We propose a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a slotted porous core and elliptical-hole cladding, for high birefringence in the terahertz regime. Asymmetry in the guided mode is obtained mainly by using arrays of elliptical air holes in the TOPAS® polymer cladding. We investigate the tradeoff between several structural parameters and find optimized values that can have a high birefringence while satisfying the single-mode condition. The optical properties in the terahertz regime are thoroughly analyzed in numerical simulations, using a full-vector finite-element method with the perfectly-matched-layer condition. In an optimal design, the proposed photonic crystal fiber shows a high birefringence of 8.80 × 10-2 and an effective material loss of 0.07 cm-1 at a frequency of 1 THz, satisfying the single-mode-guidance condition at the same time. The proposed PCF would be useful for various polarization-management applications in the terahertz range.

This paper describes an anisotropic perfectly matched layer (APML) for mesh truncation of the Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) method. The APML method can classified by a split type and an unsplit type, in case of the split type be made up 12 equations or 8 equations largely, and in case of the unsplit type be made of 6 equations. Therefore the latter is more simple as compare with the former. For the APML method presented in this paper is the latter, is directly derived from the time domain equations of Maxwell and extend to the three dimensional problem for the method suggested by Chen. Especially, in the edge and corner parts except the planes, the APML method effectively treated as compound with the Chen's method and Gedney's method newly. The results of the numerical method in this paper show the radiation patterns and the time responses of electromagnetic fields of the wire antennas according to wavelengths and the APML results are compared with Mur's first order absorbing boundary condition and Kraus's analytical results. Eventually, Mur's first order condition have many errors at the edge and corner. On the other hand, in comparison with Kraus's analytical results, it is quite good agreement, and the validity of present method is confirmed.

In this paper, a coupling scheme for applying finite element analysis(FEA) programs, such as, LS-DYNA and MIDAS/Civil, to a nonlinear soil structure interaction analysis by the boundary reaction method(BRM) is presented. With the FEA programs, the structure and soil media are discretized by linear or nonlinear finite elements. To absorb the outgoing elastic waves to unbounded soil region as much as possible, the PML elements and viscous-spring elements are used at the outer FE boundary, in the LS-DYNA model and in MIDAS/Civil model, respectively. It is also assumed that all the nonlinear elements in the problem are limited to structural region. In this study, the boundary reaction forces for the use in the BRM are calculated using the KIESSI-3D program by solving soil-foundation interaction problem subjected to incident seismic waves. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated with a linear SSI seismic analysis problem by comparing the BRM solution with the conventional SSI solution. Numerical comparison indicates that the BRM can effectively be applied to a nonlinear soil-structure analysis if motions at the foundation obtained by the BRM for a linear SSI problem excluding the nonlinear structure is conservative.

This paper is concerned with the numerical analysis of dynamic response of floating offshore wind turbine subject to underwater explosion using an effective non-reflecting technique. An infinite sea water domain was truncated into a finite domain, and the non-reflecting technique called the perfectly matched layer(PML) was applied to the boundary of truncated finite domain to absorb the inherent reflection of out-going impact wave at the boundary. The generalized transport equations that govern the inviscid compressible water flow was split into three PML equations by introducing the direction-wise absorption coefficients and state variables. The fluid-structure interaction problem that is composed of the wind turbine and the sea water flow was solved by the iterative coupled Eulerian FVM and Largangian FEM. And, the explosion-induced hydrodynamic pressure was calculated by JWL(Jones-Wilkins-Lee) equation of state. Through the numerical experiment, the hydrodynamic pressure and the structural dynamic response were investigated. It has been confirmed that the case using PML technique provides more reliable numerical results than the case without using PML technique.

