  • Currently, the operation rule of agricultural reservoirs in case of drought events follows the drought forecast warning standard of agricultural water supply. However, it is difficult to preemptively manage drought in individual reservoirs because drought forecasting standards are set according to average reservoir storage ratio such as 70%, 60%, 50%, and 40%. The equal standards based on average water level across the country could not reflect the actual drought situation in the region. In this study, we proposed the improvement of drought operation rule for agricultural reservoirs based on the percentile approach using past water level of each reservoir. The percentile approach is applied to monitor drought conditions and determine drought criteria in the U.S. Drought Monitoring (USDM). We applied the drought operation rule to reservoir storage rate in extreme 2017 spring drought year, the one of the most climatologically driest spring seasons over the 1961-2021 period of record. We counted frequency of each drought criteria which are existing and developed operation rules to compare drought operation rule determining the actual drought conditions during 2016-2017. As a result of comparing the current standard and the percentile standard with SPI6, the percentile standard showed severe-level when SPI6 showed severe drought condition, but the current standard fell short of the results. Results can be used to improve the drought operation criteria of drought events that better reflects the actual drought conditions in agricultural reservoirs.

  • We use a novel, forced censoring technique that closer fits the lower tails of strenth distributions to better estimate extremly smaller percentiles for measuring progress in continuous improvement initiatives. These percentiles are of greater interest for companies, government oversight organizations, and consumers concerned with safely and preventing accidents for many products in general, but specifically for medium density fiberboard (MDF). The international industrial standard for MDF for measuring highest quality is internal bond (IB, also called tensile strengh) and its smaller percentiles are crucial, especially the first percentile and lower ones. We induce censoring at a value just above the median to weight lower observations more. Using this approach, we have better fits in the lower tails of the distribution, where these samller percentiles are impacted most. Finally, bootstrap estimates of the small percentiles are used to demonstrate improved intervals by our forced censoring approach and the fitted model. There was evidence from the study to suggest that MDF has potentially different failure modes for early failures. Overall, our approach is parsimonious and is suitable for real time manufacturing settings. The approach works for either strengths distributions or lifetime distributions.

  • There were many theoretical studies using mathematical models about a yard storage capacity in a container terminal so far, but a simulation approach is newly popularizing. The reason why the simulation studies about yard storage capacity were a few was that once the most important part in a container terminal was a quay part. However, from the economic crisis year of 1977, the yard storage part in a container terminal became a critical resource because of the shortage of SOC investment resources. Therefore, after discharging or loading even through there was a waiting in the quay part or not, it can be swiftly improved the efficiency of a container terminal if it was handled rapidly or smoothly in a container yard. So the accurate assessment of yard storage capacity in a container terminal was needed. This study planed to assess the operation capability of a container yard via a simulation model. The model included many chatacteristics of three Korean container terminals such as Gamman Hanjin, Uam, and Hutchinson Busan at the period of 1999 to 2000. The 95% percentile was chosen as a criterion for judging of the storage capability by the recommendation of KPC (1998) and JWD (1998). A simulation approach with system dynamics concept considering the multi-directional impacts within the related variables can probavly foresee the future storage capacity of a terminal not just the past.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the exposure assessment of Korean consumers to five neonicotinoid pesticides in fruit vegetables cultivated in Korea, using a probabilistic approach. We used five neonicotionid pesticides residues(acetamiprid, clothianidin, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, thiamethoxam) data in fruit vegetables reported by Rural Development Administration for the 2009 monitoring programme. Total exposure of five neonicotinoid pesticides for Korean consumer ranged from 0.087 to 0.236 ${\mu}g$/kg/day at the $95^{th}$ percentile. The $95^{th}$ percentile values of total exposure of five neonicotinoid pesticides by probabilistic approach were lower than those by deterministic approach, although mean values of total exposure by probabilistic approach were similar with those of total exposure by deterministic approach. Total exposure to acetamiprid residue may be mainly due to the exposure to acetamiprid through the consumption of strawberry. Also, acetamiprid residues in strawberry were considered as much more contributory factor to total exposure of acetamiprid than consumption data of strawberry. This contributory properties of acetamiprid were similar with those of all other neonicotinoid pesticides, excluding thiacloprid.

