four story PRCS was analyzed by pseudo dynamic analysis and compared with that of IBC in equivalent IRCS. Results indicated that the proposed connection has even better performance in terms of strength, energy dissipation and stiffness, than that of IBC.

  • In this paper, the performance characteristics of the 2 vane pump for wastewater treatment were investigated using response surface method(RSM) with commercial computation fluid dynamics(CFD) software. Design variables of wastewater treatment pump were defined with the meridional plane of the 2 vane pump impeller. The objective functions were defined as the total head and the efficiency at the design flow rate. The hydraulic performance of optimum model was verified by numerical analysis and the reliability of the model was retained by comparison of numerical analysis and comparative analysis with the reference model.

  • Recent increases in construction costs on Korean public works projects, largely due to change orders caused by poorly elaborated design, become a motivation of applying VE process in Korean construction industry. The Seoul Toll Plaza project, recently value analyzed by four VE teams, demonstrates how value management helps save time, money and increase functional performance. The objective of this project is to upgrade and expand existing pay and ticket booths system on "Kyungboo Express Highway", the main artery for the Korean peninsula linking Seoul to Pusan. The value management study generated several innovate alternatives capable of saving up to 50% of project cost from the baseline project plan.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to improve TPI OnBaseU Power Test and golf performance by conducting CrossFit power training. Method: Three male golf players from University B participated in this study. They had 3 to 4 years of golf experience and participated in 8 weeks of CrossFit power training. Results: OnBaseU Power Test: There was a lot of improvement in Sit up throw (27.9%) and Chest pass (10.58%), but there was not much improvement in Baseline Toss (R5.9, L9.8%) and Vertical Jump (4.1%). Golf shot data: There was a very statistically significant difference in Club speed, Ball speed, and Total Length, which are related to speed, and there was no difference in Club path and Smash factor, which are related to accuracy and posture. Conclusion: CrossFit power training was effective in improving TPI OnBaseU Power Test and golf performance (Club speed, Ball speed, Total Length).

  • Objective: This study aimed to explore the brain connectivity between brain and biomechanical variables by exploring motion recognition through FFT (fast fourier transform) analysis and AI (artificial intelligence) focusing on quiet standing movement patterns. Method: Participants included 12 young adult males, comprising university students (n=6) and elite gymnasts (n=6). The first experiment involved FFT of biomechanical signals (fCoP, fAJtorque and fEEG), and the second experiment explored the optimization of AI-based GRU (gated recurrent unit) using fEEG data. Results: Significant differences (p<.05) were observed in frequency bands and maximum power based on group and posture types in the first experiment. The second study improved motion prediction accuracy through GRU performance metrics derived from brain signals. Conclusion: This study delved into the movement pattern of upright standing posture through the analysis of bio-signals linking the cerebral cortex to motor performance, culminating in the attainment of motion recognition prediction performance.

  • Objectives : : The purpose of this study is to analyze the evaluation results and score deviation between interraters after performing ankle sprain CPX. Methods : Ankle sprain CPX was performed on fourth-year students in the Department of Korean Medicine. A student standardized patient(SSP) filled out the 50-point PPI questionnaire. Results : Ankle sprain CPX final score was 28.20 ± 1.40. Evaluation items showed low scores in the following order: performance time, physical examination, and past and social history check. The "physical examination" accounted for the largest proportion of the score deviation between interraters. In PPI, the lowest score was "effective questioning", and the highest scores were "listening" and "empathy". Conclusions : We hope that follow-up research will be conducted to develop objective and reliable CPX evaluation standards and scoring checklists in the future.

  • This work presents microchannel heat sink shape optimization procedure using Kriging method. Design variables relating to microchannel width, depth and fin width are selected, and thermal resistance has been taken as objective function. Design points are selected through a three-level fractional factorial design of sampling method. Navier-Stokes and energy equations for laminar flow and conjugate heat transfer are solved at these design points using a finite volume solver. Solutions are carefully validated with experimental results. Using the numerically evaluated objective function, a surrogate model (Kriging) is constructed and optimum point is searched by sequential quadratic programming. The process of shape optimization greatly improves the thermal performance of microchannel heat sink under constant pumping power.
