  • This study has been conducted to investigate the treatment time and concentration of GA3 solution dipping for labor saving in 'Campbell Early' grapevine. The rachis growth at harvest was reduced by GA3 solution dipping before 5 days flowering, and increased significantly by GA3 solution dipping treatment at full bloom and after 5 days full bloom. GA3 5, 10, 20 mg·L-1 dipping treatment before 5 days flowering and GA3 20 mg·L-1 treatment of full bloom and after 5 days full bloom showed a rachis twist phytotoxicity symptom. The optimum GA3 concentrations for rachis growth promotion without phytotoxicity were 5 mg·L-1 and 10 mg·L-1. The degree of compact berry, bloom, skin color, SSC and acidity at harvest by GA3 solution dipping treatment time between concentration were not different from those of control. But the fruit berry weight was decreased by before 5 days flowering treatment when compared with control. There were no differences in full bloom and after 5 days full bloom treatment. The occurrence percent of berry cracking at before 5 days flowering and after 5 days full bloom treatment were significantly increased by GA3 treatment. The bitter rot occurrence of berry at harvest was not affected by GA3 treatment. Total rachis length of fruit cluster was increased by full bloom and 5 days after full bloom treatment. The length of rachis increased without reference to them position at full bloom and 5 days after bloom treatment. Accordingly, GA3 5 mg·L-1 solution dipping treatment at full bloom and 5 days after full bloom were can be effectively for rachis growth promotion.

  • This study was conducted to obtain basic information on cross breeding for developing bolting resistant variety of Angelica gigas NAKAI which has been subjected to severe yield reduction resulted from flower-stalk initiation during the growth. Compatibility of selfing and/or crossing pollination among 5 local cultivars were tested. Results obtained are summarized as follows. In case of three year old plant, all cultivars emerged March 14 and bolted from May 12 to May 13. Ponghwa cultivar was flowered 3 to 5 days earlier than other cultivars. Flower duration continued 41 to 43 days. Interval of flowering date from main stem to first primary branch, from first to second or second to third primary branch was 9 to 13 days. Emergency of stamen proceeded 4~8 days of pistil initiation demonstrating that Angelica gigas NAKAI is protandrous plant. Furthermore initiation of first pistil was 1~4days later than formation of last stamen in the same flower cluster. Percent pollination of Angelica gigas NAKAI was 52% under natural condition, so called open-pollination, but bagging by enveloping flowers was as low as 0.4~2.4%. In the result of compatibility test, all local cultivars tend to show both of self-and cross-compatibility. Inpollination, ‘Muju’$\times$‘Muju’combination showed highest fertility up to 40.8% whereases cross pollination, ‘Pyeongchang’$\times$‘Inje’combination, showed 67.0% fertility.

  • The vegetable perilla is proved to be a late-maturing plant that flowers at the early of Oct. regardless of sowing time, so that the sowing time for seed production should be decided under consideration of maturity before beginning of frost. This experiment was carried out to determine the sowing date for seed production at greenhouse on late-maturing perilla cultivar, 'Ipdlkkae 1' in the middle region of Korea. The sowing dates were 8 times from May 6 to July 15 with an intervals of 10 days. As sowing date was delayed, the stem height, no. of nodes, no. of branches, no. of cluster per plant and no. of capsules per cluster were decreased. But as sowing was early, the lodging was occurred because of heavier growing. Days to flowering was linearly decreased about 0.86 day as affected by a day's delayed. But days from flowering to maturing was not significantly affected by sowing date. The grain yield was not significantly different among sowing from May 6 to June 15 and rapidly decreased the sowing after June 25 because of the reductions of no. of cluster and percent of ripened grain. Considering accumulative temperature, lodging, germination rate and grain yield, it is suggested that the sowing for seed production in late-maturing perilla cultivar should be finish before June 15 (transplanted at July 15) at greenhouse in the middle region of Korea.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate agronomic characteristics, forage quality, and dry matter (DM) yield of hairy vetch 'Cold green', common vetch 'Maxivesa', 'Wild common', 'Rasina', 'Morava', and 'Blanchefleur', at Seongju in Kyeongbuk from 2010 to 2012. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. Vetchs were seeded on the 10th of Oct. 2010 and on the 3rd of Oct. 2011. Vetch plants were harvested on the 4th of May 2011 and on the 10th of May in 2012. 'Cold green' and 'Wild common' exhibited greater cold tolerance than other cultivars. Fifty percent-flowering of 'Cold green' occurred on the 22nd of Apr., whereas that of 'Wild common' occurred on the 26th of Apr. and those of 'Rasina' and 'Blanchefleur' occurred on 28th of Apr. and that of 'Maxivesa' occurred on 17th of May. The DM yield of 'Cold green' was higher (p<0.05) than all other cultivars, whereas the DM yield of 'Wild common' was higher (p<0.05) than those of the remaining 4 cultivars. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested 'Wild common' vetch is be recommendable for cultivation where increased DM production is sought.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine germination ability, life cycle, regrowth ability of Portulaca oleracea L. The newly harvested seeds from P. oleracea flowered before July 15 were able to germinate, but percent germination decreased markedly as the flowering time was later than July 15, showing no germination of seed collected at Sept. 12 which were flowered at August 30, 76.5% of seeds can be germinated in the light as seed stored in room condition for 90 days, but in dark condition, it needed 2 years of seed storage for germination. Low temperature treatment at $2^{\circ}C$ for 5 days enhanced seed germination of P. oleracea in both light and dark conditions. The maximum vagetative growth was observed at 30 to 75 days after seeding. The late seeding time such as July 1 shortened the period of vegetative growth. However, regardless of the seeding times, the first flowering was observed at about 40 days after seeding. Leaf numbers, shoot lengths, fresh and dry weights were greatly affected by the seeding dates, showing that the earlier seedings produced significantly higher shoot length, fresh and dry weight, leaf numbers and branch numbers than those of the late seedings. When all branches were removed on 68 days after seeding, their regrowth ability was 50.3% and cuttaged branches showed 78.1% regrowth as compared to intact plant.