  • The purpose of this study is to systematically determine an optimal percentile cut-off in histogram analysis for calculating the mean parameters obtained from a non-Gaussian continuous-time random-walk (CTRW) diffusion model for differentiating individual glioma grades. This retrospective study included 90 patients with histopathologically proven gliomas (42 grade II, 19 grade III, and 29 grade IV). We performed diffusion-weighted imaging using 17 b-values (0-4000 s/mm2) at 3T, and analyzed the images with the CTRW model to produce an anomalous diffusion coefficient (Dm) along with temporal (𝛼) and spatial (𝛽) diffusion heterogeneity parameters. Given the tumor ROIs, we created a histogram of each parameter; computed the P-values (using a Student's t-test) for the statistical differences in the mean Dm, 𝛼, or 𝛽 for differentiating grade II vs. grade III gliomas and grade III vs. grade IV gliomas at different percentiles (1% to 100%); and selected the highest percentile with P < 0.05 as the optimal percentile. We used the mean parameter values calculated from the optimal percentile cut-offs to do a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis based on individual parameters or their combinations. We compared the results with those obtained by averaging data over the entire region of interest (i.e., 100th percentile). We found the optimal percentiles for Dm, 𝛼, and 𝛽 to be 68%, 75%, and 100% for differentiating grade II vs. III and 58%, 19%, and 100% for differentiating grade III vs. IV gliomas, respectively. The optimal percentile cut-offs outperformed the entire-ROI-based analysis in sensitivity (0.761 vs. 0.690), specificity (0.578 vs. 0.526), accuracy (0.704 vs. 0.639), and AUC (0.671 vs. 0.599) for grade II vs. III differentiations and in sensitivity (0.789 vs. 0.578) and AUC (0.637 vs. 0.620) for grade III vs. IV differentiations, respectively. Percentile-based histogram analysis, coupled with the multi-parametric approach enabled by the CTRW diffusion model using high b-values, can improve glioma grading.

  • Few studies have been carried out to find out the interaction of design speeds, operating speeds, and posted speeds though they have a complementary relationships. As an attempt to find the relationships, this study measured the speeds of the free flowing vehicles at four lane rural highways. In comparison of 95th percentile speeds and inferred design speeds determined from the road design manual with the geometric features of each sites, operating speeds were constantly higher than the inferred design speeds at the sites where the inferred design speed is under 110km/h. and the reverse situation was observed at the sites where the inferred design speed is over 130km/h. In the comparison of operating speeds and posted speeds. the range of the 85th percentile speeds at the sites where posted speeds is 80km/h was distributed from 95km/h to 110km/h. and the range was distributed from the 105km/h to the 120km/h at the sites where posted speeds is 90km/h. Multiple regression analysis was used to develop prediction equations for mean. 85th. and 95th percentile speeds at approach and curve midpoint locations. At the midpoint, only posted speeds influenced the mean, 85th. At the approach locations, the mean, 85th, 95th percentile speeds were influenced by posted speeds and length of the approach tangent.

  • In a modern semiconductor device manufacturing industry, statistical bin limits on wafer level test bin data are used for minimizing value added to defective product as well as protecting end customers from potential quality and reliability excursion. Most wafer level test bin data show skewed distributions. By Monte Carlo simulation, this paper evaluates methods and sample size effect regarding determination of statistical bin limits. In the simulation, it is assumed that wafer level test bin data follow the Poisson distribution. Hence, typical shapes of the data distribution can be specified in terms of the distribution's parameter. This study examines three different methods; 1) percentile based methodology; 2) data transformation; and 3) Poisson model fitting. The mean square error is adopted as a performance measure for each simulation scenario. Then, a case study is presented. Results show that the percentile and transformation based methods give more stable statistical bin limits associated with the real dataset. However, with highly skewed distributions, the transformation based method should be used with caution in determining statistical bin limits. When the data are well fitted to a certain probability distribution, the model fitting approach can be used in the determination. As for the sample size effect, the mean square error seems to reduce exponentially according to the sample size.

  • This study used meta-analysis to synthesize the effectiveness of the project approach. After reviewing 51 studies, we analyzed the effect size of 119 articles published between 1990 and 2002 using SAS 8.2 program. The grand average of the project approach effectiveness was 1.03. This implies that the experimental group that employing the project approach is more effective than control group by the 35 percentile. We also found that the project approach is more effective for preschool children group (1.21, 89%) than for the elementary school children group (0.88, 81%). Specific variables regarding the effectiveness of the project approach were analyzed and its consequences were discussed.

  • Operating speed is one of key elements in the design and operation of freeway. Few studies have been carried out macroscopically to find characteristics of free-flow speed (FFS) using small sample size and not considering the conditions of traffic volume and the effects of hour periods. As an attempt to find out the characteristics of FFS, this study microscopically analysed both the distributions of freeway FFS and percentile speeds according to traffic volume and daily hour periods using huge sample size. It was found out that speed distributions are changed and showed different behaviors under the conditions of traffic volumes(1-5 veh/30sec) and daily hour periods(0-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-19, 20-23). V85(85th percentile speed) at morning, night, and midnight period decreases according to increase in traffic volume respectively, whereas V85 at day time does not show considerable differences. So the behaviors of V85 according to hour periods dramatically changed according to the increase in traffic volume.
