  • Design characteristics of the space depends on the type of design. This study organized gender perceptual characteristics from terminology that is used in the process of obtaining information about corresponding space intended to represent design types and the images which were selected by design experts. The results from the study are concluded as in the followings: First: in the Modern type, the males show "the somewhat high difference of the images" from formality and decoration. Also, the study shows that males perceive very high in "the very high difference of the images" from spatiality, formality, and decoration. Second: in case of modern and minimal types, females perceive the spatiality and the males perceive formality and decoration. This study shows that modern type contains a lot of adjective, which means the man overwhelmingly perceives than the woman perceives in the decoration of modern type. Third: while males in modern and minimal types perceive formality and decoration greatly, they perceive spatiality greatly in natural types. In contrast, females in modern and minimal types perceive spatiality greatly, but perceive decoration slightly larger in natural types. These results tell us that the gender can appear differently depending on which types. This study analyzed gender perception characteristics to the design types, which were selected by a group of design experts. The difference between the types of design occurs in the differences of space sense and image by gender. Through analyzing the differences of spatial types, it is clear that different genders perceive different characteristics.

  • In this paper, we implement a sensor which can perceive obstacles. We constructed it with a laser emitting a structured light and a small pc camera. It is cheap and can measure the precise sizes of the obstacles. Ultrasonic arrays and laser scanners are used generally to perceive obstacles in the autonomous mobile robot until now. However we knew that they can perceive big obstacles well, but cannot perceive small obstacles on the ground by experiments. We mounted this equipment to our robot and use it to perceive the obstacles of the front side. Our robot can recognize the obstacles of 10mm height. We expect that this equipment will be useful because it is cheap but work well.

  • In English, a focused word with new information receives a pitch accent. This paper examines how English native speakers and Korean speakers produce and perceive focus in English yes-no questions. The production experiments show that native speakers realize an appropriate intonation of yes-no questions, in which a focused word has a low pitch accent followed by a high phrasal accent and a high boundary tone. However, Korean speakers usually give a high tone to a focused word. In a like manner, the perception experiments show that English native speakers judge a word with a low tone to be focused, while Korean speakers have difficulty in comprehending a focused word realized as a low tone. And it is found that Korean speakers tend to perceive low tones on sentence initial and final focused words better than those on sentence medial focused words, and they often perceive a word with a relatively high fundamental frequency or a sharp rise of fundamental frequency as a focused word. This paper shows that Korean speakers have trouble to produce and perceive an appropriate tonal pattern of a focused yes-no question, and that can cause confusion in a conversation with native speakers.

  • This study is aimed to grasp the actual problems of the perception of English rhythm and intonation structure by Korean University students who have studied English in the secondary schools for the past six years, and to establish the systems of English rhythm and intonation structure for the Korean students of English. For this study, the listening test is provided, and 100 students are chosen as the subjects of the study. The noticeable findings are summarized as follows: (1) Koreans perceive the words stress comparatively well in nonsense words, unfamiliar place names, and familiar word. (2) Koreans do not perceive the isochrony of English rhythm well enough. The perception of the sentence stress is very unstable, especially in the sentence involved in polysyllabic words, compound words, and 'emphatic stress' pr 'contrastive stress'(or in the different rhythmic patterns). (3) Koreans do not perceive the nucleus well enough. The perception of the nucleus is more stable in content words than in function words, at the end of a sentence than in the middle of a sentence, and in monosyllabic words than in the polysyllabic words. (4) Koreans do not perceive the boundary(or pause) of intonation group well enough. The perception of the pause is unstable in the long or complex sentence. (5) Koreans discriminate the meaning of English word stress comparatively well, especially in disyllabic words. But the discrimination is somewhat unstable in polysyllabic words and between 'adjective' and 'verb' (6) Koreans' discrimination of the intonation meaning is below the level. Koreans do not perceive the differences of intonation meaning according to the pitch accent or the focus. In conclusion, the writer will propose the procedures for the teaching of rhythm and intonation in the following order: word stress drill longrightarrowstressed and reduced syllables drilllongrightarrowrhythm group drilllongrightarrowthe varying rhythm drilllongrightarrowsentence stress drilllongrightarrownucleus drill longrightarrowintonation group drilllongrightarrowlong utterance drill of more than two intonation group.