  • This study was conducted to examine the characteristics of flowering and fruiting in Nelumbo pentapetala 'Yellow Bird'. Lotus rhizomes were planted in pot (70 cm in length and 71 cm in width) on April 18, 2008, and grown under rain shelter condition at a private farm in Muan-gun, Jeonnam. Ninety percent of the lotus plants were bloomed as two flowers per a plant, and the others were one flower. The first flowers were bloomed in the middle or late July, and the second flowers in the early August. Flower stalks were formed between eighth and tenth internodes in the main rhizome. Nelumbo pentapetala 'Yellow Bird' had light yellow flowers, 12 cm in length and 13 cm in width. Lotus plants of 21.4% were not bloomed, resulting from the insufficient securing of internodes in the main rhizome and the blind. We, therefore, concluded that Nelumbo pentapetala 'Yellow Bird' as a ornamental plant should be grown up to 8 in the node number of main rhizome until mid-July.

  • The nicotine converter genotypes of burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), which convert nicotine to nornicotine, contain a high amount of nornicotine that degrades tobacco quality and smoking taste. Elimination of nicotine converter plants before seed harvesting is required for breeding nicotine low-converter lines and for increasing their seed production. This study aims to develop a rapid and convenient method of identifying nicotine converter plants of burley breeding lines of KB9118(KB108) using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and isatin coloration method. Out of 223 plants in 10 lines harvested at maturity in 2002, 102 plants ($45\%$) were identified as nicotine converters by TLC of tobacco leaves air-cured. For 16 lines selected as low-converters in 2002, 148 plants grown in the field in 2003 were tested by the isatin coloration method using two detached leaves at the flowering stage thoroughly sprayed with $1\%\;NaHCO_3$ solution and cured in conditioned chambers for the early identification of nicotine to nornicotine conversion. From these samples, 46 plants ($31\%$) in 4 lines were identified as nicotine converters, indicating that the ratio of converters significantly decreased by one time selection. Mean percent conversion of non-screened lines was $14\%$ higher than that of following generation. Therefore in the burley tobacco, a rapid and convenient means of identifying and removing nornicotine converter plants by the isatin coloration method during growth in the greenhouse or field were effective in reducing the converter plants in the following generation.

  • The Condonopsis lanceolata Trautv. was planted in field to investigate the effect of afterwards shading in the condition of sun light of fifty six percent on the characteristics of photosynthesis according to leaf position at flowering stage. The vine length and leaf area were increased with shading treatment in comparison with that of non-shading. Dry weight of leaf and vine indicate opposite tendency with the result above. SLA (specific leaf area) was much more increased in shaded leaves than that obtained from non-shading treatment. The shaded leaves of plant show a higher SPAD value than that of non-shaded leaves. The net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance were increased as the PAR was increased. And it is the maximum valve (PAR of 700-1000 ${\mu}$mol/m$^2$/s of PAR) of all leaves. Overnurse and light saturation point of the Condonopsis lanceolata Trautv. shading-treated was improved in comparison with control as net photosynthetic rates of leaves positioned on each part of the stem was increased.