It is difficult to see a therapeutic effect from cardiovascular disease treatment methods in the case of a hardened chronic total occlusion (CTO), owing to the calcification of the deposition materials. However, lesion cells, such as CTOs, can be selectively necrotized without affecting the normal tissue using high-intensity ultrasound focused on one point. In this study, a phantom CTO was necrotized by a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy system, and the acoustic characteristics in the focal region were analyzed. An experimental HIFU device was constructed to discover the appropriate conditions for the necrosis of a phantom CTO. The transfer characteristics of the ultrasound changed in the focal region by the density difference of the phantom CTO. These changes were acoustically analyzed to choose the available frequency band for each density. On-off temperature control in the focal region was applied to prevent rapid temperature rises, which would otherwise affect normal tissue.

This paper reports the frequency characteristics and the time response of parallel adjacent-transmission lines, crossed adjacent-transmission lines and parallel adjacent-transmission lines which are on the different planes by using FDTD-PML method. In the parallel adjacent-transmission lines, the crosstalks as a function of horizontal distance are calculated and in the crossed adjacent- transmission lines, the crosstalks as a function of vertical distance are simulated. Also, the crosstalks as functions of horizontal and vertical distances are measured and analyzed in the parallel adjacent-transmission lines which are on the different planes.
We study the focusing properties of a two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal (PC) comprising silica and germanium partitioned cylinders in air background. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with periodic boundary condition is utilized to calculate the dispersion band diagram and the FDTD method incorporating the perfectly matched layer boundary condition is employed to simulate the image formation. In contrast to the common square PCs in which the negative refraction effect occurs in the first photonic band without negative phase propagation, in our suggested model system, the frequency with negative refraction exists in the second band and in near-infrared region. In this case, the wave propagates with a negative phase velocity and the evanescent waves can be supported. We also discuss the dependency of the image resolution and its location on surface termination, source location, and slab thickness. According to the simulation results, spatial resolution of the proposed PC lens is below the radiation wavelength.

In this paper, we have applied Berenger's perfectly matched layer(PML) absorbing boundary conditition(ABC) with three dimension at the propagation direction of field, side boundary and upper boundary in which evanescent and radiation field is exist. Even though the same computationaal domain is used, PML is superior to other ABC in the absorbing ability that is obtained reflective coefficient about $10^{-4}$ unit for the propagation wave, but PML is ineffective in absorbing evanescent field. Also we have compared dispersive characteristics of the microstrip with Kobayashi's emprical method, and obtaind very similar result, but 0.8% error is generated at the dc or near.

In this study we propose a new photonic crystal fiber (PCF) design that simultaneously offers broadband single-mode operation, high birefringence, and large normal dispersion in the optical-communication wavelength regime. The waveguide is based on a hybrid square-lattice PCF (HS-PCF) that has circular air holes of two different diameters alternating in the cladding, plus a pure silica defect at the center. The optical properties of the guided modes are analyzed numerically by the finite-element method (FEM) with a perfectly matched layer as the boundary condition. The optimized HS-PCF has a dispersion coefficient of $-601.67\;ps\;nm^{-1}\;km^{-1}$ and a high birefringence of $1.025{\times}10^{-2}$ at $1.55{\mu}m$. In addition, over the S+C+L+U wavelength bands the proposed HS-PCF with ultraflat birefringence with a slope on the order of $10^{-5}$.
We propose a highly birefringent and dispersion compensating photonic crystal fiber based on a double line defect core. Using a finite element method (FEM) with a perfectly matched layer (PML), it is demonstrated that it is possible to obtain broadband large negative dispersion of about -400 to -427 ps/(nm.km) covering all optical communication bands (from O to U band) and to achieve the dispersion coefficient of -425 ps/(nm.km) at 1.55μm. In addition, the highest birefringence of the proposed PCF at 1.55 μm is 1.92 × 10-2 and the value of birefringence from the wavelength of 1.26 to 1.8 μm (covering O to U bands) is about 1.8 × 10-2 to 1.92 × 10-2. It is confirmed that from the simulation results, the confinement loss of the proposed PCF is always less than 10-3 dB/km at 1.55 μm with seven fiber rings of air holes in the cladding.
