  • An image processing algorithm has been developed in order to analyze the nanofiber web images obtained from a high magnification microscope. It has been known that precise pore detection on thick webs is extremely difficult mainly due to lack of light uniformity, difficulty of fine focusing and translucency of nanofiber web. The pore detection algorithm developed has been found to show excellent performance in characterizing the porous structure, thus being a promising tool for on-line quality control system under mass production. Since the images obtained from an optical microscope represent only web surface, a scale factor has been introduced to estimate the web structure as a whole. Resulting web structures have been compared to those by mercury porosimetry, especially in pore size distribution. It has been shown that those two structures have a strong correlation, indicating that scaling of a single layer web structure can be an effective way of estimating the structure of thick fiber webs.

  • Graphite reinforced conductive polymer composites for PEMFC bipolar plates were fabricated by the compression molding technique. Graphite powder was mixed with an phenol resin to impart electrical property in composites. In this study, conductive polymer composites with high filler $loadings(>60wt.\%)$ were manufactured to accomplish high electrical conductivity above 100S/cm. The level of compaction is important because graphite powder increase electrical conductivity of composites by direct physical contact between particles. The optimum molding pressure according to filler was proposed experimentally. Various tests(electrical conductivity, flexural strength, compressive strength, leach test, etc) were carried out to verify the performance of fabricated composites for PEMFC bipolar plates. Fabricated composites have good electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. The results of leach test and contact angle measurement showed similar characteristics compared with commercial bipolar plates.

  • The boundary films formed in sliding on steel surfaces were characterized using various lubricants. The mechanism of boundary film formation and loss was investigated over a range of temperature. The thickness of the boundary films was monitored in-situ by an ellipsometer, and the composition of the films was analyzed by XPS. The performance of the lubricants is closely associated with boundary film forming ability. In order to achieve high load carrying capacity, a boundary film must be formed on the surface. Sliding is necessary to form the films and some time is also required. As temperature increases, chemical reactivity increases the film formation rate, while the film removal rate increases due to thg decrease of durability of the boundary film material. There is a balance between these two competing mechanisms and this balance is reflected in the boundary film thickness.

  • In this paper, realization techniques of the parallel processing and the parallel network system for image processing are described. The parallel image processing system is constructed by the characterization of image processing and processor. Several problems are solved to achieve effective parallel processing and processor networking with the particular properties of image processing, which are reduction of communication quantity, equalization of load and delay depreciation on communication. A parallel image input device is developed for the flexible networking of parallel image processing. An abnormal region detection algorithm which is the basic function in machine vision is applied to evaluate the constructed parallel image processing system. The performance and effectiveness of the system are confirmed by experiments.

  • A low power (300 mW) catalytic bead combustible gas sensor is developed and utilized with a computer controlled sampling system for measuring heat content of natural gas. The heat content of gas is proportional to the change in the energy required to exposure to the sample of combustible gas. The heat content of natural gas samples ranging 36.30 - 39.88 MJ/$m^3$ is measured in the range of approximately $1\%$ error, which is comparable to its nominal heat content. Each gas has a slightly different curve of sensitivity vs. sensor temperature. Thus there Is no temperature at which all sensitivities are equal. In calibration process the choice of a optimum operating temperature is an important factor that influences the overall performance of the measurement system.

  • A comprehensive real-time spectral phase interferometry for direct electric field reconstruction (SPIDER) apparatus for characterizing femtosecond laser pulses is demonstrated. The SPIDER provides the temporal profiles of femtosecond laser pulses, reconstructed at the speed of 3.5 Hz, with parameters of the spectral phase such as group delay dispersion and third-order dispersion. The apparatus is applied successfully to optimize the spectral dispersion of a kHz femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser by adjusting a grating compressor in real time.

  • In this paper, p-n junction formation using screen-printed metalization and co-firing is used to fabricate high-efficiency solar cells on single- crystalline silicon substrates. In order to form high-quality contacts, co-firing of a screen-printed Ag grid on the front and Al on the back surface field is implemented. These contacts require low contact resistance, high conductivity, and good adhesion to achieve high efficiency. Before co-firing, a statistically designed experiment is conducted. After the experiment, a neural network (NN) trained by the error back-propagation algorithm is employed to model the crucial relationships between several input factors and solar cell efficiency. The trained NN model is also used to optimize the beltline furnace process through genetic algorithms.

  • This paper describes the development of a piezoelectric flextensional transducer, which aims to effectively degrade the TCE contained in aqueous solution. In order to adjust the 1st flextensional resonant frequency and output displacement of the flextensional transducer, the effect of the geometrical variations on performance was analyzed using the finite element analysis (FEM). The results indicated that the effect of external shell's thickness and curvature were most significant, and experimental fabrication and characterization of a transducer was performed to confirm the results. To prove the capacity to degrade the TCE contained in aqueous solution, 50 and 100 ppm of TCE were prepared in sealed chamber, and investigated the removal rate of TCE through the time and initial concentration.

  • Since Gratzel et al. reported the first efficient dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) in 1991, they have attracted much attention due to their relatively high power conversion efficiency and potentially low cost production. To date, high performance and good stability of DSSC based on Ru-dyes as a photosensitizer had been widely addressed in the literatures. However, the Ru-dyes are facing the problem of manufacturing costs and environmental issues. In order to obtain even cheaper photosensitizers for DSSC, the metal-free organic photosensitizers are strongly desired. The metal-free organic dyes offer superior molar extinction coefficients, low cost, and diverse molecular structures as compared to the conventional Ru-dyes, In this work, we have studied on the synthesis and characterization of the organo dendritic dyes containing different number of electron acceptor moieties in a molecule.

  • Antagonistic fluorescent pseudomonads isolated from rhizospheric soil of rice were characterized by 16S rRNA amplicon and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analyses. Antagonistic isolates were grown in the fermentation media, and production of antibiotics was confirmed by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Production of fungal cell-wall-degrading enzymes such as protease, cellulase, pectinase, and chitinase was determined. Dendrogram based on the major and differentiating fatty acids resulted into 5 clusters, viz., cluster I (P. pseudoalcaligenes group), cluster II (P. plecoglossicida group), cluster III (P. fluorescens group), cluster IV (P. aeruginosa group), and cluster V (P. putida group). Characteristic presence of high relative proportions of cyclopropane (17:0 CYCLO w7c) was observed in antagonistic bacteria. Data revealed biodiversity among antagonistic fluorescent pseudomonads associated with the rice rhizosphere. Results presented in this study will help to identify the antagonistic isolates and to determine their mechanisms that mediate antagonism against fungal pathogens of rice.
