Mechanics of missile penetration into geo-materials

  • The present study aims to improve an existing model for the prediction of deceleration time history, penetration depth and forces on ogive and conical nose shaped missiles under normal impact into geo-material targets. The actual ogive nose shaped missile has been considered in the analysis and the results thus obtained have been compared with the existing model and significant improvements are found. A close proximity in the results has also been observed with the experimental values. The results of ogive nose shaped missile have also been compared with equivalent conical nose shaped missile. Variation of radial stresses along nose length and radial direction has been studied. Effect of CRH on missile penetrating performance has been investigated.

  • Suk-San highway bridge, located on a soft ground environment, had been examined the current condition of settlement estimation throughout G.P.R(Ground Penetrating Radar), general observation and visual observation(video camera & scope). According to the above observations, the ground of this area has sunk about thirty centimeters since 1996. Also, currently, Suk-San highway bridge has been disjoining the gap between the structure and ground. Therefore, it is necessary to fill it up the gap. The purpose of this paper is to report the effects of Sunk-San highway bridge was observed by G.P.R. & general observation etc. and to present the results of repair of Suk-San highway bridge filling the gap up.

Prediction of ling concrete thickness for cable tunnel by GPR and impact-echo method (지중레이다와 충격반향기법에 의한 지하 통신구 터널의 라이닝 두께 추정)

  • 지하 30m 암반에 건설된 통신구 터널의 안전성을 검토하기 위하여 콘크리트 라이닝 두께를 지중레이다(Ground Penetrating Radar)와 충격반향기법(Impact-Echo Method)으로 추정하였다. 지중레이다에 의한 콘크리트 라이닝 단면의 연속적인 화상으로부터 라이닝 두께의 상대적인 변화를 파악하였으며, 라이닝 두께가 얇은 구간은 충격반향 기법에 의해 일정 간격으로 두께를 추정하였다. 터널 천장의 라이닝 두께는 31.85cm, 좌측 및 우측 측벽부의 라이닝 두께는 각각 32.45cm. 32.97cm로서 설계 값인 30cm와 비교적 잘 일치하는 것으로 파악되었다. 지중레이다와 충격반향기법을 조합한 본 방법은 터널 라이닝 콘크리트 두께를 추정하는데 있어서 매우 효율적이고 신뢰성 있는 방법으로 분석되었다.

Pore Pressure Response around a Cone Shape Penetrating Object (콘형 관입체 주변에서 발생하는 간극수압반응)

  • 관입체 주변에서 발생하는 지반의 과잉간극수압은 그 측정위치에 따라 영향을 받는 것으로 알려져 있다. 특히 관입체의 선단과 축표면에서의 간극수압반응은 상당히 다른 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 지반에 대한 관입시험시 주변지반에서 발생하는 간극수압의 반응에 대하여 Louisiana State University의 시험토조를 사용하여 조사하였다. 또한 시험결과를 비등방성 수정 Cam Clay 모델을 이용한 유한요소해석과 비교하였다. 본 연구로부터 관입체 주위에서 발생하는 간극수압은 예측한 바와 같이 선단부위에서 크게 나타나고, 뒤로 갈수록 작아지는 현상을 나타내었다. 이와 같은 현상은 전단에 의하여 발생한 간극수압과 압축에 의하여 발생한 간극수압의 상호간섭에 의한 것으로 나타났다.

A Practical Network Design for VoD Services

  • Recently IPTV service is penetrating to the ordinary home users very swiftly. One of the first phase of IPTV service is considered to be VoD, and a nationwide availability of the VoD service imposes tremendous pressure to the network resource due to its requirements for the broad bandwidth, the inherent nature of unicast technology, and the large scalability, etc. This work suggests a novel and practical method to the design of network resource for the VoD service. Especially, we explore the distributed content storage problem that takes into account the popularity of the video contents and its corresponding link dimensioning problem that takes into account the grade of service for the flow level quality of service about the VoD service. By assuming a realistic topology for the nationwide IP backbone network of Korea, which is a typical tree topology, we suggest an analytic method for the design of VoD service.

Percutaneous self-injury to the femoral region caused by bur breakage during surgical extraction of a patient's impacted third molar

  • Extraction of an impacted third molar is one of the most frequently performed techniques in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Surgeons can suffer numerous external injuries while extracting a tooth, with percutaneous injuries to the hand being the most commonly reported. In this article, we present a case involving a percutaneous injury of the surgeon's femoral region caused by breakage of the fissure bur connected to the handpiece during extraction of the third molar. We also propose precautions to prevent such injuries and steps to be undertaken when they occur.

  • 본 논문에서는 관통형 고주파 노이즈 필터(noise filter)를 설계하고, 제작하였다. 분포정수형(distributed constant type) 노이즈 필터는 세라믹 다층 구조(multi-layer)를 가지며, 기존의 노이즈 억압 방법인 칩 페라이트 비드, 3단자 커패시터 그리고 집중 정수형(lumped constant type) 노이즈 필터에 비해 신호의 왜곡이 적고, 고주파 노이즈 억압특성이 우수하다. 본 논문에서는 기존의 분포정수형 노이즈 필터에 관통형 via-hole을 삽입하는 새로운 구조를 제안하였다. 제작된 노이즈 필터는 100MHz의 차단 주파수, 700MHz~1700MHz에서 20㏈이상의 감쇠 특성을 나타내었다. 또한, 기존의 노이즈 필터의 단점인 방향성 덴 공정에 대한 민감도를 개선시킴으로써 양산성이 향상되었다.

  • Cracks at mechanical fastener holes usually nucleate as elliptical comer cracks at the faying surface of the mechanical joints and grow as elliptical arc through cracks after penetrating the opposite surface. In this study mode I, II and III stress intensity factors at two surface points of elliptical arc through cracks at mechanical fastener holes are analyzed by applying weight function method. The weight function method for two dimensional mixed-mode problem is extended to three dimensional one and it is verified.

  • The LBB behavior and the crack opening displacement after a crack penetrated wall thickness of statically indeterminate piping system were investigated in this study, compared with statically determinate piping system. The reduction of ultimate strength caused by a crack was relatively small in the statically indeterminate piping system. The statically indeterminate piping system has more safety margin for LBB behavior than the statically determinate piping system. The crack opening displacement could be evaluated by using the plastic rotation angle proposed to evaluate the crack opening displacement after crack penetration in pipe with a non-penetrating crack.

Dystopia in the Science Fiction Film: Blade Runner and Adorno's Critique of Modern Society

  • Science fiction films touch coming-future themes, particularly those referring specifically to futuristic technology and its influence over human life. Dealing with the resistance of the replicants in the approaching millennium, Blade Runner brings the feat of modern civilization into doubt through the image of the dystopian future. In Blade Runner, a city is filled with waste, pollution, and dirt and a corrosive rain falls from the polluted clouds. Adorno criticizes contemporary society and its civilization. Characterizing advanced capitalist society by its total administration penetrating into every sphere of life, he contends that modern society promotes alienation, atomization, conformism, and fatalism. Blade Runner provides a chance to contemplate the problems of modern society, proposed by Adorno's critical works. Therefore, this paper attempts to analyze futuristic characteristics described in the film with Adorno's critique of modern society.
